A great knife for winter camping!
25 January 2023

I read the reviews and decided to give this knife a try as an inexpensive tool for winter camping to be used mainly for splitting (baton) small diameter damp wood to get to the dry center to aid in starting a fire. Because it has a full tang, I felt it would be safer to baton (split) wood. I just got back from 3 nights and 4 days of winter camping in deep snow in the mountains with low temps in the single digits. The knife performed beyond my expectations. I beat on this knife splitting wood using the baton method. The blade stayed sharp, did not bend , and the plastic handle showed no wear and tear. My girlfriend used it to chop frozen snow to fit in the pot to melt for water for drinking and cooking.

Excellent product. I've been using it for my job as a warehouseman and driver. My employer is a small miller and granary so lots of other ancillary tasks fall under my purview. After two days of use I can give a good review as it's stood up to medium duty use with no trouble and by the way it seems to be built it will withstand heavy duty use well. My only gripe is with the sheath, which feels a bit flimsy. However, the price is very reasonable and the blade was sharp right out of the package.

I have been using knives since 1976 and even made some custom knives in the early 2000's. I also sharpen knives as a hobby so I think I'm definitely qualified to review this knife. For $20, this knife is probably the best deal out there for a 4" fixed blade. I have now bought 2 even though I really only need 1.Since Milwaukee doesn't list what the exact steel is, I assumed it would be a poor performer. I have used this knife several times a week for the last 4 months. Upon receipt it was pretty sharp with a surprisingly good secondary bevel, straight out of the box. I used my Ken Onion Work-sharp belt sharpener, followed the factory grind and went through the belts I have all the way to around 1200 grit. I then used a leather stropping belt with green compound. The knife was then very sharp and shaved arm hair effortlessly. What I was most impressed was when cutting printer paper at slow and fast rates, there wasn't even a hint of a minor burr anywhere on the blade (this generally means blade will also get dull fast, this was not the case). This blade just cuts effortlessly along the entire blade. About the easiest knife I have ever sharpened. Keep in mind I have a Wicked Edge Sharpener with all the bells and whistles, but just using the Ken Onion belt sharpener worked really well with very little effort or time. After using it one day to totally cut up about 140 boxes (20 minutes of non stop cutting), I was surprised the blade with still decent sharp. To bring it back to peak shaving sharpness, I just took a half dozen passes over the leather stropping belt on my Ken Onion Work-sharp and the blade was back to peak sharpness. I carry a Spiderco Para Military 2 in S30V steel but always use this for real cutting jobs when I have it handy. If you hand sharpen and strop your blades, this knife will be easier than most to bring it to peak sharpness and keep it there. To me, it seems to go from decent sharp to scary sharp when you strop it with compound. Lastly, I find the handle comfortable with reasonable grip, not sure if it would be overly slippery if you got blood on it when skinning an animal. There really isn't a traditional guard but the blade seems very stable in my big thick hands, not sure if my hand would slide down it if you used a stabbing motion. Lastly, the sheath is a nice way to protect the blade and can be used to carry it, but if you plan on taking it into the outdoors and using it in rugged environments in which you may take a bad fall but want to ensure your blade stays put and doesn't accidentally stab you or get lost, you will want a stronger sheath. Hope this helps...

Soft steel
17 November 2022

Bought this knife a while ago because it was $20 and I love Milwaukee products. Has some good aspects to it, has some bad. Some of the bad can double as good. For example; steel is extremely soft, probably the softest steel I've ever seen. I wondered if it was aluminum actually. I've kind of abused this knife so I've watched the edge fold and the tip bend very easily. But it's $20. With the steel being so soft, you can mess it up pretty easily but, you can also fix it very easily. Put a huge divet in the blade one day at work and I didn't have anything to sharpen it with on me but I was able to find a suitable rock and mostly fix it quite easily. As I said, the negative aspect can also be positive. Easy to mess up the blade, easy to fix. Surprisingly good beater knife

I acquired two of these for light outdoor work and to compare different sharpening techniques.I am curious about the steel used here. I reprofiled one of the knives and stropped it with Flexcut Gold on leather. After using it to carve and chop through scrap wood, I found it would still shave hair and chop through oranges and other soft fruit with little effort. My only knocks against it are the slick handle (wrap it, no big deal) and the sheath, which isn't much for retention. Finding or making a replacement wouldn't be difficult. If the handle on this thing ever breaks, I'm pretty sure I can keep it going. The best all around tool

I bought this knive four years ago and use it for everything. It is my tool, screwdriver, pry bar, can opener, insulation cutter, door panel opener, jack to lift something, just about anything. I love this thing. I am about to buy another as a back up just in case. You can’t beat the price or the strength of it. For a $30 tool. I will always buy this as long as I can find it.

This review is for the Milwaukee 4 in. Fixed Blade Knife Model # 48-22-1926, which I got a chance to check out.The 1926 is a "full tang" model, meaning that the blade/handle is all one piece of stainless steel, with the handle molded onto it. When the knife was delivered the package set on the front porch for more than an hour where the temperature was 10 degrees Fahrenheit - so I was able to test out the handle in cold weather w/o gloves. I found it to be quite usable - the handle warmed to my hand but wasn't slippery or too cold to pick up. The knife offers a lanyard hole in the end of the handle, handy for attaching to ladders and such. The knife offers a lanyard hole in the end of the handle, handy for attaching to ladders and such. There’s also a ridged thumb rest on the top of the blade, just in front of the handle, to allow you to put some pressure on the blade if needed. There's no indication (as far as I can determine) about the grade of steel used for the blade, just that it's "stainless"; whatever steel is used it does come pretty sharp right out of the package. I did some cutting on cardboard boxes and rope and twine and had no problems. That's about the extent of what I cut these days - I'm semi-retired and most of my chores are of the "honey-do" homeowner type of stuff. Slicing up an apple (no fun if using a dull knife) was as easily done as said. The knife comes with a hard plastic (nylon???) sheath; the blade is held in the sheath via friction. I was able to shake the knife out by inverting the rig and giving the sheath a few hard shakes, but I think that, in normal usage, the knife would be secure. The sheath easily fits onto my 2" tactical belt; the sheath has a "open" style mounting slot, so you can remove the sheath without having to remove the belt. The sheath gives a snug grip around my belt and I don't fear that it would come off unintentionally.I think the Milwaukee 1926 is an excellent value as sheath knives go; although the knife isn't made in the U.S., Milwaukee offers a limited lifetime warranty and Home Depot has a 90-day return policy.HTHRegards,Jim
