Like other reviewers, this style of bike rack is not intended for four ADULT bikes. When the kids were little, this mostly worked as long as we alternated the direction of the bikes and remembered which ones worked better next to each other. It was truly like doing a puzzle that only has one solution. The heaviest bike must be loaded first so they are closest to the rack base. We drive a Tesla Y and the maximum rack weight (if you believe it) is incredibly limiting at 180lbs including the rack), but that's a whole different problem. For more than two bikes, this is one of the few options that works with this car. The rack is relatively easy to attach but it does take some adjusting to make secure and minimize wobble. Pros: Fantastic bike rack. Solid and swings open and closes easily. Easy enough to install. Looks nice. mounting bikes is easy.Rated at 40 lbs per bike max. Will realistically fit 3 comfortably.Cons: install to tighten the locking pin couldn't be done properly by someone without a good amount of strength. I'd imagine a wrench or some kind of leverage would be good to have shipped with it. Every other step to install and mount a bike could be done by anyone, but the tightening of the locking pin is a few bars higher than average. It is also just slightly tilted which is normal as per the locking bolt. That bugs me a bit.Would I buy it again? Yes.

We needed a 4 bike rack. Opted for this over Thule's similar version due to reviews & checking them out in person. Installation was easy. Design was good and function was also good...except my kid's bikes did not fit. My son (9yrs) has 20" tire bike and it did fit with some extra effort positioning...but barely. My daughter's (6) is smaller and I didn't know if it would work due to it's size and frame shape. It doesn't. Yakima (and others) sell top bar adapters to help step-through style frames be suspended on handing racks, but they do not fit kids bike. Normally we can put her bike in the back of our SUV, but on trips that space is taken, so no luck with using this rack for all four of us. Also, bike spacing for the adult bikes fit fine except the spacing is such ... MoreWe needed a 4 bike rack. Opted for this over Thule's similar version due to reviews & checking them out in person. So, if you have a bike that you have invested in, I wouldn't recommend this rack or the Thule version either...unless perhaps you buy the 4 bike rack and only load 2 bike, then you could space them to avoid friction/contact between bikes while driving. The swing feature works well and was easy to use...just not going to work for us with our kids bikes.

I bought this rack for the full swing feature to use with my truck. I also bought this rack for the price compared to a rack from 1-UP with the same features (multiple bike carry and can swing out). After 3 seasons of use, here's my thoughts:This rack is great for fitting 4 city/road bikes without much issue. However, this rack will not fit more than 2-3 full-size mountain bikes, unless you don't care about your bikes being all scratched and dented from smacking into each other on the drive to the trail head. I avoid this by placing padding/rags in between the touchpoints and securing each bike together with voile straps. The anti-rattle mechanism is ok, but I still find that there is too much play in the hitch after I tighten it all the way. I fixed this by using an aftermarket hitch tightener off Amazon. The swing-out feature is the best feature of this rack. It makes getting into my truck bed possible. Additionally, since this is a hanging-style bike rack, there is generally more ground clearance off the back your vehicle compared to a tray-style rack that sticks out low to the ground. This is useful when you are off-roading or overlanding with your bikes.
You get what you pay for—an affordable rack that can carry four street/hybrid bikes. It’s not going to be as good as a platform rack, but it does the job.Pros: Great for 2-3 bikes. Love the swing feature (but try to avoid doing this when fully loaded!), and overall ease of use.Cons: Doesn’t feel terribly secure at the hitch point when fully loaded. I wouldn’t trust out on a long trip; I’ll be staying on flat, even surfaces. I also won’t be taking any road trips with more than two on it. Really tight fit with four bikes. You will likely need a top tube adapter ($40/each).I wish there were a 2.5” hitch receiver option.
We’ve used this rack through two seasons of kids MTB racing and family rides. One season on a pickup and one on a mid-size SUV. As mentioned in other reviews, it barely fits 4 bikes, and they really need to be just the right size and frame shape. Probably 4 road bikes with flat top tubes fit best. In the real world, we barely squeeze 3 MTBs (S, M & L) onto it, but must carefully wrap forks and chainstays with homemade pool noodle foam and Velcro to prevent damage from vibration, etc.. And you need to buy Yakima’s top-tube bridge things if you have any kind of funky top-tube or tight frame size. Top-tube/bridge and seat post are held securely in place by Yakima’s provided loose plastic clips which can be easy to misplace. The rack does swing away nicely from even a ... The rack does swing away nicely from even a dropped pickup tailgate, but you must unscrew the swing securing bolt each time you need access to the rear and redo it once closed. Hitch fit is pretty good and seems more dependent on small hitch receiver variations than the rack itself. Some minor fading of the plastic parts after 18 months outside. Metal parts are still glossy and nice. Overall, this is really an OK rack for occasional 3 bike family use, especially if you’re not fussy about your bikes. A 3-4 bike family with higher end bikes will probably want to look elsewhere. I’m probably moving on to a 4-bike tray rack.
