Great for starting lump wood charcoal in minutes. Being electrical you obviously have to be close to power or run an extension cord. Minor inconvenience for a chemical free fire starter.

Not useful
29 December 2022

This tool is not convenient at all. It has no clips to connect to the BBQ etc and the button has to be held down the entire time. Would be much more useful with a timer switch.

Unsure if as effective as intended

I’m not sure if I’m using it right?I tried to light some coles briquettes in my little kettle bbq and they just wouldn’t take at all.On some lump charcoal it worked a little better but I think a chimney and some fire lighters might be a better / faster option.I will keep playing around but I might have to return it

Worked 3 times
8 May 2022

Bought this for my new bbq adventures, used it 3 times, then it died and tripped my safety switch. Not sure if I had a dodgy unit or not but just returned it for a refund and grabbed some firelighters instead. Be aware it does take a while standing there waiting for your charcoal to ignite

Works well. No more time wasted with fuel sources

Used it a few times now and it works a treat for the Heat Bead and charcoalGreat for when heat dies down to much, you can crank it back up with this thing.Kills the odd weed near the BBQ too

a must have
12 December 2022

I bought this when I first got into BBQ smoking. It's a fantastic product and a must have for any beginners. However, the user manual embellishes the truth a little bit. To get your fuel started you need to have it on full blast maybe 1 or 2 mm away from the fuel source (as opposed to the 5cm recommended in the manual) and it definitely takes way longer than 60 seconds to get the fuel started the first time round. That being said, when I use it to fire up partially burnt coal or charcoal that is left over from a previous cook, it fires up almost instantly.

(24 reviews)

The Matador MECS-2005 Corded Charcoal Starter provides a quick and effective solution to ignite the charcoal and kindling for your next BBQ or fireplace when entertaining. No need for lighter fluid or chemical fire starters that can affect the environment or taste of your food. The charcoal starter will provide warmth up to 600°C in a few minutes and will ignite charcoal in around 60 seconds. Simply bunch up charcoal on one side of your BBQ, hold the charcoal starter close to the pile so the heating tip touches the charcoal while holding down the toggle switch. When the charcoal catches fire, slowly pull out of the flames while keeping it aimed at the same spot for at least 60 seconds. This product is intended for DIY use only.
