Not too just dunk on the watch, but it fell past my already pretty low expectations. Let's talk about the pros first and the reason I bought this watch: it's aesthetics. I bought this watch because I don't particularly like how most smart watches currentllooks like smart phones on your wrist, but this watch looks like a proper watch. The battery life was okay and would only really last a day sometimes less if you felt like using heavy apps on it like Google maps or playing music through the speaker, but overall I'd charge it in the evening/while I was showering and getting ready for work and it'd be at 100% when I was set to sleep or head out. Now for the cons, the first I had was the watch set up. Both watches I owned for some reason took well over an hour to for the initial set up of the watch. It's not like the watch was updated the whole time but required me to restart the set up processes multiple times. I thought I was just stupid till my first watch died and it took me another hour to finish the set up. Second con and the reason I've owned 2 watches is that the charger is terrible. This watch charging dock is super finicky, it would stop charging pretty frequently until the watch just stopped charging all together. This has occured twice. Now I thought the charger cable was broken but after buying a new one it still wasn't charging and when my second watch experienced the same issue I concluded the manufacturer had poor QC.If this watch just had poor connectivity and mid battery life I might recommend this watch to people looking for a sleek looking alternative smart watch but this watch is just bad.

Absolutely would buy again.

I love the watch. I use a lot of the features regularly. The timer is a great way to remind that the laundry cycle has finished or to flip the steaks. The flashlight on the bottom button allows me to see my way for that regular middle of the night walk. I like the easy access to apps such as weather using tiles. I watched a you tube to get started but most of it is learned through using. Having a Gen 5 helps a lot, but starting from scratch requires some patience. I found it worth the effort.

Improvement on the Gen 5
31 January 2022

I had reviewed the Gen 5 on the insiders and so came into this review with expectations set higher, hoping for improvements, particularly when it came to notifications, how useful they are and interactivity. The Gen 6 does not disappoint in this regard. I found notifications to be really easy to read and interact with, and the timing was also much improved than before - Google's efforts on the Wear OS front are definitely paying off. I found the suggested responses to WhatsApp messages were really spot on and actioning them was a breeze. The other key area I used a lot was to quickly manage / interact with notifications with One-Time-Passwords or apps that need me to press Yes / Approve (or otherwise) when carrying out actions that need 2 Factor Authentication. The other key area I used a lot was to quickly manage / interact with notifications with One-Time-Passwords or apps that need me to press Yes / Approve (or otherwise) when carrying out actions that need 2 Factor Authentication. In the past, this was impossible with Wear OS but now it is so straightforward! Now to one area wherein I was quite disappointed - activity tracking! I know the Fossil and brand isn't strictly supposed to be outdoorsy or anything like that, rather it is a trendy, like high-end smart-casual... still, I didn't expect such poor performance. My walks, jogs and cycling were not detected accurately at all - neither at the start nor the proper duration. Once I even wore two watches - the Gen 6 and another from a competing brand on the other wrist, just to ensure that I wasn't imagining I'd exercised longer than the Fossil was telling me, and this proved that the Gen 6 was lacking. I don't know if it is an issue with the physical sensors or the software, but if you are looking for reliable activity tracking, this isn't the watch for you.In pretty much every other way, especially when it comes to pairing your wrist accessory with going-out clothes, this is a winner. Fossil really, really know how to make quality gear when it comes to the aesthetics... the heft of the band, the way it sat on my wrist, it was all first class. So if you're not bothered about activity tracking, then for pretty much every other use-case I can think of, this is a really compelling product.

Nice looking, but not worth it

I really like the aesthetics of the watch, and the functionality, when it works. The watch was awesome when I could get it to charge and work. Unfortunately the charging portion of the watch, battery life, and getting it to actually stay on is what plagues this watch from being usable.I have had my watch for a year and a half, and within that year and a half, finding a good charging position, feels like I am becoming a profession safe cracker. I have to keep turning, nudging, and praying it charges.Majority of the time when charging, it is plagued with over heating. When I take it off the charger, it is hot to the touch and I have to power it off to let it cool down. Their smart watch with the funky charging prongs, horrible battery, horrible heating issue, and now it doesn't turn on after being on the charger. I have to warn others that this watch is a pass. If you are looking for a smart watch, do not go with this one. You will feel the remorse, like I have in time. Sadly, the money spent on it, I really feel the remorse.

There are burn marks on it, and no longer chargers the watch. incredibly unsafe hazard that any company that cares about their products and customers would want to know about right?I again, reached out to fossil, in the hope of it being under warranty or even purchasing a new charger. It has been almost 2 weeks and I havent heard anything.small issues can happen with these products, but the awful customer service means i will no longer buy Fossil products, and am trying to sell this watch second hand.

