We are trying to figure out why our cat is loosing fur on her belly and itching. When looking up what food to use for elimination diet (in case she is allergic to current food), this was recommended. In order to know if it is the food causing this reaction, you must do the elimination diet for 8-10 weeks feeding ONLY this diet. Her previous food was regular Hill's Science diet, so I am glad we are able to stick to the same brand. She likes it which is fantastic, so we will see if it eliminates the itching and fur licking.

My cat loves this food as well as the z/d wet food. Not only does he love it but he has no more itchy skin!! You definitely need some patience this wont happen right away and it will seem like it isn't helping at all and then one day they just stop itching. He never had a problem eating either of the foods. I buy the food through my local APL so I haven't had any issues with the dry food being out of stock but the wet food has been out of stock at my APL for a month or so now. Overall my cat loves his food and his skin and fur looks better than ever !!

I bought this because my vet recommended this brand for my 3 year old cat. It’s really good for her digestive system, she used to throw up her food (not from hair balls) and have diarrhea randomly. So I bought the 4 pound bag, because 32$ is a bit steep for me. When I pour it out it looks like dog kipple. Zora (my cat) isn’t very fond of it, in fact she probably only eats it because she’s hungry. I have notice she doesn’t throw up, and her poops have solidified more. But she doesn’t like it, each morning she meows at me to feed her and I look and her dish is still full. I shake the dish she runs over to me sniffs the food, and meows at me, then walks away. ... so I’m in-between of buying it again. I wish she’d enjoy it more.

Excellent product, my ragdoll cats are doing well.
13 October 2022

Thought I was going to lose one of my cats when she had reactions to repeated feeding of another brand. This saved the day and brought her back to normal after around 2 days. The vet said to remove all food except this one and it has definitely helped. Both my cats have looser motions using this food but that's better than the alternative. Happy to get it here.

Once we went through the process of weaning our long haired 5 yr old cat off her Hills prescription dry food to this sensitive line her skin cleared up nicely. She will therefore be on this from now on. We do feed her wet kangaroo meat which the vet told me is the lest hypo-allergenic meat you can feed a cat. Just adding that so you understand she's not totally eating dry food of course. So delighted with this dry food line for her

Helps my two cats with sensitive stomachs
7 October 2021

I have two cats who are older now and have had sensitive stomachs since they were young. They have been eating this food for years and it has largely resolved the problems they had on other foods, even some limited ingredient foods. The drawback of this food is that it's expensive and the price has increased a lot over the years. I also wish it didn't require a prescription, and I really don't understand why it does. This product is not harmful for cats who don't have GI issues, so why require pet parents and pet food sellers to go through the extra step of getting an approval to buy this food? Even though it is expensive, it is better than your cat suffering or needing a more expensive medical intervention from the side effects of eating a food that makes them vomit, have diarrhea, and bleed.

Hill's Prescription Diet Z/D Dry vs Wet Cat Food
4 February 2018

This product was purchased for my 12 year old cat, Yo-Dee, who's had IBS for a year now. After trying numerous OTC wet and dry food to control his problem, my Vet suggested using only the Wet form of Z/D. We did and it worked magically to stop the vomiting, however, he was still on an antibiotic, so the diarrhea did not completely go away, but changed consistency (pudding like). I consulted my Vet regarding the Dry form of this food and wondered if maybe the dry food would help the diarrhea condition. He agreed it should have no adverse affect and might help, but sadly it didn't work. Yo-Dee's very watery diarrhea & vomiting returned. The minute I stopped the dry and returned to wet only, his stool changed back to pudding consistency and the vomiting stopped. The minute I stopped the dry and returned to wet only, his stool changed back to pudding consistency and the vomiting stopped. So, I can't fault the dry food for it's quality at all! It's a great product, if your cat can tolerate dry food. Z/D does work for IBS Cats and now after being on it for approx. 4 weeks, the volume of his stool is more normal, but we won't know about the consistency until he gets completely off the antibiotic in 5 days. Since Yo-Dee can not have the Dry Z/D, I fed it to my 2 other cats, who loved it! Regarding the consistency of the Wet Food - some people have written they (human) did not like the consistency of the pate, because it was like a jell. My Yo-Dee can hardly wait for me to get it out of the can and mush it up with a slight amount of water before he starts taking hunks of it and chewing it up. I don't put the whole can out at once. I cut pie shaped slices out, making it approx. 6 servings at a time. When this is gone, I give him more after a few hours. He seems very satisfied and begs me for more when his tummy says it's time to eat.

New formula, but the cat likes it even more
19 August 2019

I was always anti-Science Diet because I believe that an all wet food diet is optimal for cats, and second to that is a grain-free food such as Merrick. However, when my cat developed serious digestive intolerance for fish and poultry, and I learned that a single can of venison costs about $6, my vet suggested Science Diet z/d. She explained that prescription diets like this and its competitor, Royal Canin, are the only types of food one can count on to have no allergens potentially getting into the food. Other brands can offer a limited ingredient diet, but it is possible that they have small amounts of cross-contamination from other flavors the company makes...and even that tiny amount could be causing digestive issues. This solved my cat's issues. I began with the canned version, but she finally tired of eating nothing but that, and was routinely finding ways to steal food off my plate while I was eating! She was that desperate for a different flavor. So I decided to try the dry food, which I serve alongside ground lamb (just from the supermarket, not made for cats). Sure enough, she loved it. She is still currently rejecting the cans. When I read that the dry food had a new formula, I was worried, but it turns out that she likes it even more than the original.

Rejected at first... now likes it

This was prescribed for my chonky male cat to treat his diarrhea. I followed the vet's advice and introduced it very slowly over 10-12 days. With even just a few pieces mixed in with his usual stuff on the first day, he walked away from it. This continued for about a week as I dutifully continued to change the proportions. Chonk that he is, he always returned to it and finished, but he wanted to make sure I knew he wasn't happy about it. Thankfully, by day nine or ten, he stopped walking away, and he's been on it 100% for a couple of weeks. He seems to like it now, but I suspect it's more filling than his old food because he doesn't scarf it down in one go like he used to. Unfortunately there's been no change to the diarrhea. He's had a GI panel and they found nothing conclusive. Next step is an ultrasound, but I'm going to wait awhile longer to see if this prescription diet helps. I'm giving it five stars because it's a high quality product. Of course like most reviewers, I wish it was less expensive!

fixed his skin, but he got FAAAAAAT
9 September 2021

Vet recommended this for my tabby who has always had really bad dandruff and sticky/stinky/oily patches on his back. It totally did fix his skin... but it also made him morbidly obese, even with a reduction in the amount! We've tried exercising, cutting down the food, mixing it with other food (although for the diet to work best it needs to be the ONLY thing he is eating). At this point, I think I rather him be scaly than develop a shorter lifespan due to how fat he got. It works, and he'll eat it, but now he's depressed and fat watch out!
