Wow, what an experience this mattress has been! First you will be amazed that they can mail you a mattress in a 3 foot by 1 foot box. Once it arrived I immediately opened it and found the most magical vacuum packed mattress I had ever seen. There is a lot of protective plastic to remove from around it which is how they kept it in the box. I do want to mention you may not want a 12 inch mattress for the top of a bunk bed. It is so solid and plush that it is right at the top of the rail on the top of a bunk bed. My boys have slept on this the last five nights and have slept wonderfully.

You wouldn't think such a high quality mattress would smush up like that, but it does! When you cut the package, you hear a big whoosh, and then the magic starts happening! It came in a relatively small box and was wrapped in plastic that had to be cut away for the mattress to expand. There were warnings that it might shift violently when opening, but it didn't. There were also warnings that there might be a bad smell for the first 24 hours but there was no bad smell. The mattress expanded quickly but I still left it alone to expand fully for a day or so as directed. Zinus claims this mattress design is to help with spinal alignment & control motion transfer. My husband & I tested it individually, was a little hard because it’s a twin, mostly just our son has used it. We haven’t had the mattress long enough to give feedback on longevity of mattress before seeing any sagging or issues. Or to say how well it’s improved sleep. Our son uses it because it is only a twin we received. I can say I noticed no difference between this mattress and any we’ve bought from a mattress store. It's affordable, and seems to be well built. There's no way to truly know this until years later to understand how it stands the test of time, but as far as I can tell, it feels well built.The mattress is specified as firm, but keep in mind that it also comes with an integrated topper, which I personally am NOT a fan of. This of course, all boils down to personal preference, and I prefer firmer beds. I have never liked toppers because they negate the firmness, and in this case, it's worse because I cant remove it- it's sewn on and completely integrated. When I lay on the mattress, it feels fine but softer than I like- I would prefer no topper and more firmness. Of course, if you like toppers, then you'll probably love this mattress. It is comfortable enough to sleep on.The mattress is 12 inches thick- 8 inches of spring supported mattress, and 4 inches (so it appears from the externals) of topper. I was hoping I could turn the mattress over and sleep on the bottom side, but the springs are slightly exposed, and while it is firmer, it is also quite uncomfortable due to the springs. I am putting this mattress in the guest bedroom, so it's not my primary mattress, and will not be a problem for me. My guess is that most people like toppers, which is why products like this exist, so it should be perfectly fine for my guests.
