Core unit size issues

Seems that Shimoda cater to casual photographers and landscape photographers only. A basic wildlife kit would include decent sized tele lenses and probably a spare body and a couple (or at least one) wide lens, plus bits and pieces. The Large DSLR core unit is smaller than my old LowePro internals and barely holds a single body, 70-200 zoom and two wide lenses, plus batteries, cards, and a bit of space for a strobe/flash.No way can it handle a wildlife lens (300mm f2.8 or longer) and all the other stuff. It doesn't help that Shimoda don't provide enough realistic images to compare inserts.I would suggest that if you are looking at getting an insert, go up one size. This Large core unit I would consider Medium.Padding is much thinner but is OK I guess. I ... MoreSeems that Shimoda cater to casual photographers and landscape photographers only. I would like to have had, for the rather high price, a couple of additional dividers that would fit the full length of the core unit. I'll probably end up making my own to get it to fit like I want.

Divider and width issues

I have to agree with the review posted by Kelvin, this ICU has size issues if you want to carry a 70-200 or larger lens attached to a body. None of the included dividers span the length of the unit, or are long enough for a Z8 or Z7ii with 70-200 2.8 S attached, and of course it's even worse with the 400 4.5 S. That's a big disappointment for action and wildlife shooters. The side access is a great idea, but the ICU is not wide enough for the Z8 or Z7ii with a 70-200 2.8 S (or longer) attached, so that negates the whole feature for action and wildlife shooters. I'm really surprised there are so many positive reviews for this item. It needs to be about 2 inches wider and come with several more dividers and also longer dividers.

Fits Explore 35 V2

I originally had the medium and small DSLR Core Units in the Explore 35 V2 as it was suggested that this was a more versatile arrangement. But not if you have a long lens. I could only put my Tamron 150-600 G2 lens plus FTZII adapter in at a diagonal which decreased the overall storage capacity. With the Large DSLR Core Unit I can easily store the Tamron along with two other lenses, a Z7ii body, and all the accessories that I would need while working remotely.

Great Travel Option
25 August 2022

I bought the Shimoda Designs Action X50 with a medium inner core unit. Worked great for my daily use, but wanted something with additional space for when I traveled. After looking at several options, I went to the large inner core unit. Worked perfectly for carrying 2 dlsr cameras and several lenses.

Just what I needed
18 January 2022

I need to be able to travel with my GFX-50R, 100-200mm, and 32-64mm lenses. This fits nicely in my existing roll-aboard hard-sided suitcase making it easy to carry aboard for international travel. There is plenty of room for filters, batteries, etc. I really like the rain cover that zips on to help keep the contents in place during travel. Because this does not fill the suitcase completely, I have room for chargers and straps outside the Shimoda unit.

Nice quality but feels overpriced
9 November 2021

Solidly built, light, with many reconfigurable dividers, it's a great piece of kit but it doesn't feel like it should cost $100+.Be aware that it's height is tapered slightly as it seemingly was designed predominately for backpacks. Measure your bag twice before ordering. If you're planning on using it in a carry-on bag it fits nicely, but it could be a touch longer actually. It comes with a nice but thin, unpadded zip cover.

Perfect size
12 June 2023

I use a BMPCC 6K Pro, a multitude of lenses, Zoom H8 sound system and a mini drone. All fits. I also like that it is removeable and can either go directly into one of my smash proof cases, without having to reconfigure, or can just go hand held for a short jaunt. Really well designed and the side accesses is boss!!!

Right size for me with some reservations.
27 January 2022

I purchased a Shimoda Explore v2 with the Medium Camera Cube included, but knew it would not be able to fit my large 150-450 with another 4 lenses. The Large DSLR v2 just barely fits what I need for my wildlife and landscape carry kit. Only downside is that with the Large core unit there is very little space left in the top for anything else. Still, while there are other larger bags, I prefer the size of the 35L Explore v.2 Two notes: the Explore 35L v.2 may fit a 16 Mac Book but it will not fit my 15.6 HP! Also when I ordered the dimensions listed at B&H do not match those supplied by Shimoda for Version 2. Go with the dimensions from Shimoda for best accuracy.

So far so good. More room than I thought.
10 December 2020

This unit is mostly great. There's more room than i thought there would be, so I was able to fit everything I needed. The dividers are sturdy, but can be a bit hard to maneuver into place. I expected that though. I did not find the side access panel particularly useful. Couldn't get my gear arranged in a way for it to be of any use. But that doesn't really bother me. Seems like it would work better with a smaller DSLR or mirrorless. Here's what I have in my core unit.- Canon 5D mark IV- Canon 17-40mm L lens- Canon 70-200mm F4 L lens- Nikon F3 film camera (vintage)- Nikkor 28mm f2.8 lens (vintage)- Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens (vintage)- Canon battery charger- Black Diamond head lamp- Hard case for extra memory cards- Wrist strap- Lowepro GearUp Wrap Soft Case ... MoreThis unit is mostly great. perfect my my Fujifilm GFX
15 May 2022

I have this core in a Shimoda Explore V2 35 backpack that's very comfortable. I've had many bags over the years and this one is just as good or even better than say F Stop bags etc. I've had. Checks all my boxes anyway. The core holds all my main items. The tallest lens for reference that fits vertically, just barely but it does and safely is the GFX 120mm Macro so that was a plus saving me some room. Hopefully this is helpful to someone.
