I bought the Yamaha JR2 for my daughter as a Christmas present and I was surprised. I didn't expect it to be that good because of its price but WOW!!! The resonance is unbelievable given that it's not made from solid wood and the neck is so comfortable, perfect for kids who are learning. This is my third guitar from Better Music and they never disappoint me. The guitars are well set up and the packaging is unbelievable every time. It just shows how much they value their customers and that's why I keep coming back. I don't usually leave reviews but I appreciate what these guys are doing. Keep up the good work!

An obviously well liked and well cared for guitar has found a new home.

They were all fun to play, but being 3/4 or thereabouts scale guitars the tone suffered from the diminished size of the guitars. Smaller Guitars equals smaller tone. The tone is much fuller than the other offerings and the playability is head and shoulders above the others. I had to do extensive work to frets, string heights and neck adjustment to get a decent amount of playability from each of the other guitars. The Jr-2 needed no adjustments. I only oiled the fingerboard because the heat in the house is very dry and all of the guitars benefitted from some Fender Fingerboard Rescue fingerboard treatment. The Tobacco burst finish was great other than a few hard to notice scratches. I dressed up wear that was evidenced on the edges of the binding on the top and bottom of the guitar body due to use. The guitar was obviously used substantially, but the condition of the guitar is still great. I'm very happy with this one.

This is a good guitar for the money. It's built well seems to be staying in tune decent and sounds decent. This is a small guitar so if you're expecting deep rich acoustic tone, it's not going to happen. However, this isn't a toy, it's a real instrument. I bought it for my 7 year old and didn't want to spend a bundle until they were a bit more responsible regarding taking care of an instrument and until we see whether they actually want to take the time to learn to play. This is a perfect guitar for that situation. I initially thought it might not be staying in tune well but as it's settling in, it's fine. I haven't changed the strings yet however when I do, I will polish the frets as well and expect the playability and sound to improve. I actually tried a Luna while I was checking these out and really liked the Luna neck better however when I played it, it sounded terrible in comparison. Much more "toy like". This comes with a decent gig bag and a truss rod tool. Overall, satisfied with the purchase and would recommend it as a good starter instrument. If they stick with it, then you can consider going for a Martin or Taylor.

Great for beginners
7 June 2024

It feels good to hold and is great for any age beginner. Since it's small, its easy for people to learn how to easily switch between chords and stretch their fingers across for more complicated chords. It doesn't stay in tune very well on all strings but for the most part that's ok. I would say if anything it goes out of tune daily.

Great guitar

I had been looking for a travel guitar a while now but could never find one. This came up after trawling the Internet FROM PMT. I'd seen a few reviews on this so ordered it.It was delivered very quickly and well packaged. I think for the money I was expecting more but with a gig bag included I was happy. After tuning it I played it and wow! For a 3/4 the acoustic resonance is fantastic. The frets are easy to place because this guitar has the small fingered user in mind. My problem is I have fat fingers and the gaps between the strings are smaller in relation to a full size Dreadnought. Despite this, it takes some getting used to but it's great playing it on the sofa.My alteria motive is to introduce it to the wife to play also. Its a good beginner's guitar. Best to start with a good guitar first, buy a cheap beginners guitar and you will become uninterested in playing. For me it's great and I can take put it on the parcel shelf in the car. Good sounding guitar, will never replace a full size Dreadnought but it's better than most 3/4 guitar for the money.

I use it as a Terz guitar
9 June 2020

The 21 scale is just like my Martin D28 from the 3rd fret to the bridge. So it makes sense to try tuning it G to g, which is terz-guitar tuning. (Martin makes terz guitars; they might be custom orders now.) However, with the factory-supplied light-gauge .012 strings, the guitar sounds much better in E to e standard tuning, which is the maker's intent. So I got a set of .011-.050 GHS 'Extra Light strings, and with these it sounds very good in terz tuning. 4 stars because it more thatn meets expectations. It's great as a travel guitar, or to take to the Park, or whatever. But I can't give it 5 stars, because what would I then give a Martin terz guitar, should I ever get one? :-)

Wanted an easy playing guitar that didn’t take up space and easy to take away. The jr2 fitted the bill but you do suffer a bit of loss of tone especially base. I have small hands but even so chord fingering can be a bit tight.Having said that the guitar seems well made and doesn’t need retuning every five minutes.Overall impressed with Yamaha quality and value.

Perfect Little Travel Buddy
9 February 2016

I am really new to guitar playing. About 6 weeks. I find as a mom, that the times I have alone are often sitting in a parking lot in the front seat of my car waiting on a teenager to be done with some sort of practice, or social affair. Looking to get as much practice time as I can with my new instrument ( I play some others but never anything with strings.) I decided to find a travel guitar. Besides front seat playing we do travel often, sometimes as a family, and sometimes just me with the teenager who is often at some kind of sports practice and I am in a hotel... anyway this is the perfect guitar for my needs. It's really small. Which is what I wanted. I went to Guitar Center and looked at the travel guitars. They didn't really have many in stock, and though I ... MoreI am really new to guitar playing. It's really small. Which is what I wanted. I went to Guitar Center and looked at the travel guitars. They didn't really have many in stock, and though I liked the Baby Taylor (BT1), it was a little bigger and I thought I would save the extra money to put towards a real, main guitar. The Yamaha JR2.. or 3/4 size Folk fit my needs perfectly. The action is great. The neck width not too small.. actually think it's the same as my big Dreadnaught. I was toying between the JR1 and the JR2, but the salesman at GC said the bag is worth the extra few dollars. At the store they only had the tobacco finish which I really wasn't a fan of, so went home and ordered the natural on line. I would have to agree with the salesman. The gig bag that comes with the JR2 is fantastic. Great shoulder straps (backpack), good padding, pockets, and really smart looking too (It's milk chocolate brown, sometimes hard to see in pictures). Plenty of room for a couple books, my capo, tuner and extra picks with room to spare... even my keys, phone and wallet. If you want a comfy little traveler, that sounds good for it's small size (sound wasn't my utmost priority), is comfortable to play, set up perfectly with good action right out of the box, I highly recommend the Yamaha JR2 (3/4 Scale Folk).

First I just want to say Sam Ash did everything in their power to make things right so this review is no reflection on them only the guitar itself.First off this is a cool little guitar if Yamaha wouldn't have done such a bad job with it.Out of the boxIntonation was off by a half step and sounded horrible. I had to compensate the saddle with a file and almost file off the whole saddle to the point of leaving just a small breakpoint towards the nut of the guitar. It was like it was sitting in a 120 degree warehouse for 2 years. I oiled the fretboard and looks and feels great now.Nut is cut just short of the fret board on each side and leaves a little groove where the nut should have come all the way out to the ends of the fretboard. (Pretty Sad QC yamaha!) Doesn't affect playing just the looks of the guitar. If yamaha would have taken pride in this little guitar it would have been awesome out of the box. After 3 hours of work now have it playable and sounds really nice. I shouldn't have had to do all this work to a guitar. I have other cheaper Yamaha guitars FS650S that came to me in perfect playable shape and cost less so I know Yamaha can do a nice QC job on their cheaper guitars.Yamaha just didn't care about the quality that went into this great little guitar. Not everyone can do all the things I did to this guitar to make it playable so if you can't do what I did above you will hate this guitar.I do have pictures of the filing of the bridge and the nut being too small so if you think this is just a bad eggs review you can ask me for the pictures and I would be more than happy to send or post the bad workmanship.
