A significant upgrade

I upgraded from Fenix 5, so many features were familiar, but the 7X adds the Body Battery and Pulse OX functions, among others. You can customize (pretty much endlessly), including the touch screen function to be on or off, or on or off during particular activities. Didn't think I'd like it at all, but I do - makes the maps in particular easier to navigate. Love the flashlight feature, particularly the red light option (used it at night for star gazing to preserve night vision). The watch interface is a great improvement - a ton of info on the watch face, with the "Glance" ("Widgets" on the 5) customizable, as are all of the colors. ... MoreI've had this watch for a month now and used it primarily for hiking and running. Finally, the battery life is pretty amazing, as advertised - in my experience the solar feature seems to keep you from losing any battery life when you otherwise would, not adding to the charge, but my solar testing conditions haven't been the best. There's a first-thing-in-the-morning summary of sleep, recovery, preparation for exercise, calendar events and weather, complete with a little life-affirming quote (maybe sappy, but I like it) - like everything else with this watch, you can turn this on or off. The logarithms (no different for this watch than any other Garmin model), aren't the most accurate - Recovery Time in particular is vastly overstated; others have written articles about this, but that's not a dig on this watch (and frankly, I'm amazed that they're brave enough to try and estimate that at all and come as close as they do). If the watch got lost or broken would I buy it again? Yes, and quickly. Would I recommend it to a friend? Assuming they could afford it, yes, without reservation. I have tried pretty much every brand of performance watch at one time or another. This is my favorite, by far. Christmas is coming - tell Santa.

So, when the pool session is “complete” the upload seems to be stuck in limbo and is never uploaded. A work around for this is to connect the USB cable to your PC and then pull the file over from the watch folder to Garmin Connect and then the session is uploaded. So, its clear there is a bug there for pool sessions and this series of watch. What I do now, before I finalize a pool session is go to bluetooth and manually reconnect the watch and then “save” the session, so far, zero problems doing this method. But onwards about the watch features are great, of course the “training readiness” is a little dramatic in my opinion. I was knee deep in training when I bought the watch and ever since its told me I am supposed to rest for 2-3-4 days to be “effective”…..yeah, nah, I can’t do that. But I suppose it’ll work itself out over the next few month to a year to learn “me” and how “ready” I can be.Touch screen is really legit, works as it should and I like it from a quick switch through screens while active in a training session. Not entirely sold on the solar function. Seems like it helps keep some battery life I suppose a little longer than others. But my instinct didnt require as much charging as this watch has already had. But, this watch is pulling a lot more metrics behind the scenes, so it’s draining the battery it seems.Quick insert is the weight is basically nothing and the watch face is a great size. (I read a few concerns about the size and weight and thought I’d end up with a heavy watch. Its not heavy in the slightest to me.)All in all I’m still brand new with the watch and haven't even scratched the surface of all the potential features, but I am happy with the purchase but think I could have saved a little bit of money by just getting the 955 non-solar.

Here are the issues I've noticed:-You can see messages but can't respond to them on the watch-You cannot download music from Apple Music to the watch-The watches durability might be less impressive than expected. I haven't had any major issues but after my recent trip (through hiking) I noticed the paint on the watch body and start/stop button guard start scraping off. This is a little surprising because I haven't put it through anything I would consider overly gritty and was hoping for it to keep its looks a little longer. None of these durability issues have effected performance.Overall a great combo of GPS unit and smart watch. I'll be getting a lot use out of mine.

