A great TV with the best technology for movies

All colors derivate from the combination of black and white, so having a perfect contrast between those two colors ( where black is real black and white is real white ), will make the rest of the colors super well defined, accurate, no edge leaking or distortion and very rich and punchy. The TV is very fast when accessing applications. My previos TV was the Sony A950H and in compare to this one, accessing Netflix is super fast. The TV is very fast when accessing applications. My previos TV was the Sony A950H and in compare to this one, accessing Netflix is super fast. In relation to picture modes, I do use : - Standard for regular TV content - Custom for HD / UHD content ( like sports - Netflix, PRIME and blu ray via PS4 ). If I am watching sport, I switch manually to this mod but when switching to Netflix /PRIME, the TV will automatically switch to this mode if the content is in HD/UHD. Excellent. - Dolby Vision Dark in Netflix / PRIME for those kind of contents which are switched automatically by the TV if the content is on that mode. Do not get fooled by Dolby Vision Light cause it is darker than Dolby Vision Dark. I have not tried VIVID that much. This mode is super crispy, super punchy colors and very bright so for now, I am avoiding this mode till my TV reaches 500 hours of use at least. Brightness : remember this TV is not a QLED or LED TV and you must get use to this technology. In the beginning, it will look dark but your eyes will get use to as you continue watching it. After more than 100 hours of use, I can say that now, I consider this TV to be bright enough even when I have my living room windows open, like yesterday that I was watching NFL playoff games, so for an OLED TV, I can say the brightness is excellent. I am watching this TV in my living room with all windows closed when watching Netflix/PRIME or blu ray content. I kind of open up the windows a bit to watch regular TV and sport content and I am very satisfied with the result. If you want to watch your TV in a very bright room all kind of content, then I would not recommend this technology so the best would be QLED or regular LED TV. I bought a TV cover for this TV and anytime I am not watching it, I use that cover to protect it from dust. I also bought a remote control silicone cover protector for the remote which in my opinion should have had illuminated buttons as the A90J has and this is the only con that I can find. My TV is on a stand. I do not like a TV hanging from a wall at all, cause my eyes would have to go up instead keeping them at the same center-height my TV screen is when standing on a table ( watching it from my couch/recliner seat ). If you have a big sofa ( kind of half-moon type of sofa ), you should be able to watch this TV from all angles without any distortion at all. According to what I have investigated, the screen will not burn unless you leave it for a long period of time and every single day on the same screen and even though, it will take months before burning the screen, but I have my own rule for this TV only : I watch it no more than 4 hours and then I turn it off for 30 minutes and continue. I am not a regular TV content watcher. I watch my news in the Internet instead my TV so I am not watching regular TV content with logos in the screen that may contribute to burning my TV screen. I bought this TV exclusively to watch : Football, Soccer and Baseball, Netflix / PRIME movies and blu ray movies. I do not care about the rest, so by keeping my TV covered when I am not watching it, avoiding programs with permanent logos or bars on the screen and turning it off after 4 hours of use, I expect this TV to last a long time. Last but not the least, if you open the windows in the room where this TV is located, avoid the sunlight to fall directly on it and that is why I bought a TV cover cause when I am not watching it, I open up my living room windows. SOUND : I left this review to the last cause it is super important .... I do not need a sound bar. The max volume I have used so far, is 13 and the sound is super high and a very good sound. I am not saying that you could not add a sound bar to enhance the sound but in my opinion, you do not need it. I have had several TV and this one is the only one that has the better integrated speakers of all. It will not compare though to a real surround sound that allow you to hear even behind your ears whatever is going on but how much money it will cost to add a very good Sony sound bar ? Probably not less than $500, so if you have that extra money and a big room where you TV will be standing and you do not have neighbors that will complain about it, go for. Conclusion : Would I recommend it ? Absolutely !! Go for or if you can afford the A90J, by all means open up your wallet. If you are like me that you watch only movies in a dim environment, this is the best TV you can get now. The A90J is more expensive and my TV, the A80j uses the same chip the A90J does so the difference between both did not justify for me to pay more money. One thing I forgot to mention : I do not play games in console but my PC so I cannot give you my opinion about how good your game will look in this TV but I am super confident that they will look amazing.

