Better Than An Internal Microphone!!

I changed my mind about this microphone and would recommend this product to someone looking for a microphone that will improve the recording of your audio for a decent price. It's not the most expensive microphone available, but it is accomplishing the task it was designed to do, at least for me. I do have the option of adjusting the volume on my camera, but have not found that to be necessary so far. Chatter and noise is not eliminated, which is not expected at a sporting event, but it seems to be less of a distraction than before because of the directional properties of the microphone. The unit comes with a convenient attachment for a camera hot shoe, along with the windscreen (not the best, but better than nothing) and a dual 3.5mm plug for connecting to the microphone and the input jack of my camera. There is also an optional USB-C port for connection to mobile devices or computer, but the cable is not supplied for that type of application. I registered this product online, and got the warranty extended to two years at no cost. I am very pleased with the purchase.

I bought a cheap deadcat for £13 from Amazon as opposed to the Rode's overpriced one.

Microphone performs as much as I shouldn't be. So this microphone is one of those microphones that works best as a 'voice-over' mic first. (Just my opinion). I would say it would be a great microphone as a vlog Microphone BUT if you are using it as a mic for a camera that has a pretty powerful pre-amp or very good gain adjustment setting for a plugged in mic. I could see this working very very well if used with any audio recorder. So this microphone can connect to any device via Usb-C or 3.5mm plug. It is said this microphone could plug into a device with the RODE CENTRAL app/program installed onto it. With that app you can change a few settings for how this microphone performs. What you need to know when it comes to that is this microphone doesn't save these settings within itself. The settings you change for this microphone only changes for that device...not this mic itself.....within itself. For example.... You have a laptop and a computer with the rode Central app freshly installed. You plug this microphone into your laptop and go into the RODE CENTRAL program to make some adjustments. This adjustments will only work on this microphone when you plug it into your laptop.Now.....You take your computer and plug this microphone into it. You will notice those settings you've adjusted on your laptop did not translate to your computer. You'll have to make those settings again on that computer.Now... I'llYou have a GoPro that you want to use this microphone with to vlog. Those settings you've made with your computer and laptop will not be the microphone's settings. When this microphone is plugged into any device that doesn't have that RODE CENTRAL app/program installed onto it, this camera will function as a basic microphone that sounds really really good. I haven't used this camera with any mic settings change yet and it sounds really good. I'll probably make a very short video just letting you guys hear this microphone without any setting changes. I definitely recommend it. It can be slid forward and back allowing you to better your chances to keep this mic out of frame if you need to. This Rode Video NTG mount is very study also and keeps your audio quiet from shaking sounds when you are using this for vlogging or anything else that will make a camera/microphone shake. The more I write the more I want to make a video on this. I guess I'll make a video on it....In the meantime......But it if you like everything I wrote here about it!

This saves your bacon in so many ways

Most of my video work is getting impromptu interviews in very noisy situations. Up to now, I had to get the subject to hold a voice recorder and sync the tracks later. It worked very well but required extra steps at both ends. With this mic, so long as the source of the worst ambient noise is not directly in front of you, one can get a pretty clear and easy to understand interview with just enough ambient noise to maintain the sense of the event. Its several less steps than the previous method. Also setting it up to record 2 tracks, one at -20 and one at zero also saves you from clipped audio tracks. All you have to remember is, have your back to the main source of undesired audio like PA speakers or a screaming crowd. Truly fantastic microphone... until it bricks itself
22 October 2022

