I hit the limitations of this stove.Pros:-Cheap-Very small and lightweight-Reliable under light use-You can modulate the flameCons:-Wind is the enemy-Not fuel efficient-Cannot handle snow. I had my nozzle seize in the cold (5F).-You have to keep the nozzle very clean. Any debris like dirt/snow/soot will clog itIf you need a stove for heavy and continued use, this is not the product for you. Think, multi day, cold, dirty, snowy, windy. If you need a stove for lightweight short stints, this is the stove for you. Think weekend trips, moderate temps (above 25F), no digging through snow, low risk (if your stove breaks it’s not the end of the world).

Great little stove

I've had this stove for several years and it works extremely well. I built a little cook set with a MSR Titan Kettle, and everything fit together as if they were meant to go together. The only complaint i have is the wind deflector on the top of the burner. I'm constantly trying to lose it. It just doesn't want to stay on top of the burner, but I keep finding it. Great Stove overall! This is my go to stove for everything in the field (at least for three seasons).

Not a quality product/ poor customer service

I ran an original pocket rocket for approx 12 years. Great experience with it. I replaced the stove last fall with a pocket rocket 2 and after about 13 months, the stove is non-functional. The stove will not properly connect to a fuel canister. The grooves appear stripped. Contacted customer service with no response. Will no longer be a MSR customer or advocate.

Not as good as the old one
23 October 2022

This is not as good as the original Pocket Rocket. MSR blew it on this one. I have been using the original Pocket Rocket for years but in a moment weakness I bought the new one. The new one is 0.3 oz lighter with the case, 0.4 oz without the case. The original Pocket rocket has two seals on the gas canister, an O-ring and a rubber washer. The new one has only the little O-ring. The pot holders are more difficult to deploy since they have two pivots on each arm of the pot holder. On the old pocket rocket you can deploy the pot holders with one hand quickly. The 0.3 oz less weight does not seem enough to justify the the more trouble to set this stove up, and the one little O-ring seem risky. I would hate to wake up in the morning to find my fuel canister is empty ... MoreThis is not as good as the original Pocket Rocket. MSR blew it on this one. One of the Greatest Outdoor Stoves Ever Built

I've been backpacking and mountaineering since the 80s and MSR stoves is mine and my friends' top choice. The MSR PocketRocket is a superb, versatile stove that can be used from mountaineering, backpacking, camping and as an emergency back-up stove. It's very easy to use, very light, has a small packable size that you could put it inside your cookset or squeeze into a backpack. With a stable set-up, it can be used with larger cookset pots and pans using a MSR potholder. If used with a foldable aluminum wind screen it not only shields from wind but hastens boiling time of water and speeds up cooking. Canisters are also easy to mount and safe being threaded. Canisters for it are easy to find and come in different size to suit no. of intendend use.The MSR PocketRocket ... MoreI've been backpacking and mountaineering since the 80s and MSR stoves is mine and my friends' top choice. The MSR PocketRocket is a superb, versatile stove that can be used from mountaineering, backpacking, camping and as an emergency back-up stove. I even recommend it to other people to have for emergency as it's not that expensive.

Super efficient little stove - a definite must have!!
3 August 2022

Having used similar stoves in the past without great success I decided to 'invest' in a Jetboil Stove. Whilst these are super fast at boiling water, they're not designed for simmering, hence expect burnt food at the base of the cup, which is very awkward to remove. Reviews on the PR2 were encouraging, hence the purchase and I'm frankly delighted - it boils a brew almost as quickly as the JB but is equally efficient at heating and simmering in a range of pans (stainless/titanium/aluminium - all fine). Incredibly light and compact, it's replaced my JB for day-trips, overnights and long weekends, whether on foot, bike or car - would definitely recommend. Surprised that it didn't have an integral spark/piezo, but TBH if you're camping you'll have a lighter in the pack ... MoreHaving used similar stoves in the past without great success I decided to 'invest' in a Jetboil Stove. Surprised that it didn't have an integral spark/piezo, but TBH if you're camping you'll have a lighter in the pack anyway and even if that runs out of gas, the flint wheel will be sufficient. Alternatively use matches or even the fire-steel, remembering of course that the hairs on your fingers will always grow back, eventually....

This is the one to buy.
15 October 2023

This is the isobutane backpacking stove to buy. Pick up the msr piezo lighter for another $10 and it will nest right in the MSR stove container with this stove. Nice flame control and built solidly. Pay attention to how it folds to nest in the container as it has a particular fit to make it as compact as it is. I like stainless cookware (1 liter pot) so choose what you like and assemble your own system.

Works great and wouldn't consider any alternative
2 September 2022

This was recommended to me by an employee after we discussed what I had already, what I know, my prior experience backpacking, and my goals. I brought up most of that since I've been doing a ton of research already, so I basically and incidentally steered the conversation to this item. I'd suggest nothing else if you're going to be carrying your gear over any distance. This stove top is tiny, super-light, and works every time. You don't have to depend on a button that might break to light it, and the carrying space and weight is even ideal for you ultralighters out there. My only criticism is that it's sometimes difficult to fold up if you're not paying attention. You can easily prevent it from folding up correctly and not be able to put it back into its case.

Yeah, Tiny and Lightweight, but so Unstable
4 August 2023

It's a balancing act every time I use this to heat a cup of water for hot chocolate or coffee. With only three tiny supports for the cup that don't meet anywhere near the middle of the burner, it's very difficult to heat with confidence that a jostle of the table won't upend the cup. I've taken to finding a rock near or in my campsite and setting up on the rock so no one will accidentally jar the table. (It has happened). I'm looking for a different design, one that will be more stable.

The sound of an F14 fighter jet taking off from the deck of an aircraft carrier heralds the arrival of the best stove at any back country shelter. Its commanding jet engine blast drowns out the quiet conversation and lets everyone know that your boil times are indeed some of the fastest. Simple, powerful, inexpensive, the PocketRocket 2 is a very common sight out in the woods. I bought this in mid 2022, tested it on a section hike, and now I've now carried it on over 900 miles of an Appalachian Trail thru-hike. I really couldn't be happier with it. It's never let me down. It's loud, yes, but I love its unabashed presence. It's less than $50 on sale, and without a built-in lighter to get damp, its as simple as it gets. I don't carry a windscreen. This stove still gets it done in gusts and wind, with its burner divider allowing it to keep the separate sections lit. Sure I'll hold my hands round it now and again to block some strong gusts but most of the time just crank it up and the sheer strength of the flame holds out against the wind. I've been extremely happy with this stove and you will too. It was my first canister stove, and I'm so glad it was. See you on the trail!