What becomes apparent after a few months in is that some current/past media have some annoying picture irregularities that will become noticeable on an oled. For example, a lot of games use picture noise for their graphics, or sometimes the games picture wont fill the whole screen and causes edges of the screen to not fully fit the tv border. Little things like this become noticeable because what youre getting is a pure representation of the image. With that said, these minor gripes are overshadowed by the fact that new 4k 120 content looks absolutely amazing. Oled tvs are less brighter than hd tvs but there are settings you can change to brighten the picture to an acceptable level. Game mode resolves input lag without sacrificing visual quality and movies look wonderful albeit a bit dark for some scenes depending on the movie. There wasnt a setting that didnt take care of issues as the tv contains a lot of options you can play with. For what its worth im a huge gamer but i chose this over the LG because i use my tv for movies as well

Both items are minor issues but SONY could make improvements to resolve both items. This really is an outstanding mid to high end television. Time will show whether it will last 12 years as my plasma tv did with zero issues until it would not turn on.

Best television I have ever owned
27 May 2022

It's a cliche, but you truly "get what you pay for." However, I did snag this on sale for 1200 and have to say that this is hands-down the best television I have ever owned. I previously tried to go for mid-range, budget options; most recently, the hisense u7g, which was riddled with problems and abysmal motion interpolation. I returned it. I decided to bite the bullet and go with this Sony OLED instead and have zero regrets. I don't know what to write that hasn't already been said, but the biggest pros for me are the incredible picture quality, great customization features, next-level processing with a focus on a proper cinema experience (motion handling in particular is incredible), surprisingly excellent sound quality for built in speakers, and Google TV. I also greatly appreciate that you can adjust the legs to fit a smaller tv stand (about 28 inches apart). This was a godsend for my living room set up. I have not tried gaming yet, but the response time is amazing and they added variable refresh rate in a patch. I have few cons that take away from how excellent this tv is, but I will say that, while the motion handling is great, you may need to do some tweaking to get it just right. With all motion interpolation off, you avoid the soap opera effect, but will get some stutters due to its fast response time. However, with motion interpolation all the way on, you get the soap opera effect (to each their own, but I hate it). However, I found you can fine tune this. I set cinemotion to low and smoothness to 1. I would have to say motion looks absolutely perfect with this, although some may not want to have to tweak small settings. I also will say that while Google TV is a pro, it can feel a bit cluttered with ads and recommendations I don't need (I recommend "apps-only" mode for a cleaner look). Some may also find issue with the brightness. I have a well-lit room with no windows directly facing the tv and have no issues watching during the day, but you will need to turn the brightness to near max during the day and down at night; again, some people may not like making adjustments like this. All in all, this was a phenomenal buy.

Great TV

I've had this tv for nearly a month and no complaints yet- Oh wait; the remote control. While you can program it to control my Directv dvr, it still lacks some function buttons and is weird holding onto. ( I ended up getting a Harmony 665) As far as the rest of the tv goes, it looks great. It was a toss up between this and the LG C1, but after researching I felt like this one fit my lifestyle. I do not game at all, so what I saw was if you game, get the C1 and if you're into movies get the A80J. I have not changed the picture settings much, and the picture quality is awesome. One thing I was concerned about before buying was how the quality of non- 4k content was going to be. It is still very good in my opinion. Directv still broadcasts at 720p I believe, and depending on what show you are watching, it's still impressive. The 4k content on the streaming apps looks fantastic. However, 4k content is still pretty limited. I have Netflix, Hulu, Apple+, HBO Max, YouTube Premium and not that many movies and shows are in 4k, and even fewer in both 4k and Dolby ATMOS. But I'm sure more titles will become available soon. I have an android phone, so the Google TV built in for the streaming apps is slick. I connected my Google video library to it. Speaking of Dolby ATMOS, I bought the Sony HTA7000 soundbar and the Sony SA SW5 subwoofer and have it connected with the eARC connection and also with the center speaker connection so that the tv speakers are the center speakers in the set up. It sounds very good, especially when using ATMOS. As far as the rear speakers go, I was going to wait until Sony SAR S5 rear speakers are available. This whole package set my check book back a couple of notches, but I sure am enjoying it.

