Getting Dirac Live with the receiver was the main reason I got this receiver. It's some of the best room calibration you can get. Other receiver's Denon and Marantz make you pay almost 500 for all the software with everything you can do with those receiver's. I just recently got a umik-1 from minidsp and also have watched a few YouTube videos on Dirac Live. So interested in seeing how much better it will sound. But really with just the setup mic and Dirac Live it has blown me away how good it sounds. There is a clicking noise sometimes with protecting the amp it makes occasionally that sounds the same as when turning it on but it's not a deal breaker for me.This really has been a great purchase for me so far and hoping to get a new 4k tv with 4k 120hz so I can play Xbox Series X and PS5. But so far on my LG C8 the games picture and frame rates have been great. So pleased with this purchase. You can't get a better deal.

Picked this up on sales at Best Buy for $300 off. Shipped directly to me. I was a little disappointed in the shipping. Best Buy used UPS and UPS said they tried to deliver it which was not true. Long story short, I got it a few days late. The receiver itself is massive. This will be my 3rd Onkyo receiver in the last 18 years. I upgraded to this one for the addition of ATMOS height speakers. Setup is easy. The inclusion of Dirac is definitely a plus. Although I never had an issue with Onkyo's proprietary system, Dirac is better. The only deficiencies I see in this receiver are the remote, which is small and cheap and the fact that it doesn't have 2 separate channel subwoofer outs. There are dual Subwoofer outs, but they are exactly the same signal instead of being left and right channels like on some other high end receivers. Not a deal breaker but it still would have been nice. Other than that, for the money, this is a great, feature packed receiver.

On top of that, it’s not even free! Like c’mon seriously?! You still have to pay even more for what the Denon x3800h costs where as this beautiful RZ50 has it built right in for free straight out of the box ready to rock and roll. Generally, I’d say this is a good AVR. But it has some serious flaws when it comes to the Dirac software. If you change just about any setting, including your listening mode, such as multi-channel stereo, etc., poof, Dirac disappears. This goes for many other settings as well. That is made even worse because you can’t just reapply it. You have do your measurements all over again. Plus, you’re required to use an app to use Dirac. Why isn’t it built into the AVR?Also, the build quality on this particular unit was lacking. The front tray that folds down didn’t fold back up to a flush position. It just hung open. And the two selection knobs on the left were pretty cheap plastic. The remote was a little cramped, but acceptable. It got the job done. The sound quality ... MoreGenerally, I’d say this is a good AVR. It got the job done. The sound quality and power was quite good, as well as having a good front panel display and OSD. But when you’re paying a premium on the unit to use Dirac, it had better be worth it, and it certainly was not.TL;DRIf you’re buying this unit without intending to use Dirac, great, it could work for you. If you want to use Dirac, look somewhere else.
I purchased the RZ50 after hearing so many good reviews online and coming from using an RZ830 I was really positive to hear the RZ50 was now orderable in the UK after what had happened to Onkyo. I really wanted another Onkyo as I've always loved the sound Onkyo AVRs produce.Once received and setting it up, the RZ50 sounded fantastic. It comes with Dirac Live built in which is a bonus and I have to say Dirac is the real deal. You can also customise the house curve and once I added the Harman curve it really sounds good and there is a strong sound presence. However, it doesn't quite feel polished compared to my old RZ830. It's practically the same AVR but just with Dirac and HDMI 2.1 ports. It's practically the same AVR but just with Dirac and HDMI 2.1 ports. It's advertised as a 9.2 channel receiver but the subwoofer outputs are not independent of each other like what you get on Denon AVRs, so it's the same signal split in two. Which means I can't eq my two subwoofers which means I need to get another device like a minidsp to eq them. There is no sign of Dirac Live Bass Control coming to this so if you have more than 1 sub this AVR may not be right for you. But if you are only ever going to be running one sub then it's no big deal.My other gripe is that it doesn't include some of the nice features that Denon includes like Dynamic EQ so unfortunately for me, I ended up returning the receiver and will look at swapping it for a Denon X3800H. Just feels that Denon is slightly ahead of the game here, but it's not to say the RZ50 is a bad receiver, it's not. If you can get away with the issues I have then you won't be disappointed.
