A quick update after an issue. In my original review I noted a couple of quality related issues. That has come home. With a prominent gig pending I had the neck-P pup fail in rehearsal. Panning to it yielded zero while panning away was nothing but J. Both active and passive. So it goes for a warranty repair. But I stilled gigged it for one song that needed low D and I didn't want to drop the E on my other basses. The EQ suite was/is robust enough to compensate and got me close to the tone I wanted with the bridge-J pup alone. That's the good news. But the episode cost the model a 'star'.On a side issue, the Yamaha hardshell case is not worth acquiring. It will not securely hold the instrument, but looks great not doing it. I held back a while before commenting on this one. I am new to 5 string but I've been a bassist for 45 years. I've played many 5's with no issue, just never lived with one. That said, this is a great 5 string bass. Fit and finish is not perfect, but very good. There are a lot features. First up, the mitered neck joint, angled-relief through string bridge and reversible bridge saddles yield fabulous tone. The sustain falls between the smoothness of a neck-through and the edge of a bolt-on. Real nice. That flat radius fingerboard took a bit to get used to, but it is fine for me. I have fairly small hands but have no problem with the neck. String spacing is very tight from nut to mid point, but gets much wider by the bridge. Works well for me. The active EQ is ... The active EQ is excellent, but would benefit from a mid frequency switch. Still- very, very good. Passive works well, too. Between the pickup fader and three band active you can get just about any tone possible.Out of the box the bass required a truss rod adjustment (3/8 turn left) to add much needed relief and the E string saddle needed an intonation shift. Easily done and successful. The gigbag case is OK (nice to get one at all) but I did get a hardshell from Yamaha. I restrung the bass with La Bella Deep Talking flatwounds (my favorite string) and so far have been able to use their standard version as opposed to the "through-body" strings due to the angled relief at the bridge. Those strings would be broken by a standard through bridge. No breaks so far.The bass is pretty heavy so beware. I installed Schaller Strap locks. The pickups are quite good with a vintage edge. Finish-wise there is one fret that is not perfect but does not impact anything, and the pickups seem "lightly mounted" (not as firmly in place as could be). But not an issue.Visually the dark tobacco sunburst is stunning. I am getting a lot comments on how good this looks and sounds.Bottom Line: Great Sound, Great Playability, Great Looks, Nice Value!

This bass is an excellent buy. I can't say enough good things about this bass. I have been wanting for a while now a 5-string P/J bass and I believe I have found the one. I bought a sire p7 earlier this year and thought it played great but I had a hard time finding the right tones and I spent more time messing with the knobs than enjoying playing it. I sold it because I have other basses that I like more and thought I would give up on the 5-string P/J bass for a while. Then I saw this yamaha bb735a nd thought I would give it a go and I am so glad did. I had never played a yamaha bass before but I figured that because of their reputation and the high level players that endorse them that it will be worth the try. Right out of the box I could tell that this is a quality instrument and it was already set up to play. It was in pretty good tune, the action was about right, and the neck was straight. The playability is great, the mids, lows, and highs are all awesome, and the bass is not very heavy. The thing I like the most is that the passive tone is great and it does not have a significant volume cut when you switch it from active. The p-bass sound is nice and low and can give you old school tones or more modern tones. The jazz pickup adds a nice high end for enhancing slap tones, jazz, or funk. This bass is a keeper and I look forward to playing it for many years to come. I never thought I would be a Yamaha guy but know I can say that I am.

[I am writing this review 4 months into owning this instrument] After researching multiple 5-strings in this price range, and with the help of Matt from Sweetwater, I pulled the trigger on the Yamaha BB735a. I needed an alternative to my main p-bass workhorse, without spending a crazy amount of money. Something that can get me by gigging in musicals, as well as playing covers in a pop-punk band. My bass was setup surprisingly well out of the box. Action, intonation, pickup height were all spot on to what I would normally want. Only had to make a quick truss rod adjustment, and it was perfect. Love how the knobs have a labeling guide, and the included gig bag will certainly get you by if you're not doing aggressive traveling. The build quality is wonderful, and feels ... Love how the knobs have a labeling guide, and the included gig bag will certainly get you by if you're not doing aggressive traveling. The build quality is wonderful, and feels much more premium than the price you pay for it. So far, I have only used the passive side of the bass. Coming from the p-bass, it took me a little bit to find the right sound I wanted out of this thing. But once I found it, it felt like 'home'. When you include the active side, there are so many different sounds that can come out of this thing. Versatility was the main thing I needed, and versatility is what you get! If you're asking yourself, "should I get this bass?" The answer is "yes". Great build quality, great versatility, for under $? There's a reason why this bass is backordered all the time. If it's in stock, then your answer should be a "definitely yes".