OLED is a Must!

I initially had a 48" LG OLED for my Series X in my game room which opened my eyes to how amazing the OLED tvs are. I wanted to replace out TCL LED TV in the living room with an OLED and decided on the Sony A80j. Pros: - A+ Picture Quality - Great for Gaming ESPECIALLY PS5! - VRR - 4K HDR Dolby Vision - PERFECT Blacks - NO backlight glow - NO panel clouding - Quick Response - Great additional built in features (Live Color Super Sampling) - Handles Reflections well - Gets bright Cons: - NOT for a VERY bright room with no way to control the light - Google TV is mediocre at best and sometimes sluggish (We use a Roku in place) I did a bunch of review diving online and YouTube and landed on the A80j. The main purpose of the TV was to be in the living room and be used for primarily Movies and TV with a secondary use being for the PS5. In conclusion of my research I realized that the A80j was better than the LG CX for Movies... Also a better option if you were using it with the PS5 since it is Sony and has an even better handshake with the console than a Xbox would. I also went forward with it for gaming since I knew that it would get VRR at a later date which it did. The picture is top notch and there is nothing better than OLED in my opinion. The only drawbacks would be if your room it is in in VERY bright. Like a room with many windows but no curtains or blinds. Ours is in our living room that has 3 windows that the tv faces (with blinds and curtains) as well as 2 windows in our kitchen (with blinds). I have zero complaints about the brightness. It also handles reflections very well imo. When you are sitting in just the right spot on the catch at the right time you can get some sun reflection through the blinds in the kitchen but it is really minimized with the type of finish the screen has. Games and movies look beautiful on this panel! It can output 120hz for gaming as well and looks great doing it! Do not be afraid to experiment with the additional features built inside of this TV. Sony is one of the best in the industry. Find a good baseline of what to have on and off online and tweak from there. You will be floored with the quality and clarity of this TV and never want to go back from an OLED. People worry about burn in but I think they WAY over think it. I have 2 OLEDs and have not been worried at all about it. Be smart... Don't leave it on a static screen forever. There is Pixel Shift, screen savers etc built into all the newer OLEDs!

Our first OLED; Absolutely worth the money
9 January 2023

I've been wanting to get an OLED TV for a while. When our almost 15-year-old 52" 1080p TV in our bedroom finally crapped out on us, it gave me the perfect excuse to finally do it. After a lot of research, I settled on the 55" Sony A80J, which was their 2021 model, and was about $400-500 less than their 2022 model. The A80J had tons of great reviews, and overall, I have to say I agree with them. The picture is crisp, clear, and the blacks are super black with no halo effect. We watch 99% of our content via our Apple TV 4K, and HDR10/Dolby Vision sources look amazing. And the Sony processor does a fantastic job of handling lesser-resolution content (like from YouTube). There are only two downsides so far: 1) As with all OLEDs compared to backlit LED TVs, is that it's ... MoreI've been wanting to get an OLED TV for a while. There are only two downsides so far: 1) As with all OLEDs compared to backlit LED TVs, is that it's not as bright. In a dark room, sure, it looks amazingly bright. But depending on your setup, if there is an abundance of light in the room during the day, some scenes, especially dark ones, may be pretty hard to see. Fortunately, we can cover our bedroom windows pretty well so daytime watching isn't much of an issue. 2) I thought that the whole "the screen is the speaker" marketing was going to be this amazing audio experience from a TV speaker (which is what we used on our old TV; we don't have any surround sound or soundbar). But honestly, even after calibrating the audio, it doesn't feel/sound much different than the TV speaker from our 15-year-old TV. No big loss though. I can't speak to gaming on this TV (though I would love to) because it's our bedroom TV and my gaming is done downstairs on our 75" Samsung QLED, but I bet it would blow my socks off. In any case, so far I am very happy with the A80J. It was a great deal and I hope to enjoy it for many years to come.

