I have the 35 f1.4 AIS and this lens. This lens has far superior image quality than the MF version. You pay the price in size however but after looking at the images, you know it's worth it and that's what it all comes down to.A few things to note about this lens. It is a plastic body, so is prone to some damage if banged around too much.The lens is an AF-S G lens, so it will not work on MF bodies as the aperture defaults to f22 which won't be too useful.The AFS is the micro motor style instead of the ring so the AF is slow compared to the 24-70 f2.8. The focus throw is pretty short so this doesn't matter too much.A great performer on modern bodies although it's much bigger than previous Nikon 35mm primes.

After reading a tons of reviews I was a little doubtful about this lens. Some said, sharp and fast, othere said not so sharp and nothing special. But, after I tried this lens on my d610 and d810 camera, all I can said, it is amazing (at least my copy). Have several nikon lenses; 24,35,58,85.. and neither is better than the other - they are all extremely sharp, very fast, with excellent rendition. 35G from all of them for me personally has most beautiful colors. It is very compact and well balanced on camera. Weight is also optimal - not so heavy, not so light. If you prefer this focal lenght, this is absolutelly lens to go.

In these modern mirrorless days, where sharpness is the hype, this Nikkor 35mm f/1.4 can be a little disappointing. But, if you are looking for a 35mm lens that can render gorgeous images please look no further. True, this is not the sharpest lens at wide open aperture on the market, but the overall quality of the pictures, their contrast, their color rendering, and the classic 35mm distortion on them it’s absolutely worth the price. You are investing big bucks ( :/ ) on a premium (and “old”) lens, but this is what you will get: quality images, classic 35mm perspective, low light performance and creamy bokeh up close when needed. It was hard for me to make the financial decision, but I’m very happy with the results.

And sharpness is important to me too since I often make large exhibition prints. This lens is very sharp at the focal point for things like reportage and environmental portraits. The sharpness might fall off a bit in the corners wide open, but they're almost always going to be outside of the depth of field anyway. Stopping down to f/4 or f/5.6 produces very sharp corners with great contrast throughout the frame.So if you're reasonable and don't expect tack sharp corners at f/1.4 on a brick wall, this lens is actually quite sharp in practice. But the real strength of this lens is the look and rendering. The 35/1.4G produces beautiful results under a variety of conditions. The color is especially nice and the way it renders warm tones is really special.If you like the 35mm focal length, this lens definitely deserves a look. It's reliable, fast, durable and feels really nice. The lens has a bit more CA than I would like, but it's usually easily fixable and other lenses in this focal length aren't any better. Chromatic aberration is there at f1.4 and 1.6, not seen any at 2.2, all fixed in a click in Lightroom. Vignetting at 1.8 or wider just adds to the character, once again easily removed. Great lens, and an investment I hope the images will justify. Would encourage friends to try alternatives, and keep the lens metadata a secret just so I can be different.
I recently picked up the fairly new Tamron SP 35/1.4, and a well used Nikon 35/1.4g. On a D850, the Tamron seems sharper than the Nikon at large apertures and seems to have accurate AF - a very good lens.The Nikon 35/1.4 "matches" my 85 1.4g in a way that I like for people photography. I'm not sure how to describe this. Detailed but natural. So, I will trade a small bit of sharpness to get this characteristic.I had another 35/1.4g that came with a camera once. That lens did not wind up being a keeper for me. Maybe I did not spend enough time with it, but a quick check did not indicate that it was anything special. So, check any lens you get to be sure that it performs as expected.
Magnificent lens, superb sharpness, even wide open. As a photographer, I have owned more than 40 Nikon lenses over the past 40 years and this is easily one of the best. it is a little bigger and heavier than my older manual focus version.

Focus is quick, though not the quickest, focus accuracy is perfect with little hunting even in low light, build quality is fantastic assuming composite materials don't offend you (there's plenty of precision machined, expensive metal below the outside covering). Balance and feel on the camera is perfect and it's spent an inordinate amount of time mounted to my D800e as it truly is an ideal focal length for everyday shooting in all sorts of situations/environments. Price is prohibitive but if you what/need a fast 35mm and can justify the price, neither you nor your clients will be disappointed. There are certainly less expensive options available in this focal length but in all my many years of shooting with Nikon products I've never had to return a Nikkor lens nor has one ever let me down. Thus I stay loyal to Nikkor lens even at the high prices they command. I believe camera bodies to be visitors, while glass is family and purchase accordingly; this lens is as good a place to put your money as any If you love Nikkors's 85mm F1.4 G (I do) then look at this lens as its 35mm little brother, it's easily as good and certainly worthy of the investment. So stop reading and procrastinating and make the jump, I have and am not the least bit sorry I did!!! As always I highly recommend buying from B&H, my favorite retailers of many, many years.
