Better than Apple TV for iTunes on PC

Not one drop-out. Sync between rooms is perfect as well. Now, if you need a coax-to-optical adapter, you will likely experience a slight delay. I do not see a setting in the app to adjust this. Otherwise, perfect though obviously very expensive. Just the relaxing feeling of listening without the anxiety of it dropping out is worth the price. Hours and hours of uninterrupted bliss at 16/ 44.1. I'm satisfied.

We set the audio delay on the Port to the smallest value that still didn't do the trick. More of an inconvenience than a problem since anything we have on vinyl is also available through Qobuz and sounds great from there. Overall this is an awesome product, especially if you already have a Sonos system. The only limitation is if you play something attached to the amplifier through its speakers and stream it back to the other Sonos speakers at the same time.

Expensive, but simply works. It simply works!
16 August 2022

Works fantastic. So, I had already gotten into the Sonos ecosystem buying (2) Fives and (4) Ones to coordinate whole-home music for a party. I had been using an older Apple TV (purchased circa 2016) for streaming iTunes to an older receiver (purchased circa 2004) whose only modernized connectivity is optical or coax digital but otherwise still runs perfectly. This worked for a few years, but something happened circa 2019 or so and it became very hit-or-miss. I attempted to use a new Apple TV via HDMI adapter, and it did actually synchronize with the Sonos system, but like the previous Apple TV it had issues randomly dropping the stream. Now, for editing, yes, you want extra bit depth to mix down. Not necessary for listening (at least for me). Plus, the 2.4 GHz band in my area is congested by about 20 wifi networks, so slower data is better in that respect. Had this for about 6 months and not one hiccup. Love it.

Extremely expensive, but I am content nonetheless. I had been doing very well with my last-gen Apple TV for several years. Then I got into Sonos and realized the older Apple TV would not sync for multi-room but that the newer "4K" at the TV seemed to work. So...I bought another Apple TV 4K and HDMI converter to get back the optical out. This worked fine for iPhone for many months. However, for some reason iTunes on PC would consistently drop out after about 37 seconds or sometimes a little over a minute. May be the most expensive alternative out there, but it works and has been working continuously for over an hour now with no drops. I spent $450, but it works and it syncs to the other Sonos speakers. One note is that it only has RCA coax, no optical. If your system only has optical, you will need a converter or to use the analog outs. As to reports of "compressed" sound, I can't really tell. All I have imported into my iTunes is 16/44.1 and it rings clear. From what I understand, the audio is upconverted to 24-bit, so the effect on resolution regarding digital output at less than full volume is minimal to my ears. I'm sure setting the Sonos app to "pass-through" would match the resolution if you prefer to use the volume control on the receiver instead. Extremely expensive, but worthwhile for my needs.

Lots of potential, but app needs work...
20 December 2022

I was so excited for my 4 Sonos ports. Install and setup wasn't very difficult. I was thrilled to see how many of my fav apps are compatible with the Sonos app. However, I was then very let down when I started connecting my fav apps (Google Music, Audible, Pandora, Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, etc...) and found that many functions (like searching for a song name) don't seem to be available with these apps through the Sonos app. Crossing my fingers the developers double-check these and add more functionality or if things like searching for a song by name are already there, that they make them less hidden/more user-friendly.... I was also so excited to be able to listen to something in one room and tell the app to make the audio book or music follow me to the next room. This sort of works sometimes, but seems very glitchy and at times I found myself upstairs in the kitchen listening and then at random my downstaris gym would start playing on its own... (no one else home, but me). Seems like the Sonos app still has a ways to come as far as how userfriendly it is and how glitchy it is. My final thoughts are that I've heard that Sonos Ports bottle-neck my Hi-Fi music service, Tidal, from being able to play at maximum quality on my mega pricey speakers. Had I realized this before my Sonos purchase, I probably would have looked into another solution. Maybe Sonos will release a Hi-Fi version of the port later on... All-in-all the ports are a fantastic concept and I look forward to when their app software catches up to their physical hardware and also to when their physical hardware gets a bitrate upgrade to that will keep the Sonos ports relevant. For the cost and considering how long the ports and app have been released, I had very high expectations and although I still think these are pretty cool, I am honestly very let down that the actual operation still needs significant polishing. We were considering expanding our home audio with additional ports, but until the app gets better, we'll be holding off and/or looking into alternate solutions.

Nice Little Box That Does The Job Very Well
8 October 2022

I bought this a couple of weeks ago to enable me to use my current (old) receiver to play my selections of vinyl, CDs (and reel to reel) music through the Sonos wireless Beam and Sonos 1 speakers. Struggled to start with but with was put on the right track by Sonos technicians. It works very well and even using the mini sub paired with the beam, I'm getting nice bass through the whole system. For those wondering why I'm using it like this, I have a massive selection of music, much of which I have co-ordinated and put together to suit my moods. This would be too much hassle to arrange through streaming, which obviously has its own advantages.Very pleased with the whole setup now.But just a shade expensive (hence the 4 star rather than 5 rating).

Sonos Port The streaming music upgrade
9 May 2023

I was dubious about getting the Sonos Port. I thought it might be updated very soon, I should wait and have also heard reviews saying the sound isn't good. (digital out / variable volume). I shouldn't have been worried. It is perfect for what I want. I love the Sonos app for choosing music and can send music to any Sonos speaker in the house, apart from the man cave, which has a traditional amp, stereo speakers and sub. The Port works perfectly on analogue out on fixed volume, adjusting volume on the amp. My Kef speakers and Rel sub sound much better than the pair of Fives and Sub I used to have. I can play the same music in every room now, in perfect sync.

The Port is awesome for streaming. Great sound.
27 October 2022

I bought the Sonos Port to stream music through a full house HTD music system I just installed to replace an old Nuvo Grand Concerto system. It was very easy to set up (I have a basic skill level) and I now have full streaming capability with Alexa control, which I primarily use with Spotify (all day). The sound is awesome. I had to dial the volume output setting on the Port down to 80% because I couldn't set the volume low enough in some rooms without doing so. It has plenty of volume... more than an Echo device I use as another source input that I have to run at Max volume. It still sounds good too though. Love the HTD system.
