Excellent at keeping breast milk frozen

I bought this 5 days ago after researching for 2 weeks how to travel with frozen breast milk. We drove to North Carolina with our infant so it took 13hours instead of the usual 9 hours. I heard this cooler was the best at keeping liquids frozen so I followed all of the recommendations plus a bit extra. First I lined the inside with aluminum foil, then I placed a frozen gel pack at the bottom of the yeti hopper 8 and filled it with as many frozen breast milk bags that I could. I placed another frozen gel pack on the top of the milk bags. Any gaps were filled with aluminum foil to reduce air. I then closed zipper and taped the zipper to protect from any air flow. After taping the zipper I placed the packed yeti in my freezer for 32 hours prior to driving. I placed the yeti cooler in a plastic bag so that it wouldn't get wet. Let me tell you, we were delayed due to inclement weather but when we arrived at our destination my breast milk was still frozen solid! I highly recommend this cooler for any traveling mother who exclusively feeds their baby breast milk and is afraid to spoil milk. My only regret is not buying the 12 for more storage. I'm absolutely satisfied.

Holds in the cold
28 December 2022

I bought this bag over 4 years ago when I moved to Florida. It's I believe their first generation of the bag. It has a few issues I think they've fixed with the newer generations; however, it keeps things cold. I was one of the travelers with a certain airline that canceled my flight and lost my bag. I had packed some frozen steaks and chops for Christmas dinner. I put some frozen gell packs in with them and filled the bag with some clothes. Four days later, the airline finally recovered my bag. I was dreading opening and smelling my cooler. To my surprise the gell packs and meat were still frozen solid. This thing will keep your stuff cold!

Not Worth the Money
18 January 2023

I work 12 hour shifts and was looking for a cooler that wasn't too big and would keep my lunch / snacks cold for 12 hours. I've always heard how fantastic Yeti products are and assumed that it would be far and away the best option. I did read a lot of reviews that seemed to be overwhelmingly positive. I did find others that had good reviews, but I figured I couldn't go wrong with Yeti. The YETI flip 8 is $200. That's a lot for a work lunch cooler, but worth the money in my opinion if it lives up to the YETI standared I've been hearing about for years. I went to a YETI store and when I asked the clerk if the cooler would keep items frozen / cold for 12 hours they actually laughed saying that it would be good for 24. Wow, I was sold. However, after three months I've been very disappointed with the results. I also bought two bricks of the YETI ice at the store because they told me it was the best. I actually keep the cooler wide open in my garage freezer when I'm not at work. The YETI Ice bricks are also always kept in my freezer. I would say the cooler perform "OK" staying "Cool" for the full 12 hours. It definitely doesn't keep items "Cold". I work in an indoor temperature controlled environment, the cooler stays under my desk and I'm always very careful to only open the cooler for a very short amount of time (10-12 seconds). It's definitely very well made and heavy duty, but not worth the $200.

Perfect Size Cooler for Post Hike Refreshments
24 August 2022

I have owned a lot of Yeti products, and it is rare that there is a product I don't like, so it was no surprise that I loved this one too.I have owned my Hopper Flip 18 for a couple years, and absolutely love it. That cooler was a bit large for keeping in the car for our post hike refreshments, so I opted to get a smaller version. At first I was a little concerned about the size, but it is perfect. Typically after a hike I like to have a couple waters, Gatorades, and some beer for my wife and I. This cooler fit that perfect, while still being able to hold enough ice to keep things cold for the day.Typically our hikes are at least an hour drive, plus 8+ hours on the trail. There have been a ton of reviews about the ice melting before the end of the day, so I am not sure what people are doing. But on an 80+ degree day, locked in the back of a car (obviously hotter) for 9 hours, I still had plenty of ice, with minimal melt. The photos attached are prior to loading in Jeep, and after we got back from our hike.. The ice has barley moved. You just need to remember NOT to put warm beverages in a cooler then toss the ice on. Also Ice is cheep. No need to only throw a few cubes in. Pile that ice in, and you are good to go..

Trust what Yeti says!

This is not a complaint, but rather just my amusing experience.I just noticed that the Yeti website now says that Hopper coolers are NOT compatible with dry ice because they are airtight. I swear that it was previously only advertised as leakproof. The Hopper 12 cooler was a gift from my kids...fortunately...I don't think I would have purchased it for myself at that price! But I wouldn't trade it for anything now. The cooler and zipper are absolutely unbelievable!!! I can't imagine a cooler with a zipper to be leakproof...but it is! In fact, my Hopper 12 is AIRTIGHT!!! I once used it to transport ice cream with dry ice. When I picked up my Hopper 12 cooler I noticed that it was bulging on all sides. Unbelievable Cooler!

In order to travel to Japan and stay for a year, he needed to take a large supply of medication that needed to be kept within a certain temperature range at all times. We used freezable silicone sandwich bags which could be easily configured around the meds (the bags could be filled with ice and reused numerous times) and a bluetooth thermometer to keep an eye on the temp thereby avoiding nervously opening the lid. It took several iterations of how much ice to use and how long the temp would hold, but eventually we got it right. The meds and “ice” fit perfectly and the proper temps were maintained for the 32 hours from Pennsylvania to Tokyo. After his arrival, our son put the meds in the hotel fridge and found that the fridge was actually less reliable than the Yeti!! Fast forward 10 weeks. Our son has moved to at least a half dozen different hotels and has relied each time on the Yeti to protect his expensive medication. Having the Yeti perform at this level has eased his (and our) mind and allowed him to enjoy his travel experience instead of constantly worrying about whether or not his meds are safe. We can’t thank Yeti enough for living up to the hype!!! Perhaps other travelers can learn from this experience. We are true believers!

Works for transporting refrigerated medicine
20 February 2023

We bought the 12 cooler for the purpose of transporting refrigerated medication on a trans Atlantic flight. I tested the cooler and ice packs weeks before departure and it worked extremely well when the removable liner was chilled in advance - it held 1 cup of water to 34-46F for 30 hours in ambient temperatures of 65-74F. I opened cooler 4 times to test the temperature and to mimic what might happen on the trip (if TSA opened cooler to inspect it).Our college aged son traveled to Europe for his study abroad with success - meds arrived safely. Unfortunately his trip was cut short and he had to return prematurely. Given the limited fridge space in his dorm fridge, he could not cool the liner. Without a chilled liner, the cooler did not keep temps as low for as long- it stayed below 46F for about 16 hours. We used 5 frozen gel packs each time. We used the packs that his meds are shipped with from the specialty pharmacy. When I tested more than 5 gel packs or when I used other gel packs (Shock Coolers), the water we were using as a test solution froze; his meds cannot be frozen. But he could’ve used more than 5 packs when liner wasn’t pre-chilled.He had no trouble with any of the 3 airlines he used - he carried this cooler on as a carry bag and 12 cooler fit in the overhead compartments on Swiss Air, Helvetica Air, and Lufthansa. I did investigate if Swiss Air would not count this a carry on, but as medically necessary equipment (so he could bring a carry on bag as well), but Swiss Air said no, it qualified as a carry on. I didn’t bother asking the other airlines after that refusal.Hope this review helps anyone else who has to fly with refrigerated meds. We will keep this cooler to use on future trips or when the electricity fails and our fridge gets too warm, and I purchased a second cooler (the 8) when it was on sale. That smaller cooler will be for trips that are shorter in length (and therefore require less meds). Our son did say that the 12 got a little heavy to haul through multiple airports.
