I was told a few years back that if you have cheap tom shells, use a double ply head (such as the G2 clear). If you have high end tom shells, use a good coated single ply head, such as the Evans G1 coated. After examining a number of drum sets, I am coming to the same conclusion. I was never fully happy with my tom drums (with G1 coated heads), but yesterday I came across a tuning that made them come alive. I used a drum dial indicator, and the top heads are now at 73 (on the loose side), and the bottom heads at 75. Wow, I finally have great sound. If the top heads are too tight (I had them set at 75), they sound tight with too much boing sound, but loosened up a bit, they are free to give resonant tone. I was about to put in an order for a set of G2 clears, but now ... MoreI was told a few years back that if you have cheap tom shells, use a double ply head (such as the G2 clear). I think the Evans G1 coated heads are the best I can come up with for my Jeff Kirsch custom drum set with 6 ply Keller VSS maple shells.

I have settled on the G1 for my snare batter head. I am a jazz drummer, play Noble & Cooley snares and have G1's on a piccolo and a 5x14 snare drum. These heads have a resilient, tactile feel and respond well when played with both sticks or brushes. The coating holds up well for brushes. The sound is warm with only a moderate ring. They can be tuned over a broad range of tension, but seem to work best in the middle range. The G1 would be recommended for light to moderate volume playing in an accoustic ensemble from jazz to classical. Evans heads are well made, consistent, and durable, holding their tuning very well. Highly recommended.

I enjoy playing drums but I am not very good. I my husband and I run PA hire and he is also a musician (bass player) and we have a studio at our house. My drums are always set up ready for the bands rehearsal so I didn't want to spend too much money on replacing heads. These were a great deal and they work well. The coating does come away but it takes a while and they sound good - no complaints

I play rock, and for live stuff I've always gravitated towards a two-ply head to get fat aggressive sounds, but I've seen a lot of info from pro recording engineers suggesting that the de facto set up in the studio is to use single-ply heads... I was skeptical but gave it a try, and the results were surprising... yes they sounded a little wimpier/rounder in the room, but tape playback came across with that classic rich/full/singing recorded tom sound that I've been chasing for years. I'm keeping 2-plys on my live/rehearsal kits, but for my recording set I think I'm going to run with these... the proof is in pudding!
Sound:Great, clear tone and rich texture. Full of overtones and life. Great sensitivity for brush work or dynamic playing.Features:It's a head. It comes with a head, it comes in a box.Ease of Use:Again, it's a head. Really easy to tune.Quality:I've never had a dud Evans head. I have with Remo.Value:Often slightly higher priced than Remos, but worth it for the consistency.Manufacturer Support:No major problems dealing with them, fairly easy to get a hold of, they replaced a shredded foam ring from an EMAD for me for free. The Wow Factor:No glitter, no lights, no neon.. but then again, it's a head, not a stripper.Overall:I replace them every few weeks or before a series of gigs. Standard.
Great as a snare hear. Sounds very similar to a Remo Ambassador. Great sound! Would be 5 stars but if you have nice, bright, shiny cymbals do not buy these... The coating comes off and leaves marks on the cymbals.. If you don't have great cymbals go ahead and buy; nice head and sounds great! But if you have very nice cymbals you should probably stick to the Ambassadors or something else... I have used 4 and all have had this same problem with the marks on cymbals
Great sounding snare! Sounds very similar to a demo ambassador! Great range with tuning from high's to low's. I use these on my snare head's and they're great heads! The only thing is the coating. If you have super nice, shiny cymbals I would recommend using the clear G1's. The coating comes off easily and leaves marks on your sticks, transferring them to the cymbal and leaving marks on the cymbal. Great head, but I would recommend the clear if you have nice cymbals.
I have tried many types/styles of heads in my 50+ years of drumming. These are by far the best I've used! They have response, depth, tone everything you want in a drumhead. If you breathe on these heads they respond but if you dig into them they're still there supporting your efforts and responding with the sound you want. Heads or shells are only part of the sound you make. I want a head that gives me back what i put into it. Nothing more, nothing less. These are it for most styles other than the heavier rock and metal. They adapt to many types of music. Glad I found them and you will be too if you're looking for a drum head to help "show your voice"!
I've been using Evans heads for many years now and love them. I've also used Sam Ash for several orders and had no issues, until now. This particular Evans 8" batter head was streaked/smeared. It was just a hair shy of being "scored" w/ some of the white coating almost removed. I'm not sure how it got into this shape. Possibly during shipping by the courier? Or maybe at Evans (hopefully not) or at Sam Ash while packing/shipping. The head is still functional, it is just not aesthetically pleasing.
I'm a pretty devoted Remo guy, but I bought half a dozen of the Evans just because they were on sale (the intention being of putting them on snares I don't really use anymore). However, after putting them on the first drum, I put them on others as well. From drum-to-drum, they sounded consistent and fantastic. The drums were: 5.5" Yamaha Manu Katche (die-cast hoops), 7" OCDP Hybrid (triple-flanged hoops), and an 8" Yamaha Recording Custom (with Yamaha wood hoops). I give those details for this reason: Oftentimes, the fit of the wood hoops aren't as snug as those of metal hoops, but the new 360 design really worked on that particular drum, and it's never sounded better. As such, I'm curious to try these heads out on my toms with an expectation of a good sound.