Great receiver! Had been running a Onkyo nr-818 for close to a decade now and the time finally came for an upgrade. Been difficult finding this model in-stock but I jumped at it when the BB website said add to cart.Setup was a breeze, and the calibration results with Dirac were awesome. You need an internet connection and the Onkyo app installed on your smart phone to start the calibration. Otherwise you can use the still effective Audyssey setup.I plan on adding ATMOS speakers down the line however I’m enjoying being able to use my surround back speakers again. My old receivers back surround didn’t work right so the speakers have been boxed up until now.Sound wise this receiver is great also. Two channel listening has great presentation and sounds more like the audio is coming from the wall my speakers rest at as apposed to just the middle sweet spot. 7 channel mix for movies is spot on.Video wise no complaints but I haven’t had a chance to try anything 4k as of yet. Running a BenQ 1080p projector, but the colors and overall picture looks great.I love that AirPlay 2 is built in so I don’t need to have my Apple TV to stream music.Hands down best receiver I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to get Atmos and a 4k project hooked up to it!
Best Buy wasn't able to figure out how to use it to give me Atmos. And now tell me I have to order a different receiver (the third one so far-- I ordered what they tell me I need for my installation which has been wrong over and over again). And also that ceiling speakers have to be removed and holes left in the ceiling and speakers placed in different locations. And that I'll have to pay to fix the holes left in the ceiling. My home theater installation will take at least six months and at least 10 visits to complete. And the first installer who was the installation manager never heard of protector hotspots or knew how to prevent them. And probably 10 times I've scheduled to have someone tell me how it should be done right and I just get a call the day before that says they don't know yet and they cancel and never get back to me.
I purchased the AV on 09/22 and have mixed feelings about it. On the positive side, the sound quality is great, and the UI is easy to navigate and understand. Setting it up was a breeze as well. However, there are some frustrating issues that I have encountered.Firstly, the Dirac feature can be complicated if you're not familiar with it. It took some time to figure out how to properly utilize it. Additionally, while the AV boasts a lot of inputs, I've experienced frequent disconnections, with the units disconnecting about half of the time. Changing inputs also seems to be a hassle, as the system tends to revert back to the previous input instead of staying on the selected input.Furthermore, I've experienced unexpected occurrences where the sound and image ... MoreI purchased the AV on 09/22 and have mixed feelings about it. Changing inputs also seems to be a hassle, as the system tends to revert back to the previous input instead of staying on the selected input.Furthermore, I've experienced unexpected occurrences where the sound and image suddenly cut out without any apparent reason. But the most frustrating issue is that the system randomly shuts off, which is highly inconvenient and disruptive to my listening experience.Overall, while the AV has some strong points such as great sound and an easy-to-use UI, the frequent disconnections, input switching problems, sudden sound and image issues, and random system shut-offs have been significant downsides. It has been disappointing to encounter these issues with a product that I had high expectations for. I hope the manufacturer can address these problems in future updates to improve the overall performance and reliability of the AV.
I was lucky enough to snag this when it became available again. I purchased this to replace a Yamaha RX-V6A which ended up being pretty big step up.The main thing I wanted out of this received was the Dirac Live and it works very well. It takes some time to setup and fortunately I have the UMIC mic for use to calibrate and used my laptop to do the calibration. I had a lot of frustrations with the IOS app and the included mic and gave up. This definitely seems to need some work and unfortunately you can’t seem to use the UMIC mic with the IOS app. Either way prepare to spend at least an hour setting up Dirac and also prepare to do some follow-up calibration on cross overs and volume levels for each speaker. Once you fine tune all of that things really being to settle in and show the value of this received.I also tested this with VRR on the PS5 and it works flawlessly. You need to adjust the HDMI inputs, at least in my case, to support 8K enhanced, I you miss this step you will not be able to use all the PS5 4K features. The remote on this isn’t as good as the Yamaha. There are several single press options that existed on the Yamaha that simply are not there on the Onkyo such as direct selection of Audio modes via a push button. You have to cycle through options and I find that painful.Bottom line is that the audio quality and Dirac are noticeable and worth the extra $$$. If you don’t care about Dirac then I’d suggest other options however.
I was not disappointed. All specs were excellent. The user interface was a great improvement over the Denon, Onkyo and Yamaha receivers I have used recently. Tip: when moving from 2 to 4 height speakers the connection of back surround will change. The sound quality left nothing else to be desired, excellent. The preamp outs for all channels added flexibility for experimenting with external homemade speakers, equalizers and analog amps. Loved the DIRAC calibration which used the computing power of a cellphone. I will mention one other unique issue I had. I was using 2 passive subwoofers with my choice of full range stereo amps.
