ATH-M20X for Mixing and Monitoring

I needed an abuse friendly headphone for mixing in live performances with large groups. I just used ATH-M20X on a 24 channel YAMAHA mixer over the weekend. The feed consisted of 17 - SM 58, 3 - SM 57, one computer keyboard, one senheiser cordless. There were, 14 vocals, 2 - harmoniums, tabla, khol and pakhawaj, prerecorded synthesiser preludes fed from computer. It performed well for the money I paid. Some problems are:1. I did not expect soundstage at this price, it was not there either. Take it off and hear with your ears.2. Bass is weak. While balancing for the bass side of the Pakhawaj, I had to take it off and hear it from the speakers. The bass got a little better when fed through SM-58 compared to SM-57.3. Mastering is out of the table with this one. If you want a more precise and responsive headphone over a larger frequency range, you will have to shell out for at least a 30X or up to 50X.

Great sound quality although I'm no audiophile, super light and comfortable. The ear cups are a standard universal fitment so you can swap them out for others that may be deeper or more comfortable. The battery life also lasts a surprisingly long time considering as I said how light they are. Bluetooth range is great as well. I use them as a tradesperson off and occasionally on the job, I take decent care of them but they have been squished and dropped several times and seem to hold up just fine.If they did eventually break I would without a doubt buy them again!

Lightweight, Good Sound, Inexpensive Wired Headphones

The sound is good and they are very lightweight. However, I have to get them in the right place on my head or I find them uncomfortable. They aren't as comfortable as my much more expensive wireless headphones but they sound as nice, although they don't have active noise blocking. I don't have a soundbar or speakers for my computer and these fill the bill. Since they're wired I don't have to turn them on or charge them. They're just what I wanted to replace my previous set which wore out and broke after a mere 25 years or so. I would recommend them to others and would buy them again.

Love it ... with one little irritant
7 September 2022

I love these headphones but there is one item which makes me give it a 4 star instead of a 5 star rating; if I could I would give it a 4 1/2 star rating. The problem that I have with it are the buttons to control the various features. These three button sit right next to each other and it is very difficult to distinguish them. The other issue is that the middle button is used to power on and power off (with a two second press) and a two second press is also used for some other function as well. Whoever designed this interface did not put enough thought into this design. So if you are considering these headphones just be aware of this issue. As I said from a performance standpoint I love them: rich full sound; they sit very comfortably and I can wear them for hours ... MoreI love these headphones but there is one item which makes me give it a 4 star instead of a 5 star rating; if I could I would give it a 4 1/2 star rating. Low cost perfection!
7 December 2022

Audio Technica has always set the bar on how a good set of lower cost headphones should sound, and this low cost foray into Bluetooth headphones definitely fits that scenario perfectly. It has no fancy noise cancellation, no wiz bang features at all really, but boy does it nail the basics just right. The lows mids and highs blend together so well that you'll find yourself looking for a reason to keep on listening to that old playlist you got bored of months ago. The quality is there with strong plastics and lots of adjust ments for even the biggest head as well. I've listened to them for up to 6 hours straight on a trip and never felt uncomfortable the entire time. Honestly, for the money you really can't ask for more. Highly recommended!

Most Comfortable in Price Range
15 December 2021

I tried to cheap out and buy some budget headphones from another site. There were just enough issues to annoy me. I should have started with these ATH-M20x headphones and I could have been done with my search.Comparing comfort, my first-purchase headphones were just big enough to almost fit over my ear, but required some assistance every time I put them back on which became annoying. The ATH-M20x is a perfect fit. I've owned some comfortable headphones over the years, but these take a commanding lead!Cable length: The ATH-M20x cable is long enough to plug in to my computer under the desk and allow me to still scoot over to my bookshelf about 4 feet away.As for audio quality, I'm not an expert but it sounds more natural than other headphones in this price ... MoreI tried to cheap out and buy some budget headphones from another site. It doesn't over pump the bass side of the spectrum.I'd would've given this 4.5 stars if possible. The only downside is the bass is a little dull for my preference, but at least it's not overbearing or hollow.

Performance per Dollar
17 October 2023

I purchased the ATH-M20x headphones for my 8-year-old grandson who is learning to play piano with a Casio CT-S1 61-key Portable Keyboard. My criteria were: keyboard compatible, rugged, inexpensive, comfortable, and satisfactory sound reproduction. It was important that the headphone impedance matched the keyboard output power. These headphones met all of my criteria and the sound reproduction is much better than I had expected. I am used to audiophile headphones from AKG and Sennheiser, nevertheless, I was impressed with the audio reproduction from the inexpensive ATH-M20x headphones. No, they do not sound better than my expensive headphones, but I got exactly what we needed and wanted, which is why I rated the ATH-M20x headphones with five stars.

Sounds great, but I ended up returning it
7 January 2023

First off, these headphones far exceeded my expectations. I really didn't expect too much given that these were Audio Technica's level entry model of ATH-M lineup and were in the low-hundred dollar range. However, once I put them on, I was surprised at how crisp and clear they were. Battery life is excellent and if you don't have time to give it a full charge, just 10 minutes is enough to hold you over for a while until you do.I ended up returning them because the headband doesn't have distinct clicks and are only held in place by friction, so I was constantly adjusting and readjusting them whenever I put them on. Even when I had them on, there would be times the cups would slide down just from me moving around. If I didn't readjust, the cups would fall too low ... MoreFirst off, these headphones far exceeded my expectations. If I didn't readjust, the cups would fall too low and rest on my lower jaw bone and it would get uncomfortable. That said, I was impressed enough with the quality of these that even though I returned them, I ended up purchasing the ATH-M50x (I didn't really need bluetooth). Not only do they address the headband issue of the ATH-M20xBT, but they sound even better. If you don't think the sliding headband is an issue, I think these are a great buy, especially if you can pick these up when on sale.

Update To My 1st Review
6 November 2022

You can read my first review to get my overall take on these headphones. I wanted to edit that review but it seems like on B&H Photo you can't edit your own review. They should fix that. But to the point: After quite a long time I have to say that I have gotten used to the proximity of the buttons and while I still think that Audio-Technica should consider re-enginerring them, I don't think now that they are as onerous as I felt during my first review. I have upped my rating to 5 stars: I am even more sold on the quality and sound of these headphones and one extra plus! I discovered that it is quite easy to pair them with the TV and with my iPhone at the same time. Very useful feature.

Very good for the price. Good it you're new to the audio industry.
14 July 2023

These are not meant for everyday listening where you want to feel the bass.these are not meant for gaming.thats not their purpose. So anyone who reads reviews stating that it's missing the low end compared to other products-true, but that good thing because they're primarily for audio recording and engineering.Keeping that in mind, the sound quality is quite good. The response is reasonably flat, and above as dry as it can get to my voice, in this price range. Isolation is not perfect but better than average,if this is your budget and you need record and mix the basics, they're very good in this price rang.
