When comparing replacement printers, I wanted something similar to my HP in terms of versatility, quality, speed and ink tank size. I looked at HP again but I had issues with connectivity with my prior HP unit, even when hard-wired to my desktop. This became a frustration. The Brother had good reviews and nice big ink tanks, which was important, and, they are easy to access and replace. Others that have refillable tanks suffer from inferior print quality in both text and photos, this unit does not have these issues. The only issue is that the print head requires realignment more frequently. I put this down to the fact it is really fast, which is a really nice feature. ... MoreThis Brother MFC-J5855DW INKVestment replaced an HP8610 printer that I had for 7 years. This is my second Brother printer, for home use. I have replaced a previous Brother that was used for 5+ years.Set up which in my experience can be tricky was very easily done with this printer. It responded quickly and correctly to my in-home WiFi and is now capable of producing documents from all connected devices; computer, phone, tablet.Color printing on plain paper works well and is nicely rendered. I have yet to try color printing on special print paper but given the performance with regular printer paper I believe it will be excellent.Regular black and white printing on regular documents is crisp with no blurring or smudging.Print speed is exceptional, even when printing double sided. This printer has been impressive and I'd highly recommend it to users ... MoreThis is my second Brother printer, for home use. I had been putting off getting a new printer to replace my old HP Inkjet that had served me well over the years. But the obvious had to be addressed so my research for a new printer began. Something happened to the printing world over the years where new technology needed to be produced with cheaper materials and an ever growing and demanding clientele needed to be offered products that includes everything including the kitchen sink. The need to feed the new printers of today with lots of ink in order to produce great looking photographs promotes a very high cost for ink cartridges. I definitely did not want to embark and participate in this game.Important to remember: there are basically 2 types of inkjet printers (and this can get quite confusing): Photo printers and Business printers. So the obvious approach is to look at new technology and products in a way that will answer our needs.Following the numerous comments and reviews, written and of the video persuasion, I narrowed my search to this Brother all-in-one printer because it seemed to offer everything I was looking for at a cost I was willing to invest in (yes, when we purchase a printer it is for years to come so it definitely is an investment..): The new technology Inkvestment Tank system appealed to me very much, fast and great quality printing, a good size paper tray, a sturdy well made product that didn’t feel cheap, a good scanner, a good warranty. This printer incorporates a fax which I do not see myself using anytime soon but is surely a great tool for any business.I followed the installation instructions which were quite easy to follow and got the printer working without a glitch. I initially intended to set up the printer using the ethernet connection to my desktop but figured I should try and live dangerously for a few moments and try the WiFi wireless setup instead. To my surprise and pleasure it was quite easy and I now operate the unit wireless and with a smile. The printer answers all of my concerns and more. It prints really fast and really well. Isn’t that what a printer is supposed to do?There’s only one issue that annoys me and that’s the scanning program. Very simple and easy to use but lacks a creative approach - It will not let you scan only a part/section of a document. This is very annoying for me but as luck would have it I was able to use my generic scanning program that I was using with my old HP. As soon as I opened it the program recognized the new Brother scanner and worked great - problem solved. So now that I’ve given you the long story, here’s the short version: This Brother is a great all-in-one printer that has exceeded all of my expectations. If you’re undecided sitting on a fence somewhere about what to buy then let me assure you that you will not regret choosing this unit.

Overall this is a great printer with a couple of (very) minor shortcomings. On the pro side you have;+ Ease of use+ Consumable (ink) usage and replacement cost+ Compatibility with Macs, PC's, phones, tablets, etc.+ Stable wireless connectivity+ Readable and well organized interface+ All the functions you would expect with a typical MFP (print, scan, duplex, fax)+ Good print speed (real world)+ Goof direct connectivity options (Bluetooth and USB)On the con side you have- Paper Capacity- ...not much, the color maybe? This is a solid workgroup printer for low to medium print volume. It's speedy, quiet, and capable (scan and send, duplex printing, etc.). It has a ton of connectivity options for Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and direct Bluetooth and USB. The setup can be completed in about 20 minutes (including registration). It's had to find anything to really complain about. With that I will nit-pick.I really like Brother printers. As a refugee from other brands in this space, I have been slowly swapping out those other 3 big brands with Brother printers. Easy to run, sit for months and work great. The interface is pretty easy to walk a non-technical (spouse, parent, remote co-worker) through. It would be nice to have a groupware support toll but that's not the endo fo the world. My issue with Brother printers, and this one in particular, is the paper capacity. When you are doing a larger print, or this is a more actively used printer, plan to be feeding it often. the 250 sheet tray is half a ream. *Half* a ream. Cm'on, give me a tray with at least 500 sheets (a full ream) for this class of printer. Now, to quickly pivot on that statement, I spend very little time clearing jams, or dealing with feed issues on this unit. Use good paper, pay attention to the curl, watch out for high humidity, and this tank will give you few (if any) paper problems. They do have a larger capacity version, so if you print a lot, or want to keep different types of paper at the ready (colors, checks, etc.) go with that. One other oddity, for mobile users Brother has two apps, and depending on the model you may need a differnt app. This one uses the Brother Mobile Connect (*not* the Brother IPrint&Scan). Again, not a deal-breaker, just odd.
