A lot of storage for a low price.

I have 4 of these 4TB USB 3.1 drives, 3 of which are Western Digital. They all work fine, probably because they've never been moved from the same spot on my desk. When packed up for a trip, all the banging around can cause problems, since they are mechanical drives. If you were to remove your mechanical system drive from your desktop for use in a dock, all that handling could cause you a lot of grief; that's the nature of the beast when those heads come crashing down on the platter(s), no matter how well they're "parked". Anyway, this particular drive has performed without a flaw. After buying longer USB 3.1 cables, all my portables haven't moved from their original placement. Disappointed! Not as advertised on BestBuy!

Per BestBuy product information, this external drive come with Toolkit backup software. That’s not true!Not only this does not include the Toolkit software, but even if you download and install it from Seagate website, the back up features on App will not work.I even had to contact Seagate technical support and they confirmed that this is not compatible with Toolkit app and suggested to either return and replace it with other models or just drag and drop the files!!

Good reliable USB 3 hard drive that does not require a separate power supply.

There's not much to say really, it's a hard drive and it works. I have three of these identical units and use them for archiving photos along with nine other drives of various makes. In ten years I have had two drive failures, both total losses, but neither drive was one of these Maxtors. I surface scan the drives before use and have never seen defects right out of the box. The drive is powered via the USB connection, so a separate PSU is not needed, which is convenient. Note that two of my Maxtors used the standard MBR (Master Boot Record) type file table, the latest one came formatted with GPT. Both of these systems will work on modern PCs, but the newer GPT will not be readable by older machines running, for instance, Windows XP.

One guy stated that it took an hour and a half to move 80 gb, but for me it took an hour and fifteen minutes to move 160 gb. He was probably using a USB 2.0 port, which transfers data slower. Make sure the port your using is actually a USB 3.0 port. My laptop, for instance, has two 3.0 ports on the left and one 2.0 port on the right. I copied all the documents and photographs from two 1tb Elements external drives where the lead input was going faulty. I updated the drivers, reformatted the disk, plugged it into the rear I/O and still, it refused to go anywhere beyond 18 MB/s, and that's if I was lucky. Sure, it would ramp up to a speed I thought was admirable at first, only to plummet downward after a moment or two. This drive drew out the task of backing up my HDD from what I presumed would be an hour-long affair into 6+ hours. The thing looks and functions like a repurposed laptop HDD from a bygone era. If the READ speeds are to be believed, this could fit the bill for someone whose internal storage is dwindling or needs to transport some very large files across the office for a meeting or something. This 14TB expansion external disk drive Is perfect for my needs. I use it for my system backup destination drive on a Windows 10 computer. Except for this drive, my system has a total of 4 drives. My C: drive is a 1 TB SSD, F: drive is a 2 TB HDD, G: drive is an external 8 TB HDD and R: drive is a 4 TB HDD. That is a total of 15 TB OF SSD/HDD storage. These drives are nowhere near at capacity and have approximately 9 TB used space. So the 14 TB expansion external disk drive has ample space to backup all of my other drives. It interfaces to either a Mac or PC via a USB 3.0 port. The drive is originally formatted to exFAT32 at the factory in order to work with either a Mac or PC right out of the box. I wasn’t going to use the drive with a Mac and so I did what I have described. I’ve performed several full and incremental backups with this drive via USB 3.0 and it has worked flawlessly so far. I have yet to perform a restore from my backups and once I do, I’ll be able to enjoy the performance and versatility of the drive. I recommend this drive to everyone whom are looking to just expand the storage for their system or do backups as I do.