I recently purchased the Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar - and absolutely love it! I've been using Garmin products for years and have always had good luck with the products and company/customer service - so choosing Garmin over other competitive brands/products was never really a consideration for me. As a multi sport endurance athlete, prior to the Fenix 7X, I wore the FR 935 (and 910XT before that). My FR 935 worked fine - no complaints. I typically train every day so switching from dress watch (Rolex) to sport watch is not ideal. So for quite some time now, I basically wear my Garmin watch every day. (I still love my Rolex and wear it for special/more formal occasions) What attracted me to the Fenix 7X was the sapphire crystal. I wanted all the functionality of a multi-sport watch and something that looked like a nice/high-quality watch, as well. (The Gorilla glass holds up pretty well, but after a while, mine started to look a little rough). I was a little concerned about the size and weight of the 7X as compared to my FR 935 (or new FR 955) and did as much research as I could before pulling the trigger. I finally made the decision to go with the 7X Sapphire Solar - and absolutely love it! As a multi-sport watch it's awesome! And, as a nice looking high-quality time piece for my everyday wear - it looks great! I'm not sure if I'll ever use all of the functionality the Fenix has to offer - but that's okay. I'm sure I don't use all of my iPhone, either. As for size and weight, it is slightly larger and heavier than my FR 935 (and the new FR 955), but within a day or two of wearing it and getting used to it - it's not an issue. I wear it all time, including when sleeping. We already know Garmin battery life is amazing so I take it off occasionally to charge it. I'm 6'0'' / 190 lbs. So far, I'm loving my new Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar and would absolutely recommend it. PS. I use the flashlight all the time! Who knew that would be a thing? Good luck - and I hope this information is helpful.

Mostly Exceeded Expectations

The 955 Solar was a wonderful Father’s Day surprise. I reluctantly made the switch from Apple Watch after beginning to train for an Ironman. Despite the laughably poor battery life of an Apple Watch, I really liked that device as it helped me shed 60 pounds and keep it off. However, that tracker simply didn’t work well while swimming, and it would never make it through an Ironman.A friend gave me his ancient and enormous, square Forerunner from years ago, and that was far better in the water, but it did not offer heart rate data while swimming. After complaining enough, the Father’s Day elves produced a 955 Solar that was transformational. For triathlons and open water swims, it is clearly superior in every way. After complaining enough, the Father’s Day elves produced a 955 Solar that was transformational. For triathlons and open water swims, it is clearly superior in every way. The battery life is fantastic of course. That said, I could not give up the Apple Watch easily because it was such an integral part of my life. Wore both watches for a while to compare how they tracked data, calories, etc. Turned out the Garmin was much more stingy with calories - the Apple Watch might indicate I burned 1400 active calories, while the Garmin indicated 900. That was very relieving because I got accustomed to knowing target calories to burn daily, etc. Was happy to find Garmin does not allow easy results.Found a watch face in Garmin IQ (its online store/app platform somewhat like the Apple Store) that mimics the Apple Health Rings/Activities, so that is cool to migrate from Apple to Garmin if you are familiar with and enslaved like I am by the Pavlovian rings. :))The Garmin integrates very nicely with Training Peaks that I am using to prepare for the Ironman - but… the swim plans are a big pain. For whatever reason, everything integrates (bike, run, etc.), except swim. You must swim and then sync the swim back and forth with Training Peaks. This doesn’t sound like a big deal, and it’s really not, but it’s those little things that begin to add up and frustrate. Surely, this software glitch - and who is to blame for it - will be fixed. Nobody cares whose fault it is. Just fix it.:)) The device and the apps already play well together except for swim plans, so fix the swim. Please. :))Otherwise, I find the watch screen to be not quite as stunning as it is portrayed in the ads that appear to use OLED screens like the ones on my daughters’ Venu watches. No clue why Garmin would set an expectation for the brilliance of an OLED screen with a watch that is already so good that it doesn’t need such a battery-draining bell and whistle. I would recommend Garmin stop using the sexy watch screen images in the ads and use what is more realistic. It looks like that is already happening in the more recent ads that are showing up, which is good. Keep expectations real, especially when the device is already so good. So, with all of that said, I still give this watch 5 stars. It has exceeded my expectations in the swim and open water swim areas. The battery life is legendary. The accuracy is way better than the Apple Watch. It works better with other third-party apps (it will be perfect when Training Peaks and Garmin play well together with the swim plan), and overall it has emerged to be a better tracker in just about everything- I’ve even noticed I have more in common with my daughters now that we can talk about body battery and stress scores, which they also have on their Venu watches - but which I never had before. That underscores why this watch was not only a great triathlon trainer but also an outstanding Father’s Day present. :))

