The 400 FL takes all the TCs so well that one shouldn't hesitate to use them, even wide-open. The attached photo with the bison was taken with the TC20e-III wide-open with a monopod.I've used the 200-500mmm f/5.6. It's a fine lens and punches above its class. But you won't be able to take the kind of top-tier photos that you can take with the 400 FL. Which is why the 200-500 is $1200 and the 400 FL is 10x that.The price is the only negative about the 400 FL.

You could buy the Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S for $3000, And the Nikon NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S for $4300. For $7300 you get two lenses that perform about 50% worse in early morning blue light situations not as gorgeous of bokeh have to carry two lenses. On the other hand, you could spend $13000 on this world class lens and have unstoppable low light performance. insanely tack sharp images. and the versatility of having basically 2 lenses in 1 lens. personally, I think you should just pull out that platinum card and pull the trigger on this legendary lens. If you do, just be warned, other photographers may spontaneously begin to babble at you.

Best 400mm, f2.8 ever!It could be perfect if: The documentation was abysmal; if the front objective was threaded (I've lost a couple of lenses in Yellowstone due to sulphur mist on the lens); button location is not great when hand holding.This is an incredible lens!

There's a reason this lens is so expensive. If you need the best, and this lens is long enough, it will give amazing results. And the built in TC is great; being able to switch distance on the fly is amazing for sports (I mostly use it for outdoor soccer).But this lens is overkill if you aren't really picky. And while this iteration is a vast improvement over previous versions, nobody would call this either small or light.

I received the lens this week and decided to adjust the Auto Fine Tune with my cameras. My D850's required +18 correction, and my D5 was at +15 to get the focus relatively sharp. Without the corrections, it was extremely soft, so make sure you take the time to check it with your cameras and make the adjustments to be happy with the sharpness.Today was my first time using the lens. It is an overall improvement in engineering from previous prime's and it performed as such today during the two baseball games. I have been editing the final images for the past couple hours and have been satisfied with the results for my first outing with the lens. I elected to shoot with the D850 today so that I would have the FX format at 400mm and also able to instantly switch to DX to get that 600mm 2.8 reach when needed. For me, at the college field, it worked out perfectly. I shot the two games with a monopod and VR Sport mode.In regards to final sharpness results, I can't say that it appears that much if any sharper than other Nikon telephotos like the 300mm 2.8 but it does seem to render a bit more detail in the image. Today I only shot at 2.8 all day, so can't comment on how it performs at F4 or F8, since I never shoot at those stops when shooting sports. In regards to auto focus speed, maybe a bit faster than the other Nikon Prime's, but not sure you will notice a big difference. I will say I never experienced an episode of the lens having to hunt for the subject to lock onto focus. The biggest improvement I seemed to have noticed over some of the other Nikon Prime's is how fast the background drops out when shooting sports, and the magical creamy appearance of the backgrounds. This is extremely helpful in sports photography since most of the backgrounds are full of distractions.I would recommend this lens to a friend, especially if you are a pro or serious sports photographer and can justify the cost. If you are not a an avid sports photographer, then you would most likely never notice a difference in speed or sharpness from it's previous brother the Nikon 400mm 2.8 which can be purchased at about half the price.
Purchased for Birds, especially hummingbirds - not a pro but someone with a higher budget for hobby. $14K doesn't all of a sudden make me a pro but I feel better psychologically. The lens is heavy and bulky and a bit soft at f2.8 the teleconverter doesn't seem to affect the resolution. I seem to get the sharpest image at around f5.6 to f7. Focus is very fast but does have trouble focusing back to closer distance which I fixed with focus recall on Z8. Overall happy with the purchase but don't expect magic.
Of course this 400/2.8 is optically great, as would be expected based on Nikon's prior F mount 400/2.8's and numerous reviews of this lens.However, the greatest advance for me (also noted by other reviewers) is its's versatility:1. I hesitated for a long time to buy due to the cost. Now that I am using it I can't say enough good about it. I use it for wildlife photography and video, including birds. With the 2x Z teleconverter the image quality remains high, even with the internal 1.4x engaged for a total of 1120mm. Highly recommended for outdoor sports and wildlife.
This is by far the best and most versatile telephoto lens I have ever used. It is optically better than the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 FL but weighs 2 pounds less, rendering it handholdable for short periods; the rest of the time it is held snag against my body by its native lens strap. It works very well with the built in 1.4TC, which renders it 560mm f/4, and an external 2TC which turns it into 800mm f/5.6. Engaging the internal 1.TC yields a whopping 1120mm f/8. Handholding this latter combo led to some motion blur which I was able to eliminate in post with Topaz Sharpen AI. I love this lens; it is superb.
First thing you notice - it's light. It's *very* light - you can easily hand hold for long periods, the balance is perfect. Next thing you notice is that the autofocus is dead silent and fast - and accurate (on a Z9 at least) even when wide open. Images snap into focus without motor noise, and seem to be spot on. Bokeh is smooth. Did a decent job shooting on water with sun directly overhead (better than other glass) - nothing weird, just the inevitable 'flatness'. IQ even with the TC seems excellent, physically though the TC toggle is a slight stretch - I'm sure I'll get used to it, eventually. Until then, I determine if I'm in 400/560mm by looking at the aperture in the EVF (assuming you're shooting wide open). New travel case seems okay - it'll look good on the shelf with all the rest, I'm sure... Overall, a very expensive lens, but if weight, IQ, accurate, fast, and silent autofocus, and a 400 f/2.8 and a 560 f/4 in the same lens are important, you won't go wrong with this piece of glass. Looking forward to comparing the IQ with the eventual 600 f/4 - but it may be too late by then - the flexibility of also having a 400mm lens at the same time will be hard to beat, even if you gain an extra 40mm.
