101 on some serious steroids!

When my WT 101 ran out, I purchased this on a recommendation. The 101 is inferior than Rare Breed, which ought to cost twice as much. The cost is justified. Although it doesn't burn, this has a pleasant bite that you would expect from a barrel proof. It has pleasant spiciness and a nutty undertone, and I could taste the barrel in the finish. Will it be a favorite of yours? That is arbitrary. Is it appropriate for your bourbon shelf? Yes! You won't be dissatisfied.

A new favorite

My first Wild Turkey and I need to say that I was pleasantly surprised with this bourbon. Needles to say that you can't go wrong with a barrel proof bourbon. The Kentucky Hug given by this 114 proof whiskey is kind and pleasant, drinks more like a 100 proof. The nose is floral with hints of honey. The mouth is sweet and an almond aftertaste finishes the experience.Points of comparison: Old Forrester 1920, Penelope Cask Strenght and Noah's Mill - all in the 115 proof.

Best bang for the buck

So I am a fan of Wild Turkey products. 101 is my goto bourbon both for its price point and its flavor profile. If you like 101 and other WT products, you can't go wrong buying a bottle of Rare Breed. The vanilla and spice (I taste it as cinnamon) of 101 are strong in this version, but with the added smoothness of extra aging. You will not notice the higher ABV of Rare Breed as you might in other "stronger" release of your favorite bourbon. The ease with which this 116+ proof whiskey goes down is not to be underestimated. The only other bottle I consider comprable both in quality and price, is the Russel's Reserve Single Barrel Reserve, which is also a WT product. The advantage of the Rare Breed is the consistency. Being a blended bourbon, each bottle of Rare Breed is gonna taste darn near spot on to the last bottle. I have found that bottles of Russel's Single Barrel can be very hit and miss because of the lack of blending.

Best pour for the price

Bought a few months ago and have enjoyed several pours. It’s rich, well aged, has noticeable proof that doesn’t bite or burn. Compared to OF1920 OGD114, and JD Single Barrel Barrel Proof, WTRB shines above them. Vanilla, Caramel, Oak, Baking Spices, Brown Sugar/Molasses, and to round it out just a touch of dark fruits. I hope more people continue to hate on it so it doesn’t become another high prices allocated bourbon. Great pour.

The Russel's Reserve Single Barrel Reserve, another WT product, is the only other bottle I think compares in terms of both quality and cost. The consistency of the Rare Breed is a benefit. Due to the fact that Rare Breed is a blended bourbon, every bottle will taste almost identical to the previous. Because there isn't much blending, I've discovered that bottles of Russell's Single Barrel may be very hit or miss.

SUCCESS IN EVERY TASTE TEST

The top of the list is Rare Breed. Over the past few years, three of my friends and I have developed a taste for bourbon. We meet together three to four times a month and have conducted numerous taste tests. Even blind taste tests were conducted on some. We have tested every so-called "high end" bourbon, as well as popular brands like Kirkland from Costco. We find it incredible that "Rare Breed" consistently wins, especially given that it is 108 proof. Jimmy Russell and the entire staff at the Wild Turkey Distillery deserve praise for creating such a quality bourbon.

Sublime Whiskey

I've only been exploring bourbon in earnest for a year or so but have so far tried 15-20 that I consider more than just decent...my regular go-to's are Woodford Reserve and Wild Turkey 101 but I've also ventured into the select versions of Elijah Craig, Four Roses, Michter's, Jack Daniel's, 1792, Makers Mark, Buffalo Trace and others. Of all those this is the best booze I've yet tasted, without a doubt. At 117 proof it goes down as easily as a good 86 proof bourbon, and is much tastier with no alcohol burn. Higher proof whiskeys, I've learned, are more interesting and complex than the more so-called "drinkable" 80-90 proofs. Turbo Powered 101

Rare Breed is a high proof flavor bomb. From nose to finish you know you are drinking Wild Turkey. However, in addition to the standard vanilla, caramel, peanut, and spice, you get a huge uptick in a creamy & viscose mouthfeel. I also got a delicious “Dr. Pepper” kick with some dried fruit as well.The very best part is the finish. It just lasts forever. The spice kicks in along with cocoa, oak, a little tobacco, and just enough heat to remind you of the 56.4% ABV, but not in any way harsh. Rare Breed is a very nice sipping whiskey for sure.Is it worth $50? Is it worth almost twice the cost of 101? Yes, it is. I wouldn’t say it’s twice as good as 101. Very undervalued, this bourbon is actually quite good.