Power Connector slipped out within 1 hr
22 July 2022

I am really disappointed. I set up the TV for 1 hour, only to find out the power connector was loose. The power cable would not stay plugged in. I immediately called 1-888 number for an exchange. I was told Best Buy was out of stock and I would have only 15 days to make a decision about returning the product or exchanging it. I am really disappointed. If they didn't have stock in within 15 days, I would loose the really good price I got for purchasing the TV last week. Since they were out of stock, the agent offered me a lower model TV, which coincidentally cost more on retail (but Best Buy would honor my original price). He offered an LED TV instead of the OLED I purchased (a step down). I've spent the last year researching comparing TVs (including Sony, LG, Samsung, and Vizio). I went with Sony out of brand loyalty -- this would be my 4th Sony in 30 years. The last one is still going strong, great picture, no repairs after 15 years. I came back to Sony for brand loyalty. I have two lower level Samsung TVs (great, but Sonyis better). The agent said I would need to go to the store to see if they have options. Is this a Best Buy process? Does Sony know they Best Buy has shipped a defective set which isn't really my TV unless they get a replacement shipment for the TV I want within 15 days? If I wait for a back ordered TV and it was not at the same sale price I paid, I will have pay the new cost (which is why it took me 1 year to purchase this set. There was a price drop last July 2021 and I could never get the same sales price until now. This set was everything I wanted in display. This is not what I expected with Sony's higher end TVs. This isn't the Sony brand I am used to. Additionally, I came to Best Buy because of their delivery service (a friend told me Bes Buy would deliver directly). A third party company brought my system. I could've went directly with Sony or Amazon.

Pretty but won't work with a hidden Wi-Fi network
7 March 2022

We purchased this TV to replace a Samsung QLED tv which has been working fine for the past two years and was moved to another location suitable for wall mounting. Our first choice had been LG, which was similar and less expensive. When the LG was installed we learned that LG refused to cooperate with the Public Broadcasting Corporation and the LG set would not support the and install of the PBS Video app, so we sent it back. The Geek Squad did a great job swapping the TV's and wall mounting the Samsung but when it came time to connect to the Wi-Fi we connected to the wrong network. After the Geek Squad left, I attempted to connect the Sony to my hidden Wi-Fi network and this is where the problem is (note that this is not a problem for Samsung or LG). After the Geek Squad left, I attempted to connect the Sony to my hidden Wi-Fi network and this is where the problem is (note that this is not a problem for Samsung or LG). Hidden networks exist to enhance internet security and are particularly handy in congregant living environments such as condominiums and rental apartments, After several attempts to work with Sony customer technical support, the problem was referred to engineering whose "definitive answer" is that Sony TV's are not intended to connect to hidden networks. After exhausting technical support, my call was transferred to Customer Relations. I was told that there is nothing that will be done to resolve the problem because "engineering says that the problem is my network". Note that denial of the existence of a problem is not the same as solving it. After living with the TV for two weeks, while the problem was bouncing around Sony technical support and engineering, the set has performed satisfactorily and it supports the PBS Video app (among others). The TV connects reliably to my Samsung soundbar but Chromecast doesn't work unless I disconnect my casting device (computer/tablet/phone) from the hidden network to my (exposed) guest network for the duration of the casting session. I have to re-connect my casting device to its normal hidden network after the Zoom or program is finished.

Simply excellent

I don’t know if this is the best available for the money but it certainly is the best I’ve seen and could afford. Fabulous picture and sound. One thing I really appreciate though is how good it is at taking care of itself. All the easy setup features, screen savers and especially the out the box picture settings. I know a lot of the options are necessary, very useful, and I do make small adjustments, but I can easily get lost in them, becoming unable to settle. It’s great not to feel I need to, it just looks excellent to me straight away. Down sides? Well, the instructions for the feet fitting could perhaps be benefit from some wording, especially for the centre placement swap. Easy enough to do when you know how, but confusing initially with the faint pictures and numbering system. Also, unless I’ve missed something, which is entirely possible, there’s no obvious easy way to turn down sub bass when it’s not needed. The 125k equalizer setting had little effect so I put it in dialogue mode instead which helped. Remote buttons could be a little too small for anybody with bigger fingers too. Overall though this tv really delivers where it counts and plenty more, making a real event of movies like I’ve never experienced.
