My yoga instructor let me try out her Manduka mat when she saw me trying to pad my knees with a towel, and I loved how my joints were cushioned and my sweaty feet and palms didn’t slip, so I decided to buy myself one. Mine isn’t soft like hers at all. I still have to put a rolled up towel under my knees (which I didn’t have to do with hers). Also, I find it very slippery. I understand it gets better with use, but I’ve done cross training on mine almost every day for the past two weeks and it’s not getting better. I just tried the salt trick and I can’t say it did anything. For a mat whose key selling points were non-slip and thickness, it failed in both categories. You shouldn’t have to use a product for months to finally get it to work how it’s supposed to.

TLDR: I LOVE IT NOW. So when i first bought this mat, it was so slippery it was like there was an oil slick. I used salt with water and scrubbed it, left it for 24 hours, in the sun etc and i still secretly hated it. So slippery, and I wasn't sweating or anything. after a few months i gave up and put it away. Three house moves and three years later and i started using again and wow! I wish i had stuck with it or cleaned it more etc. because it is the best yoga mat i have ever owned, by far. I am now looking into the taller one because mine is too short and saw all the review about how slippery. So yes, you'll have to figure out how to break it in, but when you do it'll be your friend for life. so dense, looks new after years of use.

I purchased my first Manduka mat in 2001, about a year after I first began to practice. A Manduka Pro. My husband got one too. I've been doing yoga since then on a daily basis, teaching since 2007. It is STILL my preferred mat--and it looks and functions exactly the same now, 23 years later, as it did the day I bought it. Through the years, I've also purchased a lighter travel mat for conferences and classes away. Another 3 mats for students to use in my studio when they have forgotten theirs, two more for gifts, two more because I love the colors there are now, and today I just bought one of the super large mats because in our new home, I have a tile floor in the area I Zoom teach from rather than the wood floor in my practice/teaching space, so I need a bit of ... MoreI purchased my first Manduka mat in 2001, about a year after I first began to practice. I recommend Manduka to all my clients. What a great company. What a great product. I have kept so many mats out of landfills because of you, Manduka. Thank you. Definitely a life-long purchase.

