First, I never thought I'd actually own this lens due to the combo of price and myself rarely shooting portraits. Despite having a R5 I didn't think I'd ever be able to justify the purchase even when absolutely everyone that uses it raves about it. Well.. The quick and simple: The RF 50mm f/1.2 USM L is an absolutely amazing lens that produces shots like no others, primarily thanks to its ability to absolutely decimate backgrounds, giving any subject shot at f/1.2 and almost 3D like appearance. It does have a a very few minor drawbacks (price, weight, chromatic aberration, "noisy" focus for filming), but if you have the means, this lens is 100% worth it, and then some!Longer take:As mentioned above (and by almost every reviewer), this lens is simply incredible. Although the lens doesn't have built in IS, I had no problem taking sharp handheld low light pics at 1/30 ISO 100-200; although this is probably thanks to the IS built into my R5 as well.Despite how glorious this lens is, there are a few drawbacks that people should be aware of. I don't think these are things that would detract people form purchasing this lens, but they are things that a potential buyer should be aware of, as it could possibly lead to a fair amount of disappointment if these issues are discovered post-purchase:Obviously, the entry price is quite high, there's no way around that fact. This wouldn't be as much of an issue if it weren't for two things: no IS and presence of chromatic aberration. No IS is probably primarily due to the sheer size of this lens (aka glass it has to move/use), so I can understand it not really having it built in. You would just think that for this price, Canon would find a way to incorporate it, seeing as they are able to do so for almost every other lens they currently have on the market (and I'm sure there will be an updated version eventually with it available). Again, this isn't too much of an issue, primarily thanks to f/1.2, which allows to shoot pretty easily in low light settings.What I have a harder time with is the amount of chromatic aberration. It isn't atrocious, but it is definitely still present. This may be a non-issue for some, but I'm not a fan at all, and it always jumps out at me. Granted, its generally easily revolved by removing it in post, but I was still surprised to see it there, especially when all of my other L series lenses (including two other primes) do not have this issue at all.The weight of this lens is something that should be taken into account as well. I'm an early 30s, athletic male, and even I get tired of carrying this lens after a few hours. This is definitely not your "grab and go" nifty-50. I have used it on different day trips since getting it, and although I can do so, my wrist/elbow aren't a huge fan by the end of the day. Again, not a dealbreaker for me personally, but something that people should be aware of if they plan to use this lens as, say; their primary travel lens.Finally, the focus is noticeably audible. Obviously, Canon wasn't able to use their nano USMs for such a large amount of glass, which isn't an actual issue until you need to film something. I am a photographer first and foremost, but I do enjoy shooting the occasional video. Although the video produced is as equally impressive as the photos, don't plan on using the sound from the footage, unless you want to hear the constant focusing "clunks" from the motor (alternative would be to use an external mic). Again, not a big issue for me at all, but it may be for others.All this said, this lens is phenomenal, despite its few drawbacks. The quality of the images it produces are worth the entry price alone, as it truly feels like a magical lens! It has now become my "constantly-on" lens, only to be swapped for lenses based on intended use (ie telephoto, macro, wide-angle, etc...).The entry price may hurt for a while, but it will quickly fade into a distant memory once you start capturing truly magical shots thanks to this lens. Do yourself a favor, and just buy it, and you too can partake in its glory! : )

As advertised it is an awesome portrait lens. The bokeh is fantastic and does separate the subject from the background. Best taking head or head and shoulder shots but great for so much more. At f1.2 it is a single person or with proper positioning a group lens. But, DOF is shallow (how much depends on distance of course). It is also great for photographing single objects. You need to take care at f1.2 to be sure to position the subject item so as not to have a confusing element included in the frame. So at f1.2 single person or single object. But don?t get stuck shooting at f1.2 always. That speed is ... I mostly shoot sports and events. My standard set up for events is 2 bodies with a 70-200 2.8 living on one, and switching between a 24-70 2.8 and a 14mm ii on the other. I rented this lens for a recent 5 day job for a new client. I thought I would use it sparingly to get some wow shots to impress them. I ended up putting my ef 70-200 2.8 away after the first day, and having this 85 live on one of my camera bodies. It's an absolutely excellent lens. I shot it at 1.2 essentially the entire time I used it and it rarely if ever missed focus. Paired with my r5 I just cropped in on ... If I was a only wedding/ event photographer this lens would absolutely be a must have.
