A good general purpose GPS

The product is quiet good. The search function is helpful. Gets the gps location fast. Displaying current time is a good feature. Updating is easy. Although, I am not sure how often do I get update. The interface however could be improved. For example, when I touched the screen during the navigation it just zoom in. I wish there was a cancel navigation button or change navigation button. Anyway, the most problematic issue for me was the charging cable. It comes with a car charger. If you use the car charger, then it is not possible to charge your phone anymore from the cigerette socket directly. You need to spend extra money to have a USB charging cable, or Dual cigerette charge holder which is pretty bulky. Therefore, I returned it. Decided to try something different.

A solid but very basic GPS Unit

Like most people, since everyone has a smartphone in their pocket I was wondering if stand along GPS units were antiquated and redundant. If this sounds like something you need, then this GPS will suit your needs. Your should know that the Garmin Drive 51LM is a solid but very basic GPS unit, with no bells and no whistles. The lag/ delay in pressed buttons was frustrating and tough to get used to. Also, perhaps not a common experience, but this GPS could not find 2 locations that I searched in moderately populated areas (note, my smartphone didn't have this problem for these locations). Conversely, the turn notifications and visuals on the larger screen were good.Overall, for the reasons stated above, if you need GPS mapping for a specific purpose (i.e.: long journey, cross border travel, limited data plan, etc.), then this very basic GPS will do the trick. Personally, this Garmin Drive 51LM will not replace the more often used smartphone app that I use, however it will be used on longer trips. However, I would opt for an upgraded unit that includes the now commonplace features of voice command and Bluetooth.

Again I haven't looked for it yet so it may be there. The sort of compensator for this is that you have an arrival time. The 2) thing is that my unit appears not to have Bluetooth, which it is supposed to have. This is needed to pair with your smartphone and the Garmin Smartphone app for live traffic updates, parking and a few other features.....so I'm not getting the full benefit of the device at the minute. I have spoken to Garmin UK and they sent me a link to "reset" my device which was actually just a "Do this" page on their website rather than a operating system update as I was expecting. I will have to pop into Halfords and see if another unit has the Bluetooth capability and that this is just a rogue device. There is an accessory that negates the need for the App, a Garmin GMT 36 power/traffic receiver but at £55 it's expensive and feedback on it's performance seems to vary, the reviews on this item were mainly American and I couldn't find any UK reviewsI would recommend this Sat Nav, but check it has all the features working and that you need/like before purchasing.Sorry about the nickname, mine was already taken....lol

Don’t waste your time with this product or Tom Toms which have poor quality batteries and will last nor more than a year and have outdated maps. Save yourself some money and time and download a free Sat Nav on your phone. I have a dash cam and Google home that I am not bothering to open and will be taking back tonight as well.

Great GPS unit!!!
22 October 2021

i bought this GPS, because an older one i had paid big bucks for bit the dust. i figured it would be basic, and not very good for $100. i was very pleasantly surprised!! i was in the beginning stages of a 6,000 mile cross country road trip i needed something to find hotels i had booked, places i intended to visit. It worked flawlessly out of the box!! better than my expensive old one!! it only failed me once, and it was a hotel that was just built. I'm sure if i had been able to update it beforehand it would have found that too!! I feel like the people who didn't like this GPS are expecting way too much from the device!! It's a $99 GPS!!!! But works so much better than the price lets on!! I highly recommend it, and would buy it again!! Great Unit - Don't Believe the Negative Reviews
8 June 2018

Several negative reviews of this product are downright false. I read the reviews and was concerned, but figured I could return the unit if they were really true, but they were not. I have worked with this unit for several weeks and am extremely happy with it, especially considering that I bought it to replace my Ram 1500 in-car GPS that used the same software, but failed for hardware reasons. Ram wants thousands to replace it and wants $149 just to update the maps. This unit functions exactly the same as my Ram navigation unit for less than a map update in the vehicle system costs, plus it comes with free lifetime map updates. Here are the false negative review claims debunked:(1) The unit DOES automatically recalculate routes when you drive down a different road ... MoreSeveral negative reviews of this product are downright false. Ram wants thousands to replace it and wants $149 just to update the maps. This unit functions exactly the same as my Ram navigation unit for less than a map update in the vehicle system costs, plus it comes with free lifetime map updates. Here are the false negative review claims debunked:(1) The unit DOES automatically recalculate routes when you drive down a different road than on the route shown. Reviews that say it does not recalculate are false and this unit works seamlessly to guide you through detours on your route.(2) This unit DOES NOT automatically shut off when power is disconnected. When the power is disconnected, it tells you it will shut down in 15 seconds unless you tap the screen button to keep it on. If you do keep it on, it will stay active for over an hour (personally tested this).(3) The unite DOES NOT need to be reprogrammed every time it shuts off. I have tested this repeatedly, putting in a route, partially driving that route, then powering off the unit. When the unit powers back up, the route comes back up as well along with all of your personal settings (like the "north-up" map view I prefer to use.(4) Updating software and maps DOES NOT take hours. Mine went through the full process when I purchased it in 28 minutes total.(5) The mounting hardware IS very sturdy. Despite reviews that say otherwise, the mount is so secure that you really have to work to remove it.(6) The power cable IS very secure. The cable clicks in and remains seated despite some light pulling and tugging. It won't "fall out" as claimed by another review (unless you yank VERY hard...)BOTTOM LINE: This is a very reliable unit that solves the data connectivity issues of cell phone navigation when going through areas with no or limited cell service. It works flawlessly, is easy to use and understand, and appearance wise fits ascetically well within the dash area of the vehicle. For Dodge/Ram/Jeep/Chrysler owners with a navigation system that fails, this is your best bet for replacement and will save you thousands for the same software you are used to having.

