With these two cameras and these lens, I wouldn't recommend the la-ea5, go with the la-ea3 for cheaper and the same fountions, especially if you have a7(i,ii, or III). However if in the future Sony would update firmware so that the a9 can used some of the screw drive lens then sure this would be a better adapter. But as it is today nope. Regarding the lens 24-70 always struggles to get focus. The 70-400 work great maybe even better than on the a99ii. The 70-300 works great but slightly slower than when on a99ii. The adapter works well with my Sony A7R IVA camera, my legacy Minolta A-mount lenses, and my Sony A-mount lenses. Some of my lenses have internal focusing motors and some do not. In either case, the lens focuses rapidly and accurately.Another huge benefit to this adapter is that there is no longer any need to perform autofocus micro-adjustment, which can be tedious if one owns more than only a few lenses. Indeed, autofocus micro-adjustment is disabled in my Sony A7R IVA camera for this adapter.Great job, Sony!

I own 20+ Minolta AF lenses, and all are screw drive. I've been reasonably pleased with the LA-EA4 within the limits of its AF abilities, but have always desired more. When using the a6600, I now have that full range of AF features found with native E mount lenses. Getting animal-eye AF with the 2/100mm or 1.8/135mm Zeiss is so satisfying. Fast tracking with a 2.8/200mm HS is as good as it gets. So, with the right body, it is definitely a big step up in usability over the LA-EA4. But you need to do your research before buying. Sony has currently limited full AF ability to just two cameras; a6600 and a7RIV. If used with any other camera the results are nearly identical to the earlier LA-EA3. Sony has currently limited full AF ability to just two cameras; a6600 and a7RIV. If used with any other camera the results are nearly identical to the earlier LA-EA3. It appears many have been disappointed because their camera isn't supported, and I get the frustration. Not supporting older models, especially those with the latest AF, I can accept, but I'm lost to know why the a9II, or the brand new a7C and a7SIII aren't supported. Perhaps there will be more firmware updates coming? If you have the cameras that can use the improvements, and enough quality screw-drive Minolta and Sony lenses, then it's well worth it. If not, get one of the other adapters.
I've been hanging on to a few old Minolta screw-drive A-Mount lenses in hopes that Sony would eventually make a less-frustrating adapter than the old LA-EA4. Well today I'm a happy camper! No more light loss from a translucent mirror, no more need for AF Micro Adjust, and no more settling for just a few focus points or modes. Even tracking works, to some degree. The LA-EA5 on my A7Riv brings out the full potential of some of the great old glass. (and, I might add, reveals the weaknesses of some of the lesser lenses.) The 80-200mm ƒ2.8, the 200mm ƒ2.8 HS, 500mm Reflex and even the modest 135mm ƒ2.8 all perform admirably. Focus is fast and sure in good light, but does tend to hunt a bit when the light diminishes. They are clearly not up to the demands of a 61mpx body. Probably fine if you're shooting 24mpx, but at least for now the adapter doesn't support screw-drive lenses on any other full-frame bodies.Overall, I'm very impressed with what this little adapter can do.
I was really having a hard time deciding between an A7RIII and A7RIV. The LE-EA5 screw focus support on the A7RIV is what pushed me over the edge. I have DOZENS of old Minolta A-Mount lenses some of which are really nice lenses. All my Sigma and Tamron A-Mount lenses work perfect with the LE-EA5. All of my Minolta OEM A-mount lenses (mostly screw drive) work perfectly with the LE-EA5 EXCEPT ONE! I have an old 35-80 PZ (for power zoom) that won't do anything on the LE-EA5. It won't zoom, it won't focus and since the the lens is focus by wire I can't even manually focus it. A quick search documents this incompatibility. Not a huge loss! The same PZ lens does work properly on my A33.If you are an old Minolta film A-Mount users that reassuring buzzing, whirling feel ... If you are not an old Minolta film A-Mount user you might not appreciate the old screw drive lenses as much as I do. The screw drive lenses are faster focusing on the LE-EA5 than they ever where on my Maxxum bodies. But they are no where near the speed and smoothness of the SSM, SAM and native FE lenses.I was very disappointed when my brand new just out of the box A7RIV would not focus my brand new just out of the box 24-105 lens. It just sat there and did nothing! Then I dialed in the view finder diopter to my eyes and found that the 24-105 was focusing SO FAST and SO QUIET that I hadn't realized it was focusing at all. This problem will definitely NEVER occur with a screw drive A-Mount lens on the A7RIV... you will always KNOW that is it focusing!
I purchased this adapter right after it came out. Then I had an A7lll. It did not work at all on my stable of A mount lenses. I was quite upset with Sony, and felt they had screwed with their fan base, and returned it to B&H. But recently I bought an A7lV, and found out that my LA-EA4 was unusable with my new camera. So in researching, I found out that the LA-EA5 does work. I decided to purchase it again, because B&H is so reliable if I was unhappy. Well this sucker works miracles with my A7IV! My 12-24 Sigma, my 85mm Minolta, and all other A mount lenses now get eye focus on my camera. This is nothing short of amazing, and I'm happy I tried this a second time. It only works with selected Sony cameras. There should be an easier way to identify what bodies it works ... MoreI purchased this adapter right after it came out. Then I had an A7lll. Sleek, well built, completely functional with some Sony A-mount lenses, partially functional with others. My f2.8 16/50 SSM and f4-5.6 70/400 G SSM II work flawlessly. My f2.8/100 macro has to be manually focused. The best I can say about other, or non-brand, lenses (old Sony kit lenses, Tamron, etc.) is that you can screw them onto your E-mount camera and probably take a picture. My advice...the adapter is cheap; If you have A-mount lenses you don't want to give up, get it and experiment...but start looking around for affordable E-mount lenses.
I own a small selection of 6 early-issue Maxxum lenses. I had decided at first just to use a manual adapter, since the cost of the adapter exceeds the total amount I paid for the lenses. I eventually decided that I had limited need for a fast mid-range zoom. Not wanting to spend the money for an E-Mount considering what little it'll get used, I decided on a Minolta 80-200/2.8 APO HS G. The value and performance of this lens is incomparable. Once that decision was made the adapter was a no-brainer. Together they work well, as do all of my screw-drive lenses. My A7-IV will track AF with the adapter no problem, although the screen area for focus points is somewhat smaller than an E-Mount, it doesn't affect my use at all. I am into photography for over 50 years and just switched from an Sony A99 to a Sony A7R III. I have a ton of older lenses (well some Minolta lenses from 40 years ago to some Tamron and Sigma lenses). The Sigma Lenses 70 - 200 and 150 - 500 work fine with this Adapter and that is 3000$ worth of lenses right there I can still use on the new camera. That is worth it for sure. I wish more lenses were supported like my 85mm 1.4, my 28mm 1.8 and my 50mm 1.8 but oh well.
