A good solid lens

I've only had this lens out a couple of times, but so far I like it. It's sharp, even at 2.8, and focuses quickly and quietly. This is a well made lens, solid as a tank, and zooms in and out smoothly. Being an f2.8 allows for semi-low light situations, but it really doesn't do well indoors because it requires cranking the ISO up, which adds noise. I removed the tripod collar to make it more portable and because I don't think that I'll ever use it with a tripod. It's a heavy lens, but I like the solid feel of it. I may adjust my rating after I use it a bit more, but so far I like it and plan to use it for photographing landscapes, outdoor sports like tennis and pickleball, and outdoor portraits.

I have been looking for this lens for quite some time now for a good price. I understand that Fuji need to charge for the development, but it will also be out of reach for most amateurs like me. And I think we are more amateurs than professionals in the world. So I looked for a used one for half the price and found one. It is equally good as a new one. If you do not mind some minor scratches the choice is bigger than grade A of course. Mine was very nice, but you can see its been used. Still the best lens I own today, I love it!

This lens is one of my favorites because it just gets the shot whether the action is fast or slow. Being a bigger and heavier lens, however, I recommend using it with a battery grip (that greatly improved comfort using it on my XT3).Optically this lens is razor sharp edge to edge with colors that pop and excellent subject separation throughout the range. It definitely has a sort of look to it that is hard to put my finger on, but I like it a lot. I find image quality peaks at about f/3.6-f/16 or so. Wide open at f/2.8 it is just a touch (and I do mean touch) softer with perhaps a little less contrast. Bokeh is excellent, but I have seen better sunstars. When this thing flares it flares in a pretty epic way. But in my case I've found it pleasing and tried to incorporate it into compositions. MFD is a lengthy three feet or so, typical for lenses like this and something I'd always prefer to be shorter. Hence it is a tad more constraining to use the lens indoors, though I do so a lot. Magnification is low, but this lens still pulls it off well when you zoom in all the way and add a crop - its that sharp.AF is excellent - other than the soft whir of the motors, or thunk when you switch it off, it is smoking fast. Even in poor light, I find this lens to be quick and virtually hunt proof - it just works. If only they were all like this.OIS is excellent - I've nailed focus at 1/15th all the way out to 140mm. OIS generally doesn't interfere with my action shots, but from time to time I do shut it off just to eliminate that possibility. It would be nice if it had a panning setting.Handling and feel of the lens is great - the aperture ring has strong, positive clicks, and the zoom ring is comfortable and fast. The manual focus ring is, IMO, too slow - even when I really rip on it, it seems to take its sweet time (probably to aid precision, however). I love the metal build, but can note that it can get ripping hot in the summer, and freezing cold in the winter. Hence the broad rubber zoom ring is pretty important here.Tripod collar is easy to drop into portrait mode, and makes a useful hand grip. But it is a tad annoying to take on/off as it is a tight space - not to mention you better insure they aren't loose each time to use the lens. Lens hood on mine is wiggly, and never seated itself as easily as it should have - I eventually cross threaded mine in the moment, probably ruining it though it still works. It's a poor fit, in other words, not becoming of a $1,600 lens.Other than that the 75-214mm-ish range of this lens combined with its fantastic image quality and overall performance makes it a very rewarding to use despite its size, weight, or cost. On more than one occasion this has been my one lens choice for landscape, portrait, and action. Its high versatility and performance makes it in many ways a far better value than some other Fuji lenses (cough, prime lenses, cough).

Exceeded My Expectations
31 August 2021

I purchased the Fuji 55-200 several years ago and have always been very happy with its performance. It's compact, light, has great image quality, and makes for an affordable easy-to-carry tele-zoom for travel and general use.Recently I decided to try backyard bird photography and the 55-200 did ok, but lacked reach and can't be used with a teleconverter. I tried the 100-400 but found it had some autofocus issues when moving from faraway subjects to closer subjects. The 70-300 has been difficult to find, so I decided to try the 50-140.By itself, it doesn't solve the reach problem - in fact, I'm technically losing on the long end - but the difference in reach between these two lenses is smaller than the numbers would suggest.Being able to shoot at f/2.8 at even ... MoreI purchased the Fuji 55-200 several years ago and have always been very happy with its performance. Even though I may have to crop a bit more with the 50-140, the sharpness I've gained from being able to use a faster shutter speed combined with the noticeably better OIS has given me sharper, clearer, more usable images. The AF is also noticeably faster and very, very accurate. The penalties compared to the 55-200 are of course cost, weight, and size, but compared to the cost and weight of a full-frame 70-200 f/2.8 lens, it's still manageable and affordable, and it balances very well on my X-H1 with the grip.I didn't expect to see much of a difference based on the numbers and most reviews I've seen as the 55-200 really is an outstanding lens, but in the real world, the 50-140 is proving to be a significant step up.I'm looking forward to seeing how it pairs with the 1.4x TC soon.