Great for the money

First the cons: This feels "cheap". It is lightweight and plastic and the viewscreen is small. That explains the low price point. Also the only American English voices (Samantha and Michelle) sound like real dullards.Pros: We've owned several Garmin GPS devices over the years. This one combines all my favorite features from previous models, so I'm very happy with it.Summary: While the unit itself is not the highest quality, the software is. And you can't beat the price.

Great. But sadly lacking batter power.
14 August 2021

It had been around five years since we purchased our previous Garmin Satnav. Five years usually creates a huge leap in technology when you upgrade to something, so me and my wife were really surprised and quite stunned that the Garmin Drive 51 LM had worse battery power than the one we'd bought years ago. The battery power only lasts up to an hour, whereas the older model lasted about two hours. However, you can still plug it in and get powered from your cars cigarette lighter socket, and its still a great Satnav, with Garmin's usual easy to use touch screen interface. And the Satnav will get you anywhere in England and Europe. If it had a better battery I'd have given it 5 stars instead of 4. I'll finally add though that its very reasonably priced.

Not bad, but is it better than google?
3 January 2021

I’ve recently started driving again after years of not having a car and I have a really poor sense of direction (I even used to use google maps just to get to the local supermarket) anyway I decided it was time for an upgrade as using my phone as a satnav just drained my battery and sometime location was a bit off.Anyway I saw this in the sale and it had all the features I needed (lane guidance, real directions etc)Although it’s getting my location spot on unlike google, it’s starting to turn into more of a faff, say if you wanted to go to ‘Tesco’ you can’t just type ‘Tesco’ in, you have to look up Tesco’s postcode using your phone and type that in instead, it’s supposed to use 4square and trip advisor for businesses but whatever you type in or wherever you type ... MoreI’ve recently started driving again after years of not having a car and I have a really poor sense of direction (I even used to use google maps just to get to the local supermarket) anyway I decided it was time for an upgrade as using my phone as a satnav just drained my battery and sometime location was a bit off.Anyway I saw this in the sale and it had all the features I needed (lane guidance, real directions etc)Although it’s getting my location spot on unlike google, it’s starting to turn into more of a faff, say if you wanted to go to ‘Tesco’ you can’t just type ‘Tesco’ in, you have to look up Tesco’s postcode using your phone and type that in instead, it’s supposed to use 4square and trip advisor for businesses but whatever you type in or wherever you type it in it never finds anything! (I also gave it a full update when it came out of the box)Real directions is a nice touch, instead of saying ‘turn left in 400 yards’ it’ll say ‘turn left at the traffic lights’ for example although only one built in voice is compatible with this and sometimes I’ve come upto a busy roundabout with it being too slow to tell which exit to take or lane to get on on approach so I have to take my eyes off the road to look at it which isn’t recommended (google has had this issue too, but google can sometimes think you’re on a completely different road than the one you’re actually on!)There are some positives though it’s not all bad it has lane guidance for motorways although being in tier 4 and not being able to travel very far from home I haven’t yet been able to try it out on a motorway yet, it accurately displays current speed which has been pretty much spot on and will alert you if you go over or are coming up to various things such as speed cameras, sharp bends, speed limit changes, school zones etc.Overall it’s not bad, it’s got a decent sized screen and the directions (when given) are spoken clearly and easy to understand. The question though is it better than using google maps,Yes and no, it’ll alert you to more (although google warns you of mini roundabouts coming up this doesn’t)I’d say both have their little pros and cons which outweigh each other so I’d say it was a tie, not bad for the price if you’re after a cheap one that does more than the really cheap ones!(Google tried taking me across a field once that clearly was marked ‘no motor vehicles’ luckily I didn’t listen to it!)

So, the reason I purchased this device was because I thought I lost my older GPS. I'm honestly awful at directions and I need a GPS device in my car. The Garmin Drive 51 LMT-S is even more robust than my older GPS (Nuvi 3490LMT) - details are more precise, directions are more accurately by the extra visual information in the screen, loads information faster while connecting to satellite link. The only drawback I can think of is when I type on the screen, it's a tad bit more difficult than my 3490's screen. I'm glad I snatched it up while it was on sale.