I had a FullTilt 5 (without the swing arm). It bent after the first use, a three day road trip.I used to have a swing arm rack from Yakima nine years ago. It worked well for several years. My cirremt roof box is Yakima too. So I had trust in Yakima’s quality. But this time I am very disappointed. The rack was new. First use was a three day road trip. I only had three bikes. Each is 24lb to 28lb. The total load is 80-90lb. The rack is supposed to be able to take five bike each 35lb. With just half of the max load, after three days, it’s bent. It’s now noticeably lean toward aft (the road). It’s the horizontal tube (which sticks into the hitch) that was bent (curved).I don’t think it’s safe to use any more.I can’t find a FullTilt5 on rei.com. So want to leave ... Functionality of the rack is great. The problem is the mechanism that attaches and holds it into your receiver. There is a wedge that expands inside the receiver bar that is supposed to wedge the rack into place. Additionally there is a "failsafe" button that pops out into the side holes in your receiver to complete the lock. The problem is you can't turn the red receiver knob hard enough to make the wedge tight enough to prevent the thing from walking out of the receiver (and yes, I did lock it with the key after it wouldn't turn any longer). AND the button that is your "failsafe" is waaaay too shallow. A few bumps in the road and this button will retract enough that it's useless.I purchased in June of 2018 and I have had no fewer than 6 situations where I had ... A few bumps in the road and this button will retract enough that it's useless.I purchased in June of 2018 and I have had no fewer than 6 situations where I had to reseat the rack because it was inches away from popping out of the receiver. Foolishly, I would just go ahead and reseat it and check it occasionally until I saw it wandering again. I know that anything in your receiver should be checked for safety, but it is unreasonable to expect a check before every trip and the wandering happens far too often.Last week I was out of town and the rack popped out of the hitch when my wife was driving to work. Luckily it happened on a low speed side street so the person behind her was able to dodge that hunk of bouncing death. If this had happened on a highway at 60+ mph, the destruction of expensive bikes would have been a lot easier to handle than killing people driving behind me.I called REI and the warranty is a year so I will be ditching this accident waiting to happen for another option. But interestingly, they said they have a pin that might solve the problem and make it more secure. If such a thing exists why has this rack not been recalled and that pin made standard? Seriously, do not purchase this rack. Yakima, who the tested this piece of equipment?
I haven't used it much, but it's a pretty good rack for my needs. Assembly is relatively easy, some minor fiddling to get the large bolt through upright and swing arm. It was packaged very securly. It's heavy. I feel the hitch locking mechanism is pretty straight forward and reliable. Do watch out for the wedge in the hitch as you insert it, as it can sometimes protrude enough to prevent you from sliding the rack into the receiver hitch. It works great on my hatchback; the bikes swing completely out of the way. Both hinges/pivot points on the swing arm lock when collapsed or extended to avoid the rack from accidentally swinging open or closed. There is an additional bolt to further secure the swing arm while traveling; it's enough space to get a hand in for tightening between the bumper and rack on my car.The rack/fork the bicycles sit on, lifts up and locks in place easily and is easily lowered and secured. The adjustable bike and strap holders are easy to adjust and the straps feel secure and durable. The integrated security cable is nice too. It comes with 2 keys, the same key works the hitch and cable locks. The keys have numbers on them, write it down and keep is safe. If you lose your keys, there are no markings on the locks. Yakima may be able to get it from the serial number, I don't know; I imagine you'd need proof of purchase for that as well. It easily locks into the front right fork of the rack without a key and stows completely in the upright tube when not in use. The cable is only long enough to go over the bikes and into the lock; you won't be able to weave it through easily removable bike parts. It also means that should the straps fail, there isn't much slack in the cable for your bike(s) to fall/slip off the rack and on to the ground.
This product is perfect for me. With kids, 2 big dogs, and frequent summer travel that we bring bikes on, it suits our needs. Being able to load the back of my SUV, or let the dogs out without removing the bikes or the rack makes this an A+ product. The swing-out feature is very convenient. It is heavy-duty and has now held up great for its third midwestern summer. Kids' and ladies' bikes will require a tube bike frame adaptor to fit properly. Would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for the convenience of a swing-out bike rack.