I bought my Manduka Pro mat after completing YTT and it has changed my practice for the better in a few ways, at this time I really don't forsee ever using any other mat again. I had been using a cheap 1 inch mat since beginning yoga and thought my practice was great as I was rapidly progressing but upgrading to a Manduka Pro, which is much thinner but more dense and stable, has been an eye opener; I'm able to go deeper into poses and feel stable there, my mat doesn't stretch out when I go into downward dog nor does it slide across the floor easily. I didn't do the traditional sea salt break in, I practiced twice daily for 3 days before I decided that it could benefit from some break in, instead of the salt method I used a damp magic eraser sponge to break it in and ... MoreI bought my Manduka Pro mat after completing YTT and it has changed my practice for the better in a few ways, at this time I really don't forsee ever using any other mat again. I didn't do the traditional sea salt break in, I practiced twice daily for 3 days before I decided that it could benefit from some break in, instead of the salt method I used a damp magic eraser sponge to break it in and it was done within 5 minutes, after that was finished I dried it with a microfiber rag then sprayed with Manduka mat wash & dried again, after that it was perfect and I haven't had any issues with slipping since. I'm very satisfied with this purchase and look forward to a lifetime of yoga on this mat.
This mat is a bit like a dog that you brought home from the shelter that you thought maybe would just be able to sit and stay, but actually took more training than you anticipated. After some substantial attention, you become best friends and forget all about the hard times. But if somebody tells you they're going to get a dog, you warn them that it won't be all love and light. That's how this yoga mat is. It's a bombproof mat that will outlast the transmission in your truck. For that reason, I do recommend the black color, but what do I know about how clean the blue will be in five years? Just a hunch. It's thick, so it's cushiony on the knees. I give the mat 5 stars. But I give the company 2 or 3 stars for how they advertise this thing. But I give the company 2 or 3 stars for how they advertise this thing. To say they underestimate the "break-in" period is an understatement. First of all, this isn't a leather boot. You don't "break" it in, as if it were leather that needed to be softened. It's got a slippery film on it. The thing that really gets my chi boiling about this mat is the lack of transparency from Manduka. Listen: the mat exudes a slippery film for some time. Nobody knows what it is. It might be whale oil, but Manduka won't say. I have a conspiracy theory that Manduka knows exactly how to make this mat sticky from the start but they can't do it without compromising their OEKO-TEX certification. This certification, by the way, means that there are 350 nasty chemicals that are not in the mat. Does it mean there are no nasty chemicals? No, just not the 350 known nasties. It could certainly have some unknown nasties, as chemical manufacturers are clever. But back to the topic at hand: Manduka is all like: "yeah, just sprinkle some sea salt on your mat and let it sit for a day in the sun." When I hear that this works for some people, I don't think they're doing downward dog on their mat. It just doesn't work. You have to really scrub the salt (coarser the better) into the mat thoroughly with pressure, for a few minutes. It should take about 5 minutes to scrub the whole mat. And then, guess what? It will be slick again in a day or two. I think what's happening is that the surface is exuding a film that continues for some period of time and you have to repeatedly scrub it off until it is gone. Perhaps leaving the mat out in the sun causes the film to evaporate faster: sure, give it a shot. Even though I am a tree-loving person, I even tried acetone on my mat. I'm pretty sure I just ruined my OEKO certification, but boy did that film disappear! But guess what? It was back a day later. I did a couple more salt scrubs and now it's usable. I anticipate it will get better with time (after all, this is what Manduka promises: the best way to "break in" the mat is [and I quote their website] "practice, practice, practice."). I find this advice duplicitous. I think they are preying on the yogi's belief that lots of practice cures all kinds of ailments, including a slippery mat. What I would like them to admit is that it has a slippery film on it that goes away with time and when you use it, your skin rubs off the film or your clothing absorbs some of the film until it is gone. Don't just tell me that "practice" will do it. There's a real patronizing of yogis here. Manduka, just give it to us straight and tell us what's really going on.If all this seems like too much to deal with for a consumer good, or you’re doing sweaty hot yoga, you can head straight to an open-cell natural rubber mat that is stickier from the start. Just don’t expect it to last as long, and it will probably smell bad for some time. If all else fails, just do some Savasana. Just breathe. Everything will be fine, I promise.
I have regularly practiced yoga for 7 years now, and have used several different kinds of mats during that time. I previously used a Kind Mat Bliss, which was amazing and super grippy, but very cumbersome since it couldn't roll up or travel easily. Some of my yoga teachers and fellow students recommended the Manduka mat, and I decided to give it a try. Though very expensive, I was confident that this would be a great mat for my practice. When I first received it, I was SO excited to try it out that I didn't salt it first, and as expected, I slipped all throughout that first class. It was awful -- so incredibly slippery, and I ended up injuring myself from combating the slipping of my hands and feet! Absolutely unacceptable. I am a pretty strong Yogi, but I can only imagine how unsafe this mat is for a beginner. As soon as I came home from that class, I followed the salting protocol instructions, and let it sit for just over 24 hrs, as directed. Today, I had my first yoga class since salting it, and I was confident that this time would be better. Though less slippery than pre-salting, it is still WAY too slippery for me to feel safe and confident about using it regularly for my yoga practice!I am really, really disappointed with this product, especially for how expensive it is!! And after spending $165+ for a Manduka yoga mat and carrying strap, I refuse to spend more money on more Manduka products just to have a safe yoga practice with their product.Sadly, I returning this mat for safety reasons; I can't risk re-injuring myself because I spend the class over-extending myself to compensate for slipping. I cannot recommend this product.
I bought this mat because the eko series mat I’ve been using for the last 12 years and have loved is pretty worn out and I need more cushion for my joints as I get older. The cushion is there, but I’m not sold on the traction and stability. It’s also super bulky, though I suppose there’s no way around that. I didn’t break it in with salt as I didn’t need to with my last mat, so perhaps doing that might help with the traction (though it sounds very messy and kind of destructive) and I’m not sure if my balance has just been off the past week or so, but I seem to have less stability in some poses on this mat. Putting a mat towel down has allowed me to make it through classes thus far, though I typically don’t use one and would prefer to practice without one. I can’t say I hate the mat, but I am not completely sold just yet and wondering if I would’ve been better off buying the mat from lululemon.
This pro mat I purchased is decidedly NOT sticky. I’m a novice yogi but wanted to invest in my practice and get my own mat to avoid the shared stinky mats at class. I went with Manduka as my gym also uses these sticky and lightweight mats. I made the grave mistake of going ‘pro’. This leaden beast burns more calories hauling to class than my 60 mins session and its slimy texture does not wash off, alcohol wipe off or hot water soak off. I’ve tried for a month of slowly slipping too deep onto my side angles. I give up and return to stinky co-op mats and will beg my gym to please invest in new ones. Just not Manduka.
So far so good! I was searching for a new mat, because my previous secondhand mat was absolutely falling apart! Finally took the plunge and got the Manduka Pro in the gorgeous Verve color. So far, I'm impressed. It sticks to the floor unlike any other mat (crucial in my Ashtanga practices!), but it's just cushy enough that I'm not dying in any yin practices or any poses where I'm on my knees. Easy to clean, and so gorgeous that I love just keeping it unrolled in my apartment.I'm holding back on 5 stars for now because, even after the Manduka-recommended salt rub, I'm still slipping and sliding. I did notice a marked difference after the salt treatment, so I'm convinced that, with a bit more practice time on the mat, it will break in!
This is the worst mat I’ve used! I wanted to love it so bad because the density is so good for my knees but whatever they use to keep it from sticking to the molds is not good for heavier people. I have salted and scrubbed this mat multiple times. I have used mat wash. I make sure I don’t use soap. I practice yoga 5 days a week. This may shows no signs or getting better. The more I use it, the more slick it gets. I want to be clear here. I’m not a sweater. I actually bought the yogitoes towel but it only works if you’re sweaty, if you’re not you slip on the towel more abruptly than the mat. I feel like no matter what, I’m fighting to stay in my pose. My calves and palms burn from the micro slip that is just constant and relentless. Don’t know if this is a weight ... MoreThis is the worst mat I’ve used!