Not worth it

After much research into a replacement for my old Suunto Ambit, I purchased the Fenix 7 Solar. After trying it for a couple weeks, I ultimately exchanged it for a Suunto 9 Peak Pro.My use case is multisport training including primarily running, cycling, xc-skiing, alpine skiing, and hiking. I was attracted to this model for the long battery life with the solar charging and hoped to make use of the mapping features it offered. What I found out is that the mapping is all-but-useless on such a small display, at least for my aging eyes, and especially in overcast, flat or dim light. So the main differentiating feature (mapping) for all Garmin Fenix models when compared with other brands is basically not worth the bother in many lighting conditions. So the main differentiating feature (mapping) for all Garmin Fenix models when compared with other brands is basically not worth the bother in many lighting conditions. I'm planning some long distance hikes in potentialy rainy weather in the UK, and felt this would end up being noticed a lot.The other disappointment was with the Garmin software. Although improved somewhat since I last owned a Garmin watch (older Forerunner), the Garmin apps are still futzy, bloated and generally not polished. Some things you can do only on the phone app while others require going to the desktop. It's all very disjointed and needs some serious reworking. Given all of the resources Garmin has at their disposal being a market leader in the fitness and navigation devices, I expected better.I'm back in Suunto-land once again without mapping on my wrist, but the 9 Peak Pro otherwise does everything I need it to do, at a lower price and with higher build quality, lighter weight, and slimmer on the wrist, to boot. The Suunto App is more than adequate for tracking long-term training trends, and I like iPad version of their app, which Garmin lacks. The battery life on the 9 Peak Pro seems about on par with the Fenix, even without solar. Maybe under sunny conditions in warm (non-jacket) weather the solar would offer a slight longevity advantage.I briefly considered switching to the Garmin Epix and would expect the mapping experience to be better on its Amoled display than on the Fenix series. But the Epix is quite a spendy piece of kit, with inferior battery life compared to practically all other sports watches except for the Apple Watch, which blows it away for smartwatch features. And with the Epix you are still hampered by the unsatisfying Garmin Connect app and desktop software. So...pass.

So Far I am impressed.

I purchased this 2 months ago replacing my Suunto Ambit 2. This is a big upgrade for sure. Overall I am still learning how to use it. Part of the problem with all new electronics is it has more features that you can use, or realize. So here is a brief overview: Using it for mountaineering, super fast and accurate GPS. Nice to have the maps preloaded. Since the screen is still a watch, you have to learn how to zoom in and out while the screen is locked. The specific screens are totally customizable and thus very helpful but takes a bit of time to set it all up. I so far do not think much of the solar...does not really seem to make much of a difference in battery life. Speaking of the battery, overall really good considering the features that use energy. I so far do not think much of the solar...does not really seem to make much of a difference in battery life. Speaking of the battery, overall really good considering the features that use energy. The heart rate monitor is OK, not always correct. At the beginning of a climb I will be working really hard at altitude and it shows a walking heart rate. Over time, and in certain positions, seems to "catch up". I really like the feature of automatically using the map elevation to set the altimeter when starting a climb. Seems like the elevation gain and loss is still dependent on how windy it is, which changes the pressure and thus adds elevation gain.So at present seems to be working well, I am able to use it and customize it, but it does take work to learn and set it up for your liking. My biggest negative is the watch face should be more easy to read, without using the back light. I think this will improve but at present kind of hard if not in bright light. Won't give it 5 stars until I use it for much longer and see if it continues to hold up.

So far not good

I bought this item 3 weeks ago. It has the potential to be a nice watch but so far I’ve experience 3 disappointing features:1. Battery life - this is clearly an issue the many struggle with as Garmin has specific advice on the support site for this. However even following the recommendations this product is disappointing. The battery life estimator is inaccurate (says 5 days left when the watch has hours left). They could do a lot better with providing the user feedback on how settings impact battery life and how solar is extending it. My guess is solar does very little and I grossly overpaid for that feature.2. Weather updates just don’t work. Sleep features and all other features that require wearing a bulky watch when you sleep. I’d be interested to know what percentage of users actually wear their watches to bed. It seems like a great product extension for Garmin to have a sleep monitor that doesn’t have to be worn or is more comfortable for sleeping than a watch. Unfortunately wearing a watch negatively impacts the quality of my sleep so I don’t get the benefit of any of these features….and these are features that I really would like to be able to use. Not to mention that with the poor battery life performance I have to charge the watch at night.