Ruining their own product

I'll start by saying, I've had a fossil smart watch since gen-2 came out and have been upgrading with every second generation. I've loved the way they look, feel and function. But ever since Fossil changed over from the Google Wear OS, to their own Fossil Smartwatch app, there has been nothing but problems. Connectivity is a joke, I'm reconnecting my watch to my phone several times per day. Sometimes the screen with come up for me to snooze or turn off the alarm, but rarely. Most of the time, I have to navigate my way through to get it to turn off. Excellent thing to do when it goes off while driving. I keep my sound turned off, as the pitch of the notification bell is uncomfortable, but at random points in time, the notification bell will turn itself on to remind me just how awful that sound is. And battery life is a complete wild card. Some days I'll get a full 15+ hours out of it. Other days I'll be about 4. This will be the last Fossil Smartwatch I buy. I'm no longer going to pay for the absolute frustration and anger this causes. Whatever their update was to the OS, it completely ruined the product. Save your money. Buy any other smartwatch, or stick with fossil's regular fashion watches.

Slick and stylish mid range smart watch

Overall I was impressed with the Fossil FTW4059. Out of the box, it looks like a modern stylish dress watch that would fit in on a night out, your suit in the office and in your joggers by the TV. It's a bit fiddly to resize the strap but take it to a watch shop if you're unsure and they would have it done in no time. Pairing the watch to an android phone is quick and simple with the built-in software taking over most of the data exchange. Once you're paired, you're ready to go...almost. It was a bit annoying that once you have given access to the watch to take on your Google account, you have to then authorise every smart app individually, but once you're done, it's done. It was a bit annoying that once you have given access to the watch to take on your Google account, you have to then authorise every smart app individually, but once you're done, it's done. My main function for this watch was to keep up to date with notifications, use it in the gym and as a GPay extension. The audible chime and accompanying buzz on your wrist are hard to ignore and I'm pretty sure that you would never miss any updates. As an activity tracker, it all depends on the app that you use but the metrics and data that it collects such as your HR and O2 levels seemed pretty consistent across the various apps that need to get your vitals. It handily compiles all your data and lets you see these in charts, graphs and is available for more interrogation on your phone. As an extension to GPay, this watch is great. We went from Chip and Pin, to Contactless, to Phone and now to watch...super convenient; dangerously convenient. The battery life will easily make it through one day of moderate use (regular notifications, 1hr gym, a few GPay transactions and general procrastination) and I get the sense that with tinkering, you could make this last even longer. I was able to charge my watch fully within 90 mins whilst sitting at my desk and this would be topped up the next day. The charge speed is really impressive and you can easily get 60% in the time it takes to get ready to go out.I would like to see the watch be able to be flipped so that the face is the right way with the buttons and scroll wheel on the other side. The watch was also very sluggish when rebooted or left unworn overnight and it's almost as if the watch needs to come around in a morning but after that I found the watch to be fairly fast and responsive.Overall I like this watch and I think it makes a good mid-range starter point if you like to have a good looking watch with good functionality. It is definitely worth the money and built well.

I received this watch to write an honest an unbiased review. The watch itself looks very appealing in the image and did not disappoint when delivered. the metal strap and case are good quality and add a good weight to the watch so you know you have one on. What impresses me most with the watch is the overall quality with the metal strap and it’s clasp. The screen also provides good resolution and downloadable screens allow you to customise the face. The only concern I have found is the ability to change font size as being slightly older without glasses reading some content is difficult. The notifications from phone have so far all worked well and I have the usual apps installed for social media and a number of smart security products all of which have notifications that display on the screen. The charger is a standard magnetic disc that locates securely on the back and doesn’t fall off easily like some versions from other manufacturers I have experienced. Buttons have standard functions and touch screen is accurate and supports swipe features. The pulse meter seems to match my other smartwatch so would assume is accurate and oxygen monitor seems to work but obviously couldn’t guarantee accuracy. So this watch in my opinion does everything competitors watches do and has the quality look, feel and weight of a more traditional watch but with the added advantage of giving all the smart features such as physical tracking, notifications from phone, take calls from watch and makes calls. The final question is value for money at £299 I would say this is the upper limit but still fair but hopefully with sales if you can pick it up for less then you are getting a good deal.

The logical step
19 January 2022

Owning the Fossil Carlyle HR, Gen 5, I expected to have a good understanding of what I was going to be receiving, and I have to say I was neither disappointed or astounded. The Gen 6 is a step up from the previous generation, but it is not a step change. The processing time of app, and screen changes is reduced; meaning reactivity is increased and makes the use experience much better.Battery life is increased also, with a solid 20-30% battery remaining at the end of the day, whereas my Gen 5 would require recharging in the evening or would hobble to the end of the day at 10% with reduced capability. The stainless steel bracelet is well made, and the clasp is solid. Having also ordered the rubber replacement strap it was interesting to feel the weight difference and realise that the watch body is light and makes a great companion for sport.UPDATE: After further usage battery life continues to surprise me with plenty of battery left into the night. I think I was seeing increased usage the first few weeks due to wanting to play with it and see what's new.I have had a few disconnections, and freezes which is a little disappointing. However, there has been nothing a reboot hasn't resolved and I haven't fully switched it off since owning it so some little glitches are to be expected. Finally, a few people have noticed and commented on this new design and have been shocked that it is a smart watch. Which is exactly why I buy the Fossil devices, I like the unassuming design of them. On the design I was a bit concerned at first it would look a little large on my wrist but it's been fine.
