Wild Turkey Rye 81 US Proof 700m L Wild Turkey Rye 81 US Proof has less alcohol on the nose, and its spice is softer and sweeter. The entry of the 81 is soft and sweet leading with vanilla accompanied by a light floral note. Whereas the light rye spice on the Russell’s Reserve comes in right at the beginning, Wild Turkey Rye develops more in the mid-palate. Wild Turkey Rye 81 picks up some heat toward the end of the mid-palate, but it never really gets all that spicy. The finish is fairly long and dry, with the floral rye spice note lightly left on the palate. There’s some nice cooling on the finish that shows off very good distillation. The Wild Turkey Rye 101 is a completely different taste experience. The entry is still slightly soft with vanilla, but the floral rye presents stronger and spicier. The mid-palate is also far less delicate as it explodes with flavours of vanilla, rye, oak spice and tobacco (a note that just doesn’t come through on the 81). There’s more spice at the end of the mid-palate but oddly less heat. The finish has some nice solid spice that lingers for a very long time.

I was curious to try this -- as it has the exact same mashbill as Rittenhouse BiB. Rittenhouse had been my go-to budget rye for cocktails that was still enjoyable to sip neat or on ice. But after doing a side by side (neat and in an old-fashioned), Wild Turkey Rye 101 was more enjoyable and at a lower price. Highly recommend.

WT Rye 101 is “barely legal” rye that delivers a ton of flavor. Yes, you get the familiar WT bourbon notes but you also the traditional rye flavors that differentiate this Rye from it’s bourbon brother. The nose has a sweet, spicy scent which is really nice. The palette follows the same sweet, spicy flavors but adds some mint, subtle smoke, with a little oak. The finish is medium in duration with spice and a little heat. This is a 50.5% ABV and that ABV is present without wreaking your throat with too heavy handed a burn. The price is well worth it by a mile. You won’t be bragging to your friends about this “deeply complex, top shelf rye” but who cares! I drink it because it’s delicious. I don’t care where it sits on the shelf. WT Rye 101 is fantastic.

Let it breath. This whiskey changes for the better after about a week of opening. It’s smooth enough to enjoy neat and spicy enough to be interesting. Spice and caramel after about a week. Try it - be patient.

Nose: Rye is actually quite missing. Noticeable oak with some ripe fruit. A little water can pull the rye out.Palate: There's a light sweetness up front, like paving the way to the quickly building-up heat with a little wood char. At the same time, the sweetness also keeps strengthening until it reaches the level of "licorice" as TWM mentioned above. Rye shows up when the heat starts to fade but still very subtle. The light bitterness, probably from rye, together with oak form the main theme inFinish: The sweetness extends and greatly softens the astringency left in the palate. The note of oak becomes very pleasant feeling like apple zest.Comment: As oppose to many so called high rye bourbons, this must be a "high corn" rye. Honestly, it really makes me feel like tasting some high rye bourbon. Don't get me wrong, though. This is a nice quality dram with a fun character that won't bore you. However, if you're looking for really "rye" rye whiskey, get something else.
Picked it up based on price and reviews. And I’m glad I did. I’m a newb but this rye really works for me. Nice spicy finish and not harshness or burning when enjoying neat. It stands up nicely in a classic Manhattan. For the price, this one is a no brainer.
For the same price as an average 80 proof Rye, you can have a 101 proof great flavored Rye. Usually beyond 100 proof the alcohol steals from the taste. But these people seem to have been able to maintain the proof and the taste. Both with rye and standard grain whiskey.
i have been drinking WT Rye for 40 plus years. Bartenders do not believe me that there is a Rye, only a bourbon by WT, so i soaked off a label and keep in my wallet. It blows my mind. Up to last year there was only 40 proof whiskey, now they increased it to 101 proof. Thats my housewarming present when i am invited to someones house.
The nose is more bourbon than rye. Upfront is corn sweetness, minerality, vanilla, charred oak followed by faint cinnamon, chocolate, dark cherry, and cedar. The palate is where the rye comes through as a greenish grain with spicy red fruits like plum, raspberry, and apple. Faint fruity cherry that quickly evolves in the mid then transitions into oaky cherry on the finish with charred tanins and chocolate. The finish is short lived and drops off with faint apple skin but the heat lingers for while given the 81 proof.Overall I love this whiskey. This bottle packs tons of oak flavors with minimal rye notes given the actual rye nature. It’s rather complex and easy sipping for the low proof and I highly recommend buying.
This rye has a very traditional “barely legal” (i.e. 51% rye in the mash bill) flavor profile, with fruit, caramel, baking spices, cracked rye grain, and some pink bubblegum to mix things up a little. Quality and proof are great for the price, and the whiskey is bold and fairly smooth. In my book, it’s tied with Rittenhouse BiB and Old Forester 100 for best rye $25 or under. Now go buy this and make Manhattans with it…you’ll be glad you did!
This is my favorite rye to date and, at eighteen bucks, the cheapest. In fact, if I could have only one whiskey under $30 a fifth, this would be it. Its fraternal twin bourbon was my go-to for many years, but this rye beats it handily. Do yourself a favor and grab a bottle. No, grab two. That first one will go quickly.
