Rokinon 24mm T1.5 Cine DS OverviewUtilizing a multi-layer coating process for consistent color rendition from lens to lens the Rokinon 24mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens answers the challenge of assembling a set of lenses over time. The lens comes in a Micro Four Thirds Mount and features industry standard geared focus and iris rings that share common position with other Rokinon Cine DS lenses. To aid focus pullers who have to work both sides of the lens, the aperture and focus scales are marked on both sides of the lens. This 24mm lens produces a 47.6° FOV when used with micro four thirds cameras. Hybrid aspherical lenses render sharply defined images with a minimum of distortion and chromatic aberrations, with a minimum focus distance of just under 10" from the lens. A removable petal shaped lens hood provides flare protection when shooting without a matte box, the lenses threaded front accepts a 77mm filter ring. Please note that some cameras may require that Shutter Lock be disengaged when using this lens.

If you currently shoot the Canon or Nikon prime lenses, you are in for an upgrade at 1/4 the price. This lens is extremely sharp edge to edge, virtually no halos. The boca is more desirable than any other lens we have seen for under $25K. If you didn't know it you would use the lens then watch the video and think you were filming on a lens costing thousands more. At T1.5 it is completely sharp and amazing. Very solid. Very well built. It works great for stills as well, sharper, better that our Canon RF primes 100% of the time. I love Canon Products but this stomps them in the Cine lens department and for video, the USM lenses are lack luster at best. Give it a shot, you will thank me and B&H.

I LOVE this lens. Overall, it's great for really hands-on filming where you're able to move around a bit and get a great tight angle on your subject, and to pull focus to exactly where you want it. The low aperture allows you a ton of latitude with depth of focus, and allows images to really bloom with light. I've shot several concert videos with it since I got it, and it's a total joy every time.Pros:- the image just looks beautiful. I find my a6300 sometimes gives overly detailed, cold-feeling pictures, and the amount of light this lens lets in really helps with that. At 1.5 or 2.8, it's sharp enough, but not, like, TOO sharp.- the build quality is crazy good for a "cheap" lens. All metal... very heavy. But good.- the focus ring is really gradual, so pulling manual focus is really, really satisfying and very accurate. At a super low aperture, you can achieve some incredible depth of field stuff, even if you're not very experienced (I'm not). Its limitations:- fixed focal length. The lens is great if you're trying to shoot a single subject, so long as you have some room to move closer or further away. It's really amazing for getting intimate shots at interesting angles.- manual zoom. If you don't want to have to deal with focusing your shot, don't get this.- no in-lens stabilization. It's a telephoto with no OSS, so you're going to have a little jitter if you're shooting handheld.- manual, fluid aperture. This is actually a selling point, but I find it very easy to accidentally nudge the aperture when I'm focusing. And with a continuous, fluid range from 1.5 to 22, you have to actually lean over and check the side of the lens to figure out if you're at the aperture you want.- the lens is heavy and bulky, so a light gimbal or steadycam might have trouble with it.

Editors note, they do have an extremely narrow throw, and the initial run had the focal gears at random distances up and down the lens. They however have since rectified this and the gears are all at exact distances from the base of the lens.In Closing; do it, just buy the Rokinons, you're wallet will thank you.

I love my Rokinon lenses and buying them from B&H meant I didn't have to worry about shipping issues, or quality upon arrival. For the lenses, the quality is cinema level, the bokeh is beautiful, and the focus is sharp and crisp. I would definetely go with these to get film level cinematic shots for a decent price. I got these to go with my Canon T7i, which they work perfect with, and I'm gonna continue using them when I upgrade my body to a Blackmagic 6k camera.
I bought this as my introduction into Cine style lenses, and overall I think it was a great investment. The lens has nice weight to it, and fluid focus/aperture rings. It's a little soft when wide open, but that gives a nice "artsy" look sometimes. At 85MM it's a nice portrait/telephoto focal length. One large flaw, the minimal focusing distance. It's around 3 feet, and that could make certain compositions difficult, but at the price, that's a small take away.
I've been shooting Rokinon for 6 years now. I learned film and photography on them, my first lens being the cine 35mm. When I saw an upgraded model for a similar price, I was eager to pick one up. Build quality is MUCH better on these DSX's. The metal housing is much more durable and confident that the old plastic model. The focus and aperture rings are smooth and that extra blade gives some even prettier bokeh. I haven't put enough time into yet but I'm waiting to see how sharp it is. A common problem with the Rokinon cines is that though they are fast, they are very soft. I'm hoping this newer line fixed that problem.
Every now and then I get impressed with a bit of gear. I am impressed with this mattebox.I shoot in the wind, rain, snow. I lug gear on my back, on a pack animal and in my hand. Swamp, desert, rain forest, glacier, and studio. This matte box scores home runs in weight, ruggedness, compactness, versatility, and it actually blocks the un-wanted light.Filter change and access is reliable and quick. Today the snowflakes (water type) were working hard to attach themselves to the lens, the French flags made it difficult for them.If you need a tax deduction, buy several. If you want a versatile and effective matte box where ROI rules this is the one.
Great options for beginners or people starting over and are on a budget. This prime 50 can really be used to achieve great looking images. Too often, people attempt to compare the Rokinon line to higher end cine glass. That should not be, or at least, higher end productions do not want to compromise on breathing, bokeh, coating, minimum focus distance etc. Use these lenses and move on if you decide to, but these lenses show great what's in front of them. Put something great in front of them and nearly anyone who knows what they're doing can make the image look great. These lenses from the Rokinon line were marketed to entry level filmmakers so essentially they're not suppose to be compared to higher end cinema prime lenses.
I have used large format lenses (Schneider, Nikkor, Rodenstock) for 35 years on my large format cameras. For my digital SLR Canon I used Canon L series lenses. For these latter, the aperture would only shut down once the shutter release was depressed, never showing the actual depth of field. But these Rokinon Cine lenses work just like large format lenses on the SLR which is fantastic. I am loving the all-manual focus and aperture ring, plus the glass is very high quality.
I got this with the kit and hardly ever used the 24mm, if at all. And I mean that... so took it out of my case today and could barely adjust focus as the ring was very stiff and wasn't able to focus properly at distance. The kit overall is solid and I think this lens has potential but each lens I own from rokinon has its own little tick. I'm in shock something like this could happen to a lens that has rarely been touch. Unacceptable. Again, Rokinon has done me pretty well but be aware. I'm not sure if I want to buy from rokinon again and I'm frustrated. Scared something like this will happen again.