So far so good...

Bought December 22 and used a few times before taking a break feom regular workouts. Used for skiing, hunting, regular calisthenics, weights, and triathlon training. Skiing worked great, it kept track of all the runs, speeds, etc. I didn't know how to find the actual resort with names of runs and such even though it was preloaded, but it detected all the vitals and determined when I was going up the lift and where I was. GPS seems very good. The hunting was more "yes/no" text response, step tracking and such. would like to have used the actual tracking/way points etc. but didn’t have time to figure it out. Did use the map/ compass/ altimeter a bit (mostly because it's cool). would be awesome to be able to overlay gis maps when hunting, maybe you can? it somehow ... MoreBought December 22 and used a few times before taking a break feom regular workouts. Did use the map/ compass/ altimeter a bit (mostly because it's cool). would be awesome to be able to overlay gis maps when hunting, maybe you can? it somehow knows how many push-ups I do and is really accurate on lifting reps. treadmill calibration was surprisingly accurate first time but I messed it up somehow (believe i waited too long to push stop and it included some slow down.) I need to redo, I hope I can. Swimming is very good, I like the ability to have countdown start. whether a smooth mile or intervals it works great. had to put exercise bike distance in manually, no big deal. haven't run outside or biked outside yet. I enjoy the morning report, body battery, weather, sleep tracking, etc. have used the on board music and it is very nice to have just ear buds and watch, and not have to worry about a phone and accidental screen touching (since I don't use any music apps, haven't figured out how to lock screen and keep playing on phone) The fit/comfort are great and battery seems unrealistic in how long it lasts and how quick it charges. I only worry about scratches and stuff (possibly put a liquid protector on but haven't decided yet. ) touch response is great, like having buttons also. I will learn more about the training and readiness stuff just haven't had time to check out and get a decent baseline or put specific goals in although I'd like to do a half-Ironman this year or next. I don't have it exposed to the sun much but it does work good holding charge when in the sun. interface with phone is great (android), love the app, easy to use. haven't joined up with strava or others yet. much more could be said and learned by me, so far so good though! great job garmin.

Surprisingly Better Than I Thought
9 October 2022

I loved the FR935. It was lower profile, fit well under a dress shirt cuff, did all the activities that I wanted, and was durable (although the bands would typically fail every five months or so). The Garmin ecosystem is something that I enjoy. The FR955 Solar is almost everything that the 935 was but with solar, which I really wanted. I had considered the Enduro because I wanted the solar capability but that watch is too large to wear in a work environment (dress shirt) for me and would have been an activity-specific tool, and who wants to shell out that kind of money for a watch you only wear when you go out to train? So when the 955 came out, I ordered one.I was skeptical that I would like the touchscreen on a workout watch and that there would be too many ... MoreI loved the FR935. So when the 955 came out, I ordered one.I was skeptical that I would like the touchscreen on a workout watch and that there would be too many features I did not want. The touchscreen feature can be turned off altogether or just during an activity. All the functions, like music and Garmin pay, can be controlled via the watch and turned off if preferred. There are several very in-depth videos out there on the tube that can walk you through these and answer most every question you might have. Now I only deal with the features I want and have the others turned off and out of the way. It would be nice if you could delete those from the watch to free up memory space for maps.If I had a complaint, it is that it is a bit thicker than the 935 on the wrist. It does not fit under the cuff as well as the 935. I get it; those solar parts must go somewhere, but it is my review, and I get to be picky if I like.I wanted a watch that I would wear all the time, working, training, sports, and outdoors. The 935 did that spectacularly. The 955 is the natural progression of that watch to add solar. If this is what you are looking for, then this is the watch for you. It is almost the Fenix lite.
