GERBER CENTER-DRIVE MULTI-TOOL + SHEATHI recently received a GERBER STAINLESS STEEL MULTI-TOOL to review through the Sparkreviewer program. It has turned out to be a very well constructed and designed and useful tool and it is made in the USA.It features a total of 14 tools including spring loaded needle nose pliers, standard pliers, rotatable carbide wire cutters and a wire stripper. All come in handy when I have electrical work to do around the house. The pliers slide easily in and out of the tool with your thumb. I noticed on the package where it describes “ONE-THUMB OPENING” it says “SIMPLE, INTUITIVE SLIDING JAWS OPEN W/THUMB OR FLICK OF WRIST.” I don’t doubt that it can be done with a “flick of the wrist,” but it was not an action I was able to ... The center alignment makes starting a screw much easier since you don’t have the handle wobbling around. Other handy features include a 3 ½” LOCKING KNIFE BLADE that is very sharp, PRY BAR, NAIL PULLER, BOTTLE OPENER, SERRATED BLADE, a functional COARSE AND FINE FILE. There are additional features but I’ve mentioned the main tools that are included.I like this tool very much and highly recommend it because of its high quality and usefulness. It is a tool I will want to have with me whenever I am working on projects around the house or helping others with their projects.

The Gerber Center-Drive 14-Tool Multi-Tool Pliers w/ Sheath is the best Gerber Multi-Tool I've owned and I've been using these things for almost 30 years. The construction has come a long way and this tool is light but so strong. There are probably 14 tools in this thing somewhere, but I'm not sure I've found them all. The main ones are pliers, knife, screwdriver (both phillips and standard), saw, file, hole punch, and bottle opener/mini pry bar combo. There's also markings for inches (3) and cm (8) engrained on the inner handle knife side, so maybe they count that as 2 tools? That still leaves me 3 short, but those are the main ones. And the important thing is those are all really useful and well designed. The pliers are strong and have a great grip - probably the ... And the important thing is those are all really useful and well designed. The pliers are strong and have a great grip - probably the best overall use along with the knife blade. The screwdriver is also actually useful and not just gimmicky. There's a magnetic head that's strong enough you won't lose it but easy enough to swap out if you need the standard head which is hidden away in the handle on the screwdriver side. There are smart releases for everything too. A slider for the pliers, a lever you need to push in for the blade to unlock, and a thumb slider you push to release the saw, file, hole punch and bottle opener. The design is interesting in that it feels lightweight, yet has weight in the places that need it. You can feel the quality in every element of this design, and is representative of why Gerber is one of the best names in multi-tools. Made in the USA too! Highly recommended!

I work as a site superintendant for a heavy civil contractor, this tool fits my needs. The pliers are incredibly handy for fixing fencing and posting signage with tie wire, and I like the fact that this tool is tailored more towards trade work rather than a survival tool. Nice size blade, easy deployment, and a great little serrated edge for cutting cord and rope. I like the little pry bar as well. The center drive tool is incredibly handy, if I have one complaint, it’s that it doesn’t come with more bits. But on the flip side, bits are a dime a dozen and I can outfit the pouch with whatever bits I need and tailor it even closer to my needs. Great buy, sturdy tool, worth the investment.

