These work for sandwiches and steaks, especially if you run into the rare person that likes a well done steak or to cook a rare or medium-rare steak really quickly. They're heavy duty cast iron, so a light wipe with olive oil or bacon grease when you're done keeps them ready for the next use.

I purchased the ribbed pan to grill meats which need to be seared before final cooking. Also wanted to be able to put the pan in a hot oven to finish and not worry about the handle etc. suffering from high heat. The pan works as intended and the Press is a perfect addition. I place the Press in the pan when I preheat and let the two come up to heat together. Then it's a matter of placing the meat in between and letting the pan and press do t heir magic. Don't be afraid to let them get rocket hot before introducing the meat they can take it. Haven't made paninis yet but expect the process to be simple. The weight of the Press is sufficient to hold the meat in place. Only reason for the 4 not 5 stars is the price of the Press which is more than the pan itself. I've not yet used this press to make a panino, but it is quite heavy and performed admirably to flatten a chuck roast i seared the other day. As advertised, this had a few spots where the seasoning had been chipped off. For an item such as this, that's no big issue...just wipe it down after use and put it away for next time...it'll be just fine. If you're not using a heavy press when searing meat, you're missing the boat.

The Panini press I purchased was chipped at two places. They had 6-8 pieces more and they all were chipped as well. I needed one desperately so I had to buy one, had to select a bad piece amongst the worst ones, it should be stored or transported properly to avoid damage to their inventory. Defective pieces should not be sold to anyone in any condition. Can be a health and safety hazard and can also tarnish the image of the manufacturers like Lodge.
I bought this instead of a new panini maker to use on my portable, long, stovetop grill to make paninis! This works great!!! I love the cast iron and plan to take it camping too! Be sure to use a pot holder to pick it up after you heat it to put on top your panini and when you take it off ! It of course, gets very hot! Made pininis last night and they were delicious!!! (One turkey with cheese and a various cheese! Plan to look up recipes tonight!) Easy to clean and store!!! Wise purchase that I can use often in various ways in my cooking!
I bought the press and 2 days after receiving it via shipping, I washed it and left it in the drying rack next to the sick. The next day I noticed some of the coating was already peeling on the upper surface and edges and the bottom (actual press surface) was showing rust. This is after one wash and I live it Las Vegas where dampness goes to die.
My friend loves to cook especially meals that are quick and creative. He uses his griddle on his stove ALL THE TIME. This panini press has opened his griddle horizons and he has been using is constantly. It never gets stored.
I bougth this wrought-iron topper press for my Mom as a present. We used it yesturday, right out of the box and it work pretty well. Its already somewhat fully pre-seasoned from the manufacturer, as the instructions stated so, and it was, for the most part, ready-to-go. The weight of the lid is great and the sandwich was well browned, just like the speciality restaurants would of made. However, the sandwiches top piece of bread did stick abit to the lid, until the butter melted. Nexted time, I'll heat heat the lid, in the dry pan first, for about acouple seconds, and then lift the lid and add the sandwiches. Well worth every cent spent and we were both tickled. You have to watch the pan and the lid - every min. to avoid burning the bread. (I bought the Panani recipe ... MoreI bougth this wrought-iron topper press for my Mom as a present. You have to watch the pan and the lid - every min. to avoid burning the bread. (I bought the Panani recipe book also, which was nice - but the only thing I would change about the book would for it to have more pictures of the sandwiches). The sandwiches we made were: sharp cheddar cheese, bacon, with sliced fresh pear, on white pot. bread. A good combination and tasted wonderful. My mom is using this lid to press bacon so it stays flat in the cooking pan, to press steaks for great sear marks, and so-on. I'm nexted to purchase one of these lids for myself and my family. My sister also owns this lid and is also quite pleased. Makes a great gift and works well with any pan, we've found, even a huge flat grill, or griddle. The lid can cover two big sanwiches at a time, or one huge steak, or twelve pieces of bacon, which is great!
I bought this with the grill pan, and the two work well to make paninis on my gas stovetop. It's heavy and the handle gets as hot as the press, but it works great, cleans up well, and is a very manageable size. It stores more easily than a full press, and is a great tool. My family is loving weekly paninis!
Lodge always comes through with excellent quality cast iron products. I’m in love with the weight of the press. The panini press takes my sandwich making to the next level. FYI, remember if you choose to wash dry off immediately as to avoid rust. Best to just wipe clean with a paper towel after use rather than washing.
