The Remo coatings wear through and you have a clear spot in the head within a couple of weeks. I play these drums with the G12s nearly every day, and have had the heads on for seven months. Though there is a dirty spot in the center of them, all of the coating remains intact. The G12 is 12 mils thick as opposed to the G1, which is 10 mils thick. This slightly lowers the fundamental tone, but still gives the characteristics of a thin, single ply head. These heads sound low, full (they have great sustain - I've got Gauger RIMS on the mounted, and isolation feet on the floor, not muffling to get the most out of the sustain), warm, and "round" with just the right amount of attack for smaller venues. One thing I've learned over the years is that the heads used must be determined in large part by the sticks used. These heads require light sticks. 7As are about the upper limit for them, with Vic Firth 5AJs and Regal Tip Combos making them sound really sweet. If you use a 5A or larger you probably want to look at the G2s. If you use something with a "B" in it, you probably want to look at the Evans EC2s.Over the years, I have come to realize that you can overdrive a head with too-heavy-a-stick, much as you can overdrive a woofer with too-powerful-an-amp.If you need to keep the volume under control, and you use or are willing to switch to light sticks, these heads will make your drums sound amazing when you tune 'em to the sweet spot. The head/stick combo works for everything from Steely Dan to Dixieland, to Deep Purple (played at a volume that leaves your hearing intact).

I took the head and the included beater patch out and installed this baby. It took a little tuning to get it to sound just right (very loose resonant power stroke 3 with no sound hole) and just slight tension on this batter head. I used the smaller dampening ring and wow! Lively and Resonant
1 August 2018

The Resonant Glass heads are thin and respond much easier than the 10mil Genera Resonants or G1s. While providing a boost of brightness, these heads add sensitivity to your toms. The overall sustain is shorter than a G1 but it's not a muffled tone like the EC Resonants. These heads allow your drums to speak and then get out of the way. I'm currently playing them as resonant heads to Hydraulics which seems to give more life to the toms at lower dynamics. If you struggle with overtones and sustain from higher tuned resonant heads like G1s or Remo Ambassadors, try the Resonant Glass heads. The thinner weight lets you tune to a higher pitch with less mass resulting in a smoother and faster decay that still sounds natural.

Looking for that "THUD" from your bass drum? THIS delivers.
17 April 2018

I've tried dozens of techniques with dampening, rings, felt, and other manufacturer's gadgets trying to get this sound. Evans came up with a great system that utilizes a foam ring that sits under a strip along the edge and out of your way. The ring can be removed or replaced with a different sized ring so you can really dial in the sound you want.Used with an Evans sound control muffle velcroed to the inside floor of the bass drum, you'll get an amazing "thud" without killing the attack of the drum. Your bass drum is not a piece of furniture. Get the pillow out of there and set it up right. You can't go wrong with this.

This is THE ultimate bass drum batter head.
30 July 2015

Let me start off with qualifying myself with a little creditability in the drum gear industry. I've been drumming for 15 years, and have worked in drum sales for 6 years now. My point is this - I've gotten to evaluate, test, and install, just about every head imaginable. Also, I've received countless drummers' opinions and feedback on what they think the best bass drum batter head on the market is. About 90% of the time, they buy the EMAD Heavyweight. This is because they have bought it before, most likely because of a drum sales associate's recommendation, which is smart if you're dealing with the right salesperson. There are other heads that are similar in style, price, and made by other name brands, but none of them give you the control that the "External Muffling Adjustable Dampening" system does on the Evans Heavyhitter. The key word there is "Adjustable." No other company has that functionality and versatility, let alone thickened 2-ply layers of film. With that much control over a bass drum's resonance, you no longer have to sacrifice tone. Plus, just like all EMAD's by Evans, you are always supported with a thin foam insert and a thicker foam insert, which is where the term "Adjustable" comes in to play. Try both foam inserts out, and see which one fits your drum shell the best. Either way, this is THE ultimate bass drum head for all drummers.

Very surprised!!
4 September 2019

I've tried a ton of different heads on this kick throughout the years from all different brands. I change my kick head once a year in fear of breaking during a show. For the last 5 years I've been using a gmad with no problems. I'll admit that I was skeptical about this head. Being as thick as it is I didn't want that low volume choked out sound like the SK2. Put this on and wow!! Just as loud as a gmad but with a more focused punch, lots of low end while still getting the sound of the entire drum. No choking here! I'm using it with wood beaters and a remo falam patch. Front head is an eq3 with a kickport. I think I just found my new go to head. Sounds great!!

What a kick should sound like
30 May 2016

I've been relying on the Evans EMAD heads for probably a decade now. I used to always put a heavy pillow in my kick to muffle some of the resonance and mitigate the sustain but it would also dampen the attack and when recording with good gear the drawbacks came through very clearly. The first time I put one of these heads on my drum it was like, "oh, so THAT's how you get a kick drum to sound awesome." Very clean attack, with enough resonance and sustain that it sounds great live, and since you've got 3 options for dampening (none, the thin, or the thick one) you can play anything from jazz to metal to house with the same head.I play heavy, so the thicker one is worth it for me; the sound isn't affected too much. My only gripe I guess is that the foam things can be annoying to fit in the groove--you have to fuss with it for a few minutes. Also you have to figure out where to store the foam ring(s) you're not using where they won't get bent or otherwise damaged. But overall, these are the best kick heads I've ever used.

I put this EMAD on and all those other "Effects" are history - Not Needed. The Drum Head stays in tune, takes a beating, I play hard. And very responsive - I get doubles, triples, even quads without much effort - I know most of that is from the pedal, but the Drum Head helps a great deal as well. I only have one pedal BTW - Never got on the "Band-wagon" of the double pedal craze. I now have this head on both my DW Kits and won't use anything else. They are a bit pricey but considering the foam, cloth, pillows, all those cost money too - These heads last forever it seems. Very well made, very easy to tune and they stay in tune.

Worst Tom head experience I've ever had
14 November 2021

Maybe it was just me but I bought a brand new Tama birch/mahogany kit and I wanted to replace the stock g2's with fresh ones. I've never had a worse experience with a head before. The tuning was terrible. The sound was awful. I thought for a while my toms were possibly warped because I could never get them to tune well or sound good. Replaced them with Remo controlled sound clear and my goodness, night and day difference. They tuned so easy. The sound exploded off of them. Maybe it was bad heads I got but I will NEVER buy Evans Tom heads again. I still like some of the Evans snare batters. Giving 2 stars because the 16" sounded ok. But the 10" and 12" were the worst experience with Tom heads I've had.