Carrying the extra bits is easy because this tool comes with the same sheath as the more expensive version that included the set of bits. The sheath has a pocket for the set of bits, they just don't come with the tool.As I said, this IS still a good multi-tool. It is better than most of the off-brand tools and better than even many of the name-brand tools -- but it isn't as good as the current Gerber Center-Drive Multi-Tool.You can find hundreds of reviews for the Gerber Center-Drive Multi-Tool online that fully describe the strengths and weaknesses of the Gerber design and materials. Look at the older reviews for an accurate description of this version. This version does not have the scissors. It does have the wire cutter with replaceable blades and the replacement blades are available if you find you need them (they are a bit pricey for as small as they are). The actual Gerber set of bits for the driver are also available (much too pricey) but you can get an off-brand set of bits for much less.I will mention that two of the tools are available for use without opening the pliers portion of the tool. Those two tools are the large knife blade and the driver for the bits. It comes with one Phillips screwdriver bit installed and one flat-tip screwdriver bit buried inside the pliers; you can swap those if you expect to use the flat-tip driver more often, but it's probably smarter to get a set of bits to carry in the sheath pocket. Using any of the other tools, requires opening the pliers first.Bottom line: The current model Gerber Center-Drive Multi-Tool would almost certainly rate 5 stars. This version loses one star for being the older version without the scissors and one star for not including the set of bits, but I gave that star back because it sells for a lower price than the ones with the bit set included. The description of this product on the Walmart website is accurate in telling you what you do get, but just doesn't mention that it is an older version or that this version comes without the bits. Walmart also sells this same older version online with the bit set at a higher price. In fact they have the same tool in different packages from different vendors at several different prices, so look carefully to see exactly what you are getting. All the Gerber Center-Drive Multi-Tools that I saw on the Walmart website appear to be the same older version without the scissors.
I've been carrying this in my pocket for about a week now and I've just about fallen in love with it. It has pretty much everything you need for minor repairs on this or that. I've used it doing repairs on my bicycle during my afternoon rides, on my SUV to fix that pesky sharp wire next to my seat slide and a dozen other things around the house. It's quality made in America with quality steel and it has a firm and solid feel. It does take a little getting used to, however. It opens and closes different from every other multi-tool that I've ever seen. It uses a series of slides and it's really counter intuitive. And, there's no manual or booklet included which left me playing with it for five to ten minutes before I got it figured out. This is really something that ... And, there's no manual or booklet included which left me playing with it for five to ten minutes before I got it figured out. This is really something that needs to be improved in the future. When you make a product that's unlike anything we've ever seen before, give us a how to manual with it. Just a little pet-peeve of mine that I thought I should mention. I still think it's an incredible tool and I'm seriously considering getting a couple for my two stepsons. I would highly recommend it! It's just not the easiest tool to get the hang of initially. But once you do, it's clear sailing.
I had high hopes for this as I liked the fact that the tools were larger than what you'd find on most multi-tools. Sure, it comes at the expense of quantity of tools, but most (not all) of the tools this Gerber tool forgoes are rarely used. (I would have liked a saw.) The fact that the screwdriver is centered on the tool is a nice touch. But honestly, not that big of a selling point as even with this, using the squared off handle makes using the screwdriver awkward and only for when you can't get a simple regular screwdriver. (This is true of any multi-tool, not just this one.) And the main blade performed OK in the "slice a single sheet of paper" test, although not so well in the "shave your arm hair" test. (This is true of any multi-tool, not just this one.) And the main blade performed OK in the "slice a single sheet of paper" test, although not so well in the "shave your arm hair" test. Some hair was removed, but it was more pulling it out than shaving it cleanly. But the reason I really can't recommend this is because there are just things about this tool that simply don't work as well as I would want. First, as seen in my image, the inside knife is very awkward to use. This is because unlike a Leatherman, this tool does not fold inside out. So the inner tools are always inside the handle. As you can see in the image, this means you are cutting toward the inside of the handle which does not allow the entire blade to be easily used since the handle will hit whatever you are cutting. It would have been much better if, instead of the unnecessarily large locking mechanize on the one side, there were two more tools, (including this knife and the aforementioned missing saw) on the outside. The other difference over most multi-tools is how the pliers come out. Since it doesn't fold inside out to protect the blades as most do, this has a slider to pop the pliers out, which also opens the handle. In theory, there is nothing wrong with this approach, but the slider is very finicky, getting stuck often until you wiggle it a bit. And since it has to slide pretty far to come all the way out, one handed operation is different as well, unless you have really long thumbs. The bottom line is that while this tool is not a complete failure, for the price, there are far better multi-tools available. This is a good example of form over function. This one looks like with the black powdercoating. But those looks do nothing to improve the usefulness. And quite frankly, with any decent amount of use, that powdercoating will wear off and look worse than if it had been left uncoated. But I guess it makes it look good in the display. But unless you are looking to add this to your display collection rather than one to use, I would take a pass on this.
I thought the triple edge wire cutters were a great idea but they shatter easily. I bought replacements and they shattered without me even using them (maybe I overtorqued the bolt). I did like the screwdriver being centre but not worth the money.I have a Gerber diesel and a Leatherman wave plus and I like them both. Most people prefer Leatherman because they feel more solid and have better blades. The centre drive was more expensive and the only one that disappointed me.
The Gerber Center Drive multi-tool is an impressive accessory to have. Contrary to many multi “tools” that feel more like a pair of pliers with some gadgets attached to look important, the Gerber Center Drive is actually a really nice adaptation and justifies the use of the term “tool”. The boom extension for the bits (Philips and flat head included) provides a much more natural feel, while giving you more options to use the bits and having a much stronger feel to tighten screws or nuts. Having 2 boys heavily involved in sports, there is always a helmet of theirs or a teammate’s that needs tightening or a folding chair for a parent that could use some work. The Gerber Center Drive handles those jobs easily. The included knife is very sharp and locks in securely ... MoreThe Gerber Center Drive multi-tool is an impressive accessory to have. The pliers/cutters are very strong, yet precise making you feel confident in the task you are working on. It’s also made in the USA which is awesome to see, but come on Gerber, make the sheath in the US too please and bring a couple more jobs home. The sheath also comes with a pocket that you could carry additional bits to fit different size screw drivers or nut sizes which is nice. Overall, this is a quality product that I will continue to find uses for daily. The first picture is a comparison of a typical Philips screwdriver on a multi-tool vs. the screwdriver on the Gerber Center DriveThe second picture shows all of the tools included open.
When I un-boxed the Gerber Multi-tool, it took me some time to figure out how to open them. I watched a youtube video review on a similar tool and finally figured out that the opening of the tool is a two step process. On the opposite handle of the obvious slide-down lock, there is a button that also slides forward. When slid forward the jaws of the tool move outside of the handles and then allows the larger lock to open the handles. Once I got this figured out opening and closing was easy. The jaws are very nicely machined and feature a replaceable wire clipper blade that also has a notch to help when stripping insulation from wire. A #2 Philips comes with the tool, but any standard tip can be fit into that space. The file is two-sided having both coarse and fine machining. The cutting tools are very sharp and have a fine hard edge. All of the multi-tool blades are well done and lock securely into place when being used. This will make a fine fishing tool or general purpose outdoors or handy tool for the handy-man to carry around. It is stout, heavy and precision. The carry bag can be secured to a belt or any type of strap such as on a backpack.Any person that can use a tool would be proud to carry this one. I use it almost daily on computer installation jobs, cutting and stripping wire and tightening screws and nuts. Highly recommend this Gerber quality tool.
As expensive as this multi-tool is I would normally shy away, but I purchased one a few years ago because it looked like it had a functional screwdriver (unlike most). It was hands down the best multi tool I've ever owned BUT I lost it last fall.... BUT... I kept an eye out and bought a new one when they came on sale. Later today I'm going out with a metal detector to see if I can find the one I lost. One drawback? It NEEDS a better belt pouch as the Velcro gets weary and eventually allows the tool to drop out. Yep.. that's how I lost the one I'm going searching for later today. Worth it to purchase.. and worth it to look for the one I lost.