Overall:Ive had this bass a year now. So I can review it after some of the newness has worn off. Other than the sound. The weight and the smoothness on the back of the neck makes you not want to put it down. Somehow it seems to sound better now after a year. Its a beautiful bass. I have the brown sunburst. I get compliments everytime I pull it out. Great bottoom and mids. The highs are good also but if you dail in too much it gets harsh. So set the treble at 50% or less. The bottom end is outstanding. Its easy to get a great sound in passive mode also. The treble knob works as a tone knob on passive mode. I did another review because I didnt think my review or the others did this bass much justice. Its a 5 star professional bass. Ive been playing since 1980. So I ... No reason to buy a fender jazz or precision, spector or warwick. Ive played them. And this sounds better plays better and is more comfortable. If youre trully looking to buy a new bass in any price range.. Pick this one up and play it. You will fall in love. Thats not my opinion its a fact. If youre looking for an affordable 5 string bass with mordern electronics . This is the one. It doesnt matter if you want the p/j setup or not. You will find any tone ( other than the musicman) with this bass. I played a fender P/j and this one blows it away. At more than half the cost. BUY IT NOW BEFORE THEY GO UP OR STOP MANUFACTURING THEM..
Very impressed with the BB735A! The neck is thin, dark coffee sunburst finish is perfect, zero dead spots, switching between active/passive is smooth does not affect volume level which is great not having to tweak volumes (passive through pedal board). Passive mode tone control and pick up blend already has great tone, active mode adds to the palette of tones/slap. The B-string sounds clean. I get compliments at gigs band mates enjoy the tone and looks are great-when I say it's a Yamaha they say-WOW. I found that I can play almost any genre with this instrument getting the right tones.
Sound:The bass has responsive pickups and an active eq that has some serious sweep on all three parametersFeatures:Super solid build, knobs/pots feel good. The sweeps on the active eq are pretty wide.Ease of Use:All on flat sounds nice. Not difficult to dial in tone quickly. The next is pretty thin and wide enough with comfortable spacing on the strings. The fret board radius is pretty flat.Quality:Fit and finish are stellar. It's way more function over fashion, but really well done. Frets feel great.Value:Absolutely. Super solid and seriously versatile.Overall:Traditionally, I'm a 4 string guy these days, but I want the range back. I've owned several 5 strings, mostly Ibanez. Great basses, but the string spacing on their 5 string models is just too narrow for my taste. This bass has super comfy string spacing with a super flat fret board. Out of the box, I had to loosen the truss rod a hair over a 1/4 turn and it was perfect. Just a hair of intonation setting (totally normal for a new instrument) and I was good to go. Passive, this bass sounds rich and full and responds tonally just like you'd expect a P bass with PJ pups. However active, this bass comes to life. The active eq is dead simple to use. The knobs have the halfway stop in them as well as the blend control so there's less guess work. Add a little bass on the active eq and this bass growls pretty fierce. This is my first Yamaha instrument and certainly won't be my last.
I've been playing bass guitar professionally since high school in the early 1970's. I've owned and performed with several bass guitars over the years.. from pre-CBS mfd. Fender Precision and Jazz, Gibson 1970's SG EB3, Rickenbacker 4001, to Peavy T40. As you can already gather, I've almost exclusively been partial to the "passive" pick up axes. However, in the professional bassist arena versatility is a must, gearwise as well as skill set. I didn't own a 5-string yet, and while shopping for one, I luckily came across a Yamaha BB735A in a very slightly blemished condition (a non issue for my applications) for under $700.00 USD (can't blame or fault any envy / jealousy) and I've been in love with mine ever since it arrived in an extremely nice gig bag.. set up and ... Now I'm looking for a BB734A for the same price, and a BBP and a Nathan East 5-String, because I'm certain that I'll love playing them just as much. You just can't beat Yamaha's quality and "BANG" for your Buck.. period!
Overall:This was my first "big" purchase and i was skeptical but i hung in there. When i opened the box i was surprised with the case that came with the bass first of all. It feels very protective and I like how it is soft on the inside. As far as playing, you are getting what you pay for with this bass. I would go as far to say that it probably could have been more expensive because it is well made and the sound it produces is amazing. You get a lot of nice low end out of this guitar with crispy mids and bright highs. I love the sound but i recently switched the original strings with flat wound D'addario strings since i play more blues and r&b. Pair it with the 500 fender rumble 2x10 and a 500 watt 15'in bass cab and you could fill an auditorium with nice sound.
The bass have the same shape of body like old series yamaha bb (424......614). The hardware is little bit different and comes in black chrome color what looks better by my opinion. The pickups are new (seems like standard size) and good. The sound is different than old yamaha.......can say better (improved). Can say that I'm in love with yamaha beacuse of their old series and now they are even better.Buying new yamaha bb models is definitely worth it.Quality is very good. Can say with range of more expensive brands.
