I bought this for dyeing silk. I followed the instructions and it failed to attach to the fabric beyond a dull grey (which was only sitting on the surface, not dyeing it). I put my TWO YEAR OLD green iDye which has been made up all this time in a squeezy bottle in the same dyebath and it dyed the silk fine. I then put in two yarn mops (with mordant) to see if the very strong dye in the water would attach, and it didn't. Absolutely useless. The fabric and the yarn released all the blue "dye" when I rinsed them. I will find somewhere else to purchase iDye.

I used the Dylon black dye on a linen t-shirt that had got splashed with bleach and it worked really well. I used our stainless steel kitchen sink as the container and just cleaned it afterwards . I’ve washed it in the washing machine a few times since, with no colour fade, so I’d definitely recommend.

Colours VERY disappointing indeed. Used on new white fabric - colours looked great when wet but when dry the very vibrant "ocean blue" became a much less nice blue. The pink was ok. Plus, while Dunelm's price is good compared with others it still seems expensive for what it is.....

Not the light blue it's advertised as, it's darker. Sort it out dylon. Bought it to patch dye a bleach mark, it's marred the top because it's much darker then the description and picture.I'll contact them and complain.Dunelm at no fault whatsoever!

Good

The dye was easy to use. It worked well to darken my brightly coloured dress. FYI the black dye may not make your fabric completely black - my dress is still a pattern of dark blue and green but it's a good quality dye.

Good quality and easy to use.

I like to sometimes revitalise older items of clothing by changing the colour and also sometimes dye new things I've bought because I liked the style but maybe not the colour. These Dylon hand dyes are easy to use as long as you follow the instructions and remember to weigh the item before you begin and use the correct amount of dye and salt. As long as the garments are made of natural fibres, cotton, linen, wool, silk, viscose, they will take the dye, although the colour you get will be affected by what colour the garment is to begin with. It's also possible to mix dyes together to get exactly the colour you want. Mix a small amount to begin with and test the colour on a piece of kitchen towel or a white cotton fabric scrap.

Not sure why others are having problems
2 January 2023

I have used these Dylon 50g packs to hand dye over twenty items of cotton clothing, towelling bags and beach towels. I've never had a problem, so I think the issues experienced by others here might be more to do with their fabrics. The packaging does state that cotton, linen and viscose offer the best results, while silk (among other fabrics) will dye to a lighter shade. When rinsing, it does take a few washes to run clean, but it gets there in the end. For the price, I think these dyes are a fantastic option to breathe new life into items that might otherwise be thrown away, like sunscreen-stained beach towels. I'll keep buying and dyeing!

Quick and easy results

Very simple to use and less messy than I had been expecting - just be sure to use the right amount for the item. I used one packet to dye a thick cotton vest and the colour was very even, if a bit lighter than I had wanted. I’m now keen to try some of the other colours in the range!

I use these DYLON dyes in my front-loading washing machine. They dye successfully on fabrics that take dye. Easy to use––simply add 500g of salt to the dye in the machine drum with item(s) to be dyed and wash on 'Delicate'. These packet dyes have become harder to find in recent years and therefore more expensive. Spotlight has a reasonable range of colours, usually in stock, but is expensive. Big supermarkets sometimes carry Black at half the Spotlight price. Good idea to do research!

didn't work at all - do not recommend
8 November 2023

I used this to dye one of my tops for a concert and it didn't work at all! I followed the instructions carefully and didn't everything right and the colour rinsed out straight away! Waste of time and money and has left me disappointed with no other options :(