Initially purchased Brother - MFC-J6555DW INKvestment Tank All-in-One Inkjet Printer, but it was too heavy and too big for the home office space. Returned and purchased the Brother - MFC-J5855DW INKvestment Tank All-in-One Inkjet Printer as the description indicated the dimensions were smaller. However, the specifications are inaccurate (Height 12 inches; Width 17.2 inches; Depth 17.2 inches). This may not be important to others but it depends on how much space you have. The actual specifications for the Width is 21.5 inches which prevents the closure of the office door. The cables are also in an awkward place under the scanner. Brother printers seem to be of exceptionally high quality. The last one I had worked for 11 years and then started printing only blank pages. I tried a Canon next but after only a month or 2, it stopped printing under Windows, though its scanner/copier function still worked. So, I went back with a Brother. I had wanted to buy Brother before but my local OD store didn't have any in stock. So, I ordered this unit from their web site. It's been a few months now and it still prints fine, so it must have been the previous Canon that was defective. Let's hope this one lasts another 11 years! The ink tanks also appear to be an improvement over the old ink cartridge system. With my old Brother, I had to replace the ink cartridges every few months. On this one, I haven't had to get new ink tanks yet.Another improvement over my old Brother is it would clean itself seemingly every day, which, to me, was just a means to waste ink and force you to buy ink cartridges more often than you needed to. This model appears to clean itself only when the power is cycled back on after it's been turned off.
This printer has some very strong features, but it has drawbacks as well. First, for an inkjet printer it does a very nice job of printing. Not quite laser quality, but it close enough for my purpose, which is to send out a weekly newsletter. I bought the printer because it could print on ledger paper (11x17). And it can do that, but one problem is that on extended runs it will pull through 3 to 5 sheets of paper. In doing so it prints a portion of the page on each sheet, essentially make all of the sheets useless. It does that regardless of care taken to fan the sheets of paper to prevent it. To solve that, I feed the sheets through the bottom tray one at a time. More labor intensive than I would prefer, but it doesn't waste paper. To solve that, I feed the sheets through the bottom tray one at a time. More labor intensive than I would prefer, but it doesn't waste paper. The main complaint it that while the company has hyped the ink tank concept, it failed to have enough ink supply on hand. There is a nationwide shortage of black ink as I write this. I would guess that is because of Brother's solid reputation (I have two laser printers that work great!) and the promises made about this machine. Why would a company roll out a machine and not have a sufficient supply of ink? The promise of a year's worth of ink is likely true if you don't use it very much, but for a small business that does a considerable amount of printing, that's not the case.
I can't believe that Consumer Reports recommended this printer. It has been nothing but trouble. At first, it was just software frustrations. The software that Brother ships with it is truly terrible and useless (you can only use it to print PDFs and photos, and the scanner software doesn't allow you to see a preview changing as you adjust the more advanced settings on the scan). When we would use Preview to scan, it would crash some times and was unreliable. You have to choose double-sided printing every single time, because for some reason that setting will not save in a custom preset. Then a few months after buying it, the double-sided printing slowed to a crawl. It always had to pause for drying time, but now everything slowed down by 10x. Printing a single page could take over a minute, so that made the printers' double-sided printing feature useless (so much for being an "Eco" printer).I called Brother and spent over an hour on the phone trying to figure out what could have caused the slow-down. We tried everything they could think of, so then they blamed the router. So we replaced the router. They said if the router didn't fix it was Apple's fault, so we called AppleCare. AppleCare said everything was fine on their end after graciously checking out a bunch of stuff. So then we bought a USB cable to plug it in directly and that didn't solve the problem. Actually, it introduced new problems as the success of connecting to the printer became unstable, clearly because of a software problem. The printer wastes color ink because for some reason it frequently defaults to having the "black-and-white" checkbox unchecked and uses colored ink to print grayscale. You have to check every time to make sure the black-and-white checkbox is checked unless you want to run through colored ink and also suffer slow print speeds.I wish I'd never bought this printer. Truly frustrating. Worst printer I've ever owned.