This microphone is normally fantastic. I've been using it for work, connected to my computer, for the past 8 months, since purchasing it from B&H (now it's outside the return window). Its Achilles heel is the battery, which is not user-serviceable. I knew this going in, and decided to purchase anyway for the following reasons:1) I'm not using this in a mobile setting, connected to a camera. It's going to be plugged into a computer via USB whenever in use, so if the battery life degrades over time I wouldn't care.2) Rode offers a 10-year warranty (which covers battery replacement) if you register your purchase (from an authorized reseller such as B&H) with them. Which I did.Unfortunately the battery comes into play in another crucial way. When connected to a USB host device (such as my computer), the onboard power button does nothing -- it only works when being powered off battery. So when plugged in via USB, the microphone powers on automatically when the host device is on and communicating, and off when the host device turns off. This logic in the microphone's firmware is buggy, and it apparently can rarely (but if you're using it for a while you may eventually run into it at which point you're hosed) get into a bad state where it will stay on no matter what, and be non-communicative over USB, until the battery dies (which can take days).Because there is this battery, and it is not removable, and there is no reset button/hole or anything, once the microphone is in this state it's effectively bricked until the battery dies.Search reddit's r/rode subreddit for posts about videomic ntg and blinking/flashing green, you'll see several reports of this. Now, Rode has graciously offered to cover my return shipping (not normally covered), and my interactions with them have been fantastic so far, so props where it's due. But if this happens again, I'll have to look for something else. If I can't rely on it working, it doesn't matter how good its audio quality is.BTW if you're looking for a microphone just for home video conferencing like I was, you might want to consider the Rode VideoMic GO II, which B&H also sells. I have no experience with it myself, but it seems to have good enough audio quality (not as good as NTG but for indoor video conferencing where you'll be close enough to the mic, there'll be less noise, and the audio will be compressed by the software anyway, it may not matter), no hardware filter control buttons like the NTG has (but can still be done in Rode's software on Windows/Mac, doesn't matter for me I wasn't using these filters on my NTG anyway), and most importantly it has no battery. So even if the GO II had the same firmware issue (for which I have no evidence for or against), at least you could unplug it and plug it back in.

Versatile

I bought this as an upgrade to the VideoMicro (I am reviewing the VideoMic GO II, actually two different lines of product). My primary motivation for getting this mic is that it has a super cardioid instead of the cardioid of the VideoMicro. This means the VideoMic GO II has a pickup pattern of both front AND back, which is more ideal for run and gun interview style shooting. The shock absorber mount is an upgrade too, having two points of mounting, instead of one in the VideoMicro. This fixes the annoyance where the audio cable coming out of the back of the mic will pull the mic downward.Overall, the sound quality is actually very similar between the two mics, but I guess with VideoMic GO II, there is also the added versability (and electronic complexity) of ... MoreI bought this as an upgrade to the VideoMicro (I am reviewing the VideoMic GO II, actually two different lines of product). For its price, it is a great step up from the on camera mics, which while being stereo on my Canon R6, pick up a lot more noise from the camera.

Versatile Mic, Worthy Upgrade Over Rode Video Micro
1 May 2023

I started with the Micro, but soon desired some of the features found in this shotgun mic. I felt this version was a good balance between the micro and the more expensive NTG/Pro versions. I love the improved shockmount, a single mount is annoying since the mic bounces a lot with one mount. I also dig how versatile this mic is. I can use it on my cams or plug it into my computer for voiceovers. The pickup is much improved over the Micro, sound is more full, and overall I wish I had just started with this mic instead. It handles close and somewhat far audio pickup well, fulfilling pretty much all of my nearfield audio needs. I mostly use the 3.5mm input, but the USB output offers more granular control via RodeCentral. I like that's powered by USB/3.5mm, battery based mic's run the risk of running out at inopportune times. The only con is that I wish they'd provided the nicer coiled 3.5mm cable found in the Micro, but the supplied cable is fine.

I primarily use it as a mic for my PC, so I don't have to wear a headset. But I also needed it mounted just over 2 feet away, 80 degrees to my right, and for it to minimize picking up sound from my speakers. So far I'd say it works quite well. My voice comes through clear at normal speaking volume, while picking up the tiniest bit of background noise from my speakers. Game audio is very distant sounding, and not intrusive in the mix. The audio is clear and my voice is the focal point of the playback. I haven't tried yet, but I bet I can tune the mic with the RODE software to help even more with the background noise.I also wanted this mic in the off chance I want to use it with my Fuji camera. I tested video recording and the audio is much more directional than the normal mic, focusing the audio input where the lens is pointing, of course. My use case is amateur and weird, but overall very happy with the performance of this $99 mic.

What a great sounding and versatile microphone. I tend to over research every purchase to get the best value. After hours of reading and watching reviews on the best mics for all around use, like podcasting, voiceovers, video, and even teams meetings, this mic stood out. Just last week, I used it to record an audio commentary for a college course and then slapped it on my Sony A7III for some video. Audio is crisp and clean, doing a great job keeping the noise to a minimum, even in my echo chamber of an office/bedroom. The best part (for me) is I didn’t have to buy an audio input for an XLR cable as this is a USB mic… technically. Meaning it sounds just as good as an XLR mic IMO. Literally plug and play. Another standout feature is the gain wheel on the rear. What a ... MoreWhat a great sounding and versatile microphone. I tend to over research every purchase to get the best value. I only docked it a point due to its price. But honestly, the features and value justifies it.
