This saw has been super great in keeping my 20 acre property maintained. We heat with wood and have cut all our wood with a Stihl chainsaw. (I also have an older 034). These are reliable, easy to maintain and fix when needed. the 261 is much lighter than my 034 and cuts at a higher speed. Both are very functional and have the power I need to cut through everything I have encountered. My family are part of a disaster response team that have served after the Apison TN Tornado, Chattanooga TN, Mayfield KY tornado, Hazard KY flooding, and Fort Meyers Hurricane amoung other less publicized natural disasters. I would like to also get a smaller chainsaw from prunning work as well as a battery powered chainsaw (still doing research on these to know what features and brands ... MoreThis saw has been super great in keeping my 20 acre property maintained. I've been around chainsaws for quite some time. I owned and have tried many of them. My all around favorite saw is the ms 261. Its very versatile, I put a 16" bar and use it when climbing then throw a 20" on it and do the clean up on the ground. The power to weight ratio is phenomenal, and the saw had alot of get up and go, more power then the ms290 farm boss with noticeable less weight. I now own 3 of them, 2 are the cm version and 1 standard carburated. Honestly besides the 3 or 4 position start kill switch I can't see a difference, more personal preference in my opinion.

I've had this saw for a year and a half. I use it for cutting 3 cords of firewood each year and to keep a 3-mile woods road system. It is a superior product. It usually takes about 6 pulls to start when completely cold. While working, if I want to shut it off to move to a new area, I let it idle about 10 seconds before turning it off. Then it starts up again on 1 or 2 pulls. It cuts fast for its relatively light weight. I switched to this saw after using smaller homeowner saws, and this is light years better.

I was in the market for a decent chainsaw, as I own a decent acreage with forest land. Frequently, a tree will fall, requiring it to be cut in smaller pieces to a burn pile. I started looking at homeowner saws, then went to farm and ranch saws. Overall, I noticed that those products were full of plastic and are unlikely to survive decades, allowing me to pass the saw on to my boys. I decided to look at "Pro" saws, noted that they are still made to the same standard the old 025 and 026 were made - significantly more metal, easier to repair, etc. MS 261 fit the bill, small enough for infrequent use, while well made to last me a while.I specifically looked for MS 261 with manual carburetor. Despite most forums stating the new M-models are quite reliable, I wanted to have an ability to manually adjust the saw without needing to have a special computer. Simplicity was the key! Dealer near me had a MS 261 saw. I shopped in early 2023, and I think the saw he had was made around 2021. I did not care, it was brand new and exactly what I needed. So far, I used it maybe 5 times. The saw starts right away. About 2 pulls with choke activated, then another 2 pulls to start. Sometimes when it is semi-warm, it would start without choke, will run, but stall on throttle. Which would require the standard starting procedure with great success. Then I learned when I do semi-warm start without choke, to let the saw idle before throttling, and it would not stall anymore. So far, I am very impressed. I hope for decades of good use out of it!
I borrowed a friend's chainsaw, MS 261C, and it out performed any previous chainsaw that I have used. I was SO impressed with its ease of use and quality of performance that I intend to purchase my own. One or two pulls on the recoil power handle and you are ready to go, unlike many other brands I have used. No having to fuss with a choke or fuel siphon bulb. This chainsaw made light work of bringing down a 20' Queen palm and thigh-sized limbs off a Laurel Oak tree. All I can say. I am really, really impressed with the workmanship, quality, and power of this chainsaw.
I bought a MS 261 about a month ago and I am very happy with it. I am not a professional, but I really appreciate all the great features. So far I have cut up 6 ricks of firewood and have been very pleased with the performance. I really like the captive bar nuts; captive top cover screws; and the metal side plate and frame. The power to weight ratio is awesome. The dealer support was very good. They gave me a tutorial before I brought the saw home.
My 20+ year old farm boss breathed its last breath after a run in with AV gas (you might think it, but don’t do it). As much as it pained me to replace it (if ran flawlessly all those years), I needed one. I was all set to buy another farm boss when my wife (God bless her) said why not look at the pro saws. After a day in the woods, I was glad I did. What a saw, I cut everything I put in its way flawlessly. I was surprised at the difference between the two. If you are looking at the 271 FB take a second to look at the 261. Magnesium case, deco valve (old man walking, my shoulders aren’t what the used to be), lighter, more ponies, worth every penny. Thank you STIHL for (hopefully) the last saw I ever buy. It’s a keeper for sure. Oh, one more thing. Your car has a brain, why not your saw?
About 20 years ago I purchased a new 026 pro for land maintenance and cutting about 5 cords of wood per year to heat my home. A couple of years ago I thought I would spring for a new saw. Even though the 026 is still running like new...really like new! The only thing I had to do is replace the carb and an impulse line due to ethanol gasoline. (Nothing but non ethanol since). The replacement was a MS261. I went with the Mtronic with a little trepidation. But the 261 has so far proven itself. Light handling and powerful for a 50cc saw. The mtronic hasn't skipped a beat. If fact the other day I checked the plug to see how it's been running. A beautiful light chocolate color made me smile. Will this saw being running like new in 20+ years? Time will tell. I bought this to replace my old stihl 034 this being a small step down from my research. It is noticeably lighter making it more pleasant to use. I'd say I can get a decent amount more cuts out of a tank than my older stihl. My olny complaint is the oiler does not put out enough oil. I adjusted to max output and I am still not satisfied. A quick Google search and many of people have complained about this and offer solutions by modifying the bar to allow for more oil to get on the chain. I have not done this and will be possibly doing it in the future.
Bought it 20 days ago. Cut fallen tree in 20 small logs and it started loosening power then stop cranking at all. Took it to the shop in Conyers GA qhere I bought it from. They said no returns or exchanges after 1week so they put me on "top" priority list to fix this chainsaw. Paid over $700 for it. Should I have a problem with a Stihl pro series chainsaw after working on 1 fallen tree??Probably not. There is a probability that I could be one of the least luckiest people who bought this particular model. The guy at the Shop said there is a possibility I will have to pay for something that they would interpret as my fault out of my pocket. I hope that will not be the case...