First time renter had a great experience
13 November 2021

Being that this was my very first time renting a lens, I was a bit concerned with the lens being damaged while in transit. When the lens arrived, those thoughts quickly dissipated as the lens was carefully packed inside a padded lens sleeve which, in turn, was placed in a very sturdy plastic box with foam core. The lens itself (a Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR) was in great cosmetic and mechanical shape. It came with it's hood and a UV filter to protect the front element. The lens worked flawlessly and I am very happy with the images I captured. One area that could use improvement is immediately after submitting an order as there is no clear indication that the order went though successfully. Or, it wasn't clear to me. What I did to verify it was that I went into my account's order history and I found it listed there. Shortly thereafter, I received an email confirming it. However, I think it would be a nice touch to display a confirmation immediately after submiting the order.Aside from that, the rental process was easy and quick. I received emails with order status updates. I had the option to have the lens delivered to a local FedEx shipping site and it arrived on schedule. The return instructions were simple and easy to follow and I appreciate the packaging tape they included -nice touch!I am very pleased with this experience and I will certainly return to Lensrentals next time I need a specialty lens.

Great lens! Very well packaged
14 May 2021

Great lens! I took great portraits with it for my daughter's virtual college graduation. The lens was packaged well in a very sturdy case. The barrel and lens hood had some oily marks (?). I'm not 100% sure what it is but perhaps from previous renters who have handled the lens with oily fingers. The front and rear elements were very clean. The zoom and focus rings were very smooth. They were no mechanical issues. I can very slightly hear the OIS motor even when I turned the OIS switch to the off position. I've read some reviews on this that is normal for this lens. It's not loud and only audible when in very quiet environments. I was using it with my X-T4 so I'm not sure if it has something to do with that. I like this lens
8 August 2021

This review is based on a single, but full day of shooting in natural light conditions. The first thing I noticed is the heft of the lens; it was heavier than I thought it would be, which is a good thing because so much of Fuji equipment tends to be more plastic feeling and perhaps not as durable as some of the Canon or Nikon equipment I've used over the years. I felt like the quality of the images was not quite as good as those I shot on the same day as a 70 to 200mm Canon lens with a Canon 5D, but the compactness of the lens and the XPro2 body make it an attractive package, especially when traveling and not wanting to lug heavy equipment. It gave up ground in lower-light situations, but bright conditions it was ideal. Not the best lens on the market, but for the price I felt it was well worth it.

Outstanding Sharpness - Optical Perfection
5 December 2022

This lens is amazing. I own the Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 IS II, and this is just as good, cheaper, lighter and with an outstandingly useful tripod foot/collar. I have all the fast fuji glass (90/f2; 60/f2.4; 56/f1.4; 35/f1.4; 23/f1.4; 16/f1.4 and 18/f1.4), so I know what the best images from Fuji kit look like. This is on a par with the best of them (it shouldn't be given that its a zoom). It's a useful portrait and landscape lens. With my Canon 500D close up lens/dioptre, it's a great macro lens and what I really like about it is the clarity without the need for fill flash. Professionally, I've shot weddings with the Canon lens, and halfway through, the weight really cripples your arm. The Fuji 50-140 feels like a featherweight by comparison and gives images that are just as pleasing. The smaller XT series cameras are the perfect match, and really help keep the weight down. On it's own, close focus is nothing special, but sharpness, speed, stabilisation, Weather resistance are stunning characteristics that make this special. Ignore what people say about this being heavy. It is not at all heavy compared to the competition, and balances well on XT bodies. You don't need a grip either as the tripod foot makes holding it very manageable.Build quality is outstanding. I can imagine it will really take what nature and my clumsiness throw at it.B&H service was amazing as always - I had it within a week, and I live in Adelaide, Australia, so full marks for service.Bottom line - buy this lens, you won't regret it. I have just bought the Fuji X-T5, so stabilisation on that body will be amazing, but the lens is also capable of stellar images on older bodies such as the X-T2 and X-T3, which are still competitive devices a hairs breadth beneath the current state-of-the -art.

The LENSERENTALS company is first
6 March 2023

The LENSERENTALS company is first class. The lens I received looked like it was brand new. Functioned perfectly. I rented the lens because I was not sure I wanted to buy the Fuji 50-140 and it is an expensive lens. I used the lens in a variety of shooting situations. Although I did decide not to buy the lens after all, renting turned out to be an important very low-cost decision maker without having to buy the lens and end up with buyer's remorse!

This is one of those lenses that you just have to have
13 September 2021

I had rented this lens a couple of years ago along with some other Fuji gear when I was getting ready to switch manufactures and to mirrorless. I could not believe how sharp the images were and the colors were amazing. The edge to edge sharpness even at close to wide open aperture so was great. Its a hearty beast of a lens but paired with my Fujifilm XT-4, its producing some spectacular images. New, they are pricy but still affordable in my opinion but getting one used in great condition like I did is the best way to purchase one as you can get a great lenses for a little bit less and thats icing on the cake.
