Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art Lens (Sony E)
SIGMA has successfully developed the world's first full-frame zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8. The SIGMA 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN | Art incorporates an inner zoom mechanism, a minimum focusing distance of 30cm across the entire zoom range, and a filter size of 82mm. Despite its advanced feature-set, the lens weighs less than 1kg, making it a portable and versatile option for either hand-held shooting or a gimbal setup. Constant maximum aperture of f/1.8 Once a privilege reserved only for prime lenses, the maximum F1.8 aperture allows full-frame camera users to expose hand-held in low light and produce beautiful bokeh, while enjoying the flexibility of a zoom. This unique optical achievement has been created through SIGMA's accumulated optical design experience and advanced production technology at the company's sole production base in Aizu, Japan. Practical and stable inner zoom Employing an inner zoom mechanism, the overall length of the lens remains constant when the focal length or focus distance changes. This means the lens is easy to use when shooting hand-held, highly stable when mounted on a tripod or gimbal, and more resistant to dust and water contamination. Consistent close focus The minimum focusing distance is a constant 30cm across the entire zoom range, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4 at the telephoto end, providing excellent close-up shooting capabilities. As well as offering precise focus in confined spaces, the lens can therefore be used close to a subject without affecting sharpness when using the zoom. Premium build at a lighter weight By rights, such a fast zoom should be big and heavy, but while the lens's rigidity and durability protect its sophisticated optical design, this is achieved at a weight of less than 1kg. What's more, this reliable photographic tool uses a versatile filter size of φ82mm, meaning no compromise in portability or convenience.

To find 28, 35, and 45mm prime lenses of this image quality and speed would take almost double the asking price of this zoom and they would take up as much weight and weigh more overall. The closest performing lenses I've found to this rendering are the Voigtländer APO series. They are not weather sealed, they do not autofocus, but they go toe to toe with the sigma for rendering. I've used this for portraits, landscapes, and looking forward to my next projects using this for video.

The quality of the lens and optics are remarkable. Sharpness, critical focal distance, focus fall-off, lack of chromatic aberration, build quality, and the smoothness of the focal change with fly-by-wire are insane. I’m incredibly excited to put this to work.ONE THING to note. If you buy the L mount for panasonic, the sound of the motors changing the aperture within the lens are quite loud. If you were to rely solely on on-camera audio sources it will be picked up in quiet environments. Even when the lens is de-clicked this is the case. I actually video-chatted with B&H (amazing customer service) to verify it wasn’t a malfunction. After testing it in-store on a sony e-mount, we assumed my lens was defective until i received the replacement and did a second video ... MoreThe quality of the lens and optics are remarkable. Originally the representative said his lens was quiet, but i asked him to use an L-mount on a panasonic to verify this. Once he swapped lens mounts/camera he observed a noticeable increase in the noise of the aperture motors from the lens. VERY unlikely 3 lenses all have an issue. All that said: I’m happily keeping the lens but wanted to let people know because i haven't seen this mentioned anywhere yet.

Perfect walk around lens for my video cameras. it's what the 18-35 used to be on my C300mk3. I wish they made an EF version, but I doubt they will at this point. I use this on my FX6 and Burano. A little heavy, but worth it.

I tend to prefer primes for pure image quality and the results from this lens are truly prime quality. I've done some comparison between this lens and my primes in this range on my Sony a7R V and wide open at shared apertures it competes very well.If you are okay with the FL range of 28-45, want something faster than a traditional zoom, and are willing to have a largish/heavyish lens...go for it. It's a winner.
I have seen people complain about the focal range being too narrow, and while I’d love for it to go fully to 50…. Honestly, isn’t 45 close enough? The lens is super sharp, and autofocuses like a dream. Great build quality and not TOO large/heavy. I’ve see. Those complaints also, but really, it’s not that bad!Lens is amazing.
Maybe ok for photography but I did not have a good experience with it for video. I wanted to like this lens but found it way too heavy and taxing on the hand after 20 minutes and for an entire day of shooting it is not feasible. The image was nice sometimes with a great blur at 1.8 but I found a lot of what I filmed was not in focus even with the ND filter off. I would stick to primes for al most the same price you can get the Sony 50MM F1.8 at $200 plus the Sigma 35MM F/1.4 at $835 and the Viltrox 24mm f/1.8 $379
I’ve been using this lens for the last 2 weeks for weddings. I got it to lighten the load and free up space in the bag. It replaced a 24 & 35 and mooooostly the 50. It’s not a perfect replacement for a 50 1.4 but it pretty good. Optically this lens is great. As sharp as it gets. AF is pretttttty good on it. It’s been a little inconsistent but I can live with it given the focal length versatility it’s given me. Overall I really like it, will stick with it for a while.
OK, I haven't tried this lens. But the review below hasn't either and is extremely unfairly giving this a 3 star overall rating. I used a 24-35 f/2 for a couple years, though. With video you need more testing for distortion, lens breathing, et. but lenses, in general, are all pretty good for photography these days. So mainly look at the specs. It's fairly heavy, though it could be worse. It starts at 28 which may not be wide enough for many — 24 is a big difference. But if you like the range going to normal (true normal is about 43mm if you're pedantic so this covers it) and don't mind no 24mm to 27 then this could be great for documentary coverage.
Been using this lens on my Black Magic 6k Full frame and it's amazing. Because of the ability to shoot 4k DCI super 35 on the bmcc 6k, this lens is effectively a 28-66 with that 1.8. Such a killer lens for video. Very sharp, virtually NO FOCUS BREATHING which is really nice. Will live on my bmcc. 6k as my daily driver. Only swapping when needed for specialty shots.
I waited a couple of months before purchasing this lens. I wasn't sure it fit my needs. I was concerned about the size and weight. Well, if you are on the fence just try it. Sharpness galore, fast focusing, not heavy, 1.8 and a focal range really does work for me. I find myself using it for indoor portraits. It's not really a travel lens but event stuff or family photos. I see this being great for the holidays. I ended up getting another copy for the L mount. That one of course is equally as impressive. I highly recommend.