I already have the EF 85 1.2 and for the longest time I thought the lens was superfluous. At a wedding however I was somewhat frustrated with the EF version. IN LOW LIGHT it had trouble finding the focus and seemed sluggish while the motor churned away. On Black Friday this year I took the plunge and got the RF. One shot and I was blown away. The speed, accuracy and sharpness was out of this world. Any doubts I had were swept away. One shot alone justified the price tag. I also picked up the 50 1.2 RF. Same story again. The EF can't compete with it. The 85 is the more magical of the two, but the 50 is probably more versatile. Both lenses are well worth every penny. The pictures speak for themselves. At a wedding however I was somewhat frustrated with the EF version. IN LOW LIGHT it had trouble finding the focus and seemed sluggish while the motor churned away. On Black Friday this year I took the plunge and got the RF. One shot and I was blown away. The speed, accuracy and sharpness was out of this world. Any doubts I had were swept away. One shot alone justified the price tag. I also picked up the 50 1.2 RF. Same story again. The EF can't compete with it. The 85 is the more magical of the two, but the 50 is probably more versatile. Both lenses are well worth every penny. The pictures speak for themselves. I felt like a precision sniper. Rarely did I miss a shot. The Bokeh was amazing. I got the regular 85 as I did t want to lose a stop of light for a more rounded out bokeh. Glad I did. Fast and beautiful.
I read positive reviews, watched a ton of videos, read blogs etc. before I purchased this lens. I bought the Canon R5, and tried to figure out the best lens to complement it in view of the array of EF lenses already in my possession. While there are quite a few RF lenses that are sharper than my EF lenses, the EFs are still good lenses and I did not want to make them redundant. So, what to buy? One lens missing from my arsenal was an 85 mm portrait lens for sharp images and maybe even landscapes. So, the RF 85 mm lens was a good choice in t his respect and looked likely to satisfy my craving for sharp images of people. Boy oh boy, is this lens sharp. I fell in love with it with my first images. Eyelashes are beautifully resolved, reflections in eyes are sharp and bright, and the verisimilitude of flesh tones just wonderful. Its advantages in image quality are so great that the disadvantages of cost and weight totally diminish in importance. Certainly, I am enjoying testing my focusing ability at F1.2, which is a challenge due to the inevitable small depth of field, but the background is so beautiful in such images that it is well worth the effort for the photograph. If you think you might like this lens, do not hesitate. It worth every penny, and is a total delight to use.

You absolutely do not need this if you are not shooting professionally, I want to emphasize this, Canon sells lots of glass I would recommend even enthusiasts or a novice to purchase such as the 24-70 F.2.8. you will get so much use from a lens like that, that the price is worth it. The RF 85mm 1.2 while possibly the best piece of glass ever made at 85mm by any lens producer has a price tag I just cannot recommend unless you are using it for weddings or need a dedicated portrait lens that you make a fair amount of money off of.2: it is noisy, the motors inside do make sound that can be heard, I have used this lens in a church a couple of times now, and I have to admit the focus motors make me feel uncomfortable at times.3: this is not an issue for me because size does not matter so long as you can handle it and typically you won't be shooting for long periods of time with a lens like this, or at least I don't. I generally take the shots that I planned with this one and it goes back in the bag for the remainder of time. But I have loaned it out twice now, and one of the photographers complained about it's size and weight. It was a woman who was on the smaller size, she said after shooting about an hour it was getting a bit cumbersome. She did note it was about the same as shooting with the EF version that she owns and uses more regularly. So while I can't imagine this being the deciding factor between an EF or RF purchase its something to consider nevertheless.
The RF 50mm f/1.2 lens is terrific. It renders bokeh beautifully and is a dream to shoot in low light. The 50mm focal length is versatile; I used it for both portraits and as a walk-around travel lens. This lens is sharp (but shallow) at f/1.2.I ordered this lens on a last-minute whim before leaving on a holiday trip. LensRentals got the lens to me earlier than expected. Packaging was terrific--the lens arrived in a hard plastic case inside a box. The return label made returning the lens easy. Thanks, LensRentals!
