I'm not a fan of having to reassign the inputs (And not being able to rename things). Example: I had to set up my HTPC as the DTV, my DVD player as CD player (due to optical outputs) and my DTV receiver as DVD player (since it was only system to have coax-digital output and only coax digital input on receiver is for DVD player!). Also, if you connect a device through the HD Component connections, be prepared to also connect the receiver to your HDTV with the same. It will not process component connections via the HDMI from receiver to HDTV. But after the config has been set, I woke up a ten year old set of Bose Acoustimass 15's and they sound really awesome now! Depending on your level of knowledge, if it's not that great, I would go up one level to the RX-V465 and ... MoreI'm not a fan of having to reassign the inputs (And not being able to rename things). If the next model up that allows you to run audio out of your HDMI is too expensive and you want to settle for optical you can still enjoy Blu-Rays that use DTS-HD MA sound from your PlayStation 3. Simply go to the Audio/Video settings and choose BitStream for every option. You will be notified that the changes will compress the sound and offer it at a slightly lower quality. Your PS3 will then down convert the sound to DTS and send it along the optical line for you to still be able to enjoy it in surround. Most Blu-Rays are still written in Dolby Digital or have a Dolby Digital track on them. For the few exceptions such as Wall-E this is an acceptable compromise for not shelling out the big bucks on TruHD sound systems. Enjoy 5.1 now and simply wait for the price ... MoreIf the next model up that allows you to run audio out of your HDMI is too expensive and you want to settle for optical you can still enjoy Blu-Rays that use DTS-HD MA sound from your PlayStation 3. Yamaha is a Great Product. However, this 5.1 surround sound is very complicated to set up. The sound is great, and power if perfect, but it is a nightmare to set up the speaker surround mode for every piece of audio equipment you plug in. I wish it had a preset selection as a "default" for everything. I spent hours trying to set this thing up. I would have rather went with a DJ amp with 4 speakers 2 front and 2 rear like a Pyle. I still never completely got the audio output on ALL front, rear, surround speakers to an acceptable setting. I finally just settled for power on the front only. I am no idiot when it comes to audio set up, but never had this much trouble. My thoughts. Good luck.

As you may have guessed from my comments above, I primarily needed a way of adding multiple component and HDMI to my HDTV which only has 2 HDMI's and one Component input. As far as audio goes, I have two bose bookshelf speakers stacked on top of each other sitting to one side of the tv so the audio set up is less than ideal but that being said, the Yamaha has plenty of power to drive them and they sound much better, especially the base, than with my older receiver. If price were no object I would have liked a unit with HDMI audio and 1080p video upscaling so my PS2 games would look a little better on my 1080p tv. The cheapest unit I saw with those features ran over 3x the cost of this unit and most were 4 to 6x.
A previous poster stated that the receiver was not capable of audio over HDMI. This may be true, but I only have it hooked up with the optical out on my HDTV going in to the receiver. The sound is absolutely incredible. It is so clear and loud, and the 5.1 setup just blows your socks off with a good set of speakers. I am using a Philips surround speaker set from a previous digital amp. The quality of the receiver itself is just excellent. Nice heavy, sturdy receiver that reminds me of the good old well built receivers I have come to respect from years ago, only this is completely updated with all of the new goodies. The bargain from newegg is unmatched, as I have researched everyone and this amp goes for $70+ more everywhere else. Once again Newegg has come through ... MoreA previous poster stated that the receiver was not capable of audio over HDMI. I am getting 5.1 out of my HDMI from my media center. My routing is from a Gigabyte 4550 video card (HDMI) into my Toshiba 32AV502U HDMI (1) and then running toslink (optical audio) out.... this feeds the DTV/CBL optical input. This combination works great (if any of you having problems can use this info). All I have to do to switch to the CPU is hit the HDMI1 on my TV. Sometimes you have to switch around between Straight and PLII to find the best sound..... when we get the new audio card (that does Pro Logic II) we will be using the multi channel input. It was either this receiver or an Onkyo (although the Onkyo does not have the multi channel input)
This is an older 5.1 stereo. It has a lot of capabilities, most of which I'm not using. The sound quality is good, and with 100 watts per channel RMS, there's enough power to protect my 70 watt speakers. I mainly use this stereo for streaming music to the speakers using a Google Chromecast Audio dongle, and funneling audio from the TV to the speakers via a digital optical cable. The remote is a learning remote that can control my LG TV, but alas, not my Sony Blu-Ray player. I would not count on this remote being able to learn to control some newer TV's, Blu-Ray players, etc. For the manual, search for "RX-V363_U.pdf" and select the link at the usa.yamaha site.
My father has a Yamaha receiver as well (RX-V465) that he paid $100 plus more for than I did this, yet is only 5 watts per channel more powerful. For a mid-range receiver, I highly recommend this. I about bought a 7.1 receiver instead (but the same power as this), but for the extra $200-$250 it would have cost me, I couldn't justify doing so. I'm perfectly happy with 5.1, and right now I'm only using 2 Front Speakers (Polk Audio Monitor 30's) with no subwoofer, and the sound quality is amazing. I can't wait to hook up the Polk Center CS1 Speaker and the two Klipsch Bookshelf speakers I just purchased as well.
Worked terrific for the few years I had it. Amazing sound, never had any errors, breaks; never skipped a beat. Was THE integral part in my home theater setup, and could really crank out my music with unreal clarity. Especially liked the banana clip hookups for my front speakers.Loved it so much I bought another Yamaha to replace it (RX-V773).
I like the Night setting that compresses the sound for low listening levels at night so the sound doesn't get too loud. Also described as it narrows the dynamic range of the soundtracks and makes dialog easier to hear at lower volumes.I was disappointed the the HDMI cables do not support sound! I have to make a last minute trip to the local [...] to by a Optical Digital audio cable for the DVR and a Coaxial Digital audio cable for the Blu Ray player. I could have used the old RCA jack cables but the whole idea is digital and HD with my system. Other Receivers do use the HDMI cable for sound. All in all it is a great receiver for the price.
