I am very pleased with the Canon 24 mm 2.8 wide angle lens. The photos are very sharp, and I particularly like the small size and weight of the lens. It will permanently replace the 18 - 55 mm, Canon zoom lens. I have a crop sensor camera, so the lens is equivalent to 38 mm. This is ideal for the type of photographs I take.Chas

A kit lens at 18mm does better, provided the lighting is adequate. For landscape images, the 24mm does well enough, but for that I don't really need a lens that fast, so I lean towards the 10-18mm ultra-wide zoom, despite its maximum aperture being 4.5.As most agree, cost-to-value on this lens is incredible, much like its older sister the 40mm pancake. I do feel like the 24mm has somehow managed to have the STM system improved over the 40. Both are good pancake lenses. Many talk about this being the best "walk-around" lens for a crop sensor body. I'll admit that it's easier to haul around, but it's only 80-something grams lighter than an 18-55mm kit lens, which could be better as a "walk-around" lens, aside from the wider aperture the 24mm offers. Personally, I've found myself leaving the 18-135 nano USM on my camera body most of the time, due to it's greater versatility.I really do love what the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens can do for me, but even more so, I appreciate what it makes me do. Being a fixed focal length, it forces me to see things a little differently, and certainly gets me to zoom with my feet. With 24mm not being particularly flattering to most humans, it makes me get a little more creative with how I shoot, but always gives me a good chance at getting great images with it.Overall, I'd stay this should be one of the first prime lens you purchase, along with the latest "nifty fifty".

Follow-up on Great Street/Documentary Photography Lens
2 January 2020

First I stand behind my Great Street/Documentary Photography Lens review. The more I use this lens the more I love it. I'm writing to inform any users of this lens of a little Lens Shade and Filter hack. The Canon EF-s 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens has a 52mm filter thread. I purchased the Canon ES-52 Lens Hood. With the wide angle of view of the 24mm lens the depth of the lens hood was minimal and also had a 52mm filter thread. Most all of my other Canon EF/EF-S lenses have a 58mm filter thread and I have many 58mm filters. Here's the hack. I purchased from B&H a senseiPRO BRASS 52mm to 58mm STEP-UP RING and an extra 58mm CANON LENS CAP. The end result: the senseiPRO BRASS 52mm to 58mm STEP-UP RING is slightly shallower than the CANON ES-52 Lens Hood and with my 58mm filters ... MoreFirst I stand behind my Great Street/Documentary Photography Lens review. I tested the lens/step-up ring/filter combination and found the same vignetting as lens with the CANON ES-52 Lens Hood. When you add the Lens Profile for Chromatic Abrasion and Vignetting any slight effect is solved. Now I love my Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens even more.

For its price point - around $130 or so - this lens is a must have!
22 June 2020

So glad I bought this lens! For the price, I really don't think there's anyhthing out there that can beat it. Nice, fast and bright f2.8 aperture really helps in low-light situations. The metal lens mount looks and feels very sturdy. Being an EF-S mount, it will only work properly on Canon's crop sensor cameras. Though it will physically mount on Canon's full-frame DSLRs like the 5D, you will see significant vignetting, since this lens does not project a large enough image circle to be able to fully cover the full-frame image sensor area. Stick to using it on crop sensor bodies, like the XXD series (40D, 77D, 80D, etc), 7D and the Rebel series, and you'll be just fine. When mounted to crop sensor bodies with Canon's 1.6x crop factor, you will end up with a field of view roughly equivalent to that of a 38.4 mm lens, which is a terrific, natural field of view that is perfect for general photography and especially good for street photography, which, I feel, is where this lens really shines, since it's small, light and unobtrusive. It keeps your kit small and less intimidating, so you can get those candid shots that you might miss with a larger camera/lens combo. Speaking of size, this lens, when mounted to the camera body, sticks out barely an inch, and weighs only a few ounces, so it's light and easy to carry all day. It is autofocus, and features Canon's STM autofocus motor, which is quick and very quiet. Great for video. The front element does not rotate when focusing, so you can use circular polarizing filters with no issues. It's recommended though, that you do not attach anything really large or heavy filters, since the STM motor -- while quick -- is not very strong and could potentially be damaged by too much resistance. There is a very thin manual focus ring too, should the user wish to make manual fine focus adjustments. There is no image stabilization, but I have not found that to be very necessary with fast, wide primes, so i personally do not find that a significant drawback. Images from this lens are sharp, clear and punchy, with good depth and contrast, and excellent color rendition. For its price point - around $130 - this is an excellent purchase, and very worthy of a place in your kit.

Great for landscapes
2 June 2024

I really enjoyed taking this lens on a recent hiking trip. It works really well for landscapes and group photos, and I don't have to back up to take photos, which is important in cliffside areas! It is very lightweight (especially compared to the zoom kit lens) and paired with a lens hood made for an excellent hiking setup. Overall definitely recommend this one and the equally affordable 50mm STM lens as good prime lenses for Canon! I'm new to photography and having a lot of fun using both of them on a Canon EOS Rebel T5i.

Sharp and fast normal-wide FOV lens
19 December 2022

I've had one of these for about 3 years so my review is coming from the perspective of a longish-term owner. Looking at its diminutive size and modest price you might not give this little lens a second look. That would be a mistake. Its 24 mm focal length on an APS-C sensor camera is equivalent to about 38 mm on a full frame camera. This is the approximate focal length of the human eye. Because of that, the perspective of images taken with this lens feel natural. Images taken with this lens are sharp and at f2.8 it's reasonably quick. Focus is fast, accurate, and almost silent. In my opinion, this is a must-have item for EF-S mount camera owners.

Tiny, light, and versatile!

I bought the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM in November of 2023 as a 35-40mm equivalent prime for Canon's APS-C crop and it's actually surprisingly pretty good! However, it doesn't sacrifice too much image quality even with it's small size. There is stronger vignetting around f/2.8, but stopping down to f/4-5.6 yields a lot brighter corners and more sharpness as well. The f/2.8 is extremely handy though when light is not as available, just keep in mind this is not the sharpest f-stop for this lens as is to be expected. You can get reasonable amounts of bokeh with this lens, although you have to be fairly close which can cause some distortion, so be careful when taking portraits. The lens is also able to focus fairly closely which is a big positive, however the STM focusing motor can be a bit noisy and slow, so keep that in mind for video applications. There is also no Image Stabilization, so I would recommend using this lens with a tripod if you are using it for video.Overall, it's hard to not recommend this lens considering how small and light it is. It would be perfect for landscapes, street photography, car photography, and more because of it's reasonably low minimum aperture and tiny, friendly size.

What A Bargain!
23 November 2023

after reading the mostly good reviews for this lens I finally purchased it and I really like it. A 35mm Canon EF lens would cost me a lot more than this lens costs. On a APS-C body this lens is actually a 38mm lens. I tested it at a music club that I shoot at, I set it to f4 was very happy with the results. Makes a great walking around lens too. At this price it is a heck of a bargain. Would recommend to anyone.
