A smoother, flatter, more opaque, brilliant professional gouache. Winsor & Newton have offered the finest professional gouache available since 1935. Designers Gouache is a range of opaque watercolours, used by designers, illustrators and commercial artists to create vibrant illustrations. Today the Designers Gouache range benefits from significant developments in technology and is smoother, flatter, more opaque and more brilliant than ever before. With 82 colours, chosen for their colour bias (undertone), colour strength and relative opacity, the range includes bright and lightfast colours. Intermixability All Designers Gouache colours are fully intermixable and, an opaque watercolour, can be used with Winsor & Newton watercolours for a matt, flat colour effect. Pigments The opacity of Designers Gouache is due to the exceptionally high levels of pigmentation in the formulation, which results in both covering power and clean colour mixing. The natural attribute of each pigment adds to the level of opacity and contributes to covering power. Surface Sheen As a result of the high level of pigmentation and the Gum Arabic binder Designers Gouache dries to a matt finish. This reduces reflection when photographing gouache art work.

I haven't tried this actual colour yet but I already have a set of these paints and so can attest to their quality. I bought this colour to augment the 10 colours I have. I'm new to gouache being more familiar with watercolour but after a lot of research decided that Winsor and Newton Designer gouache was the right one for me. Thus far I am content that I made the right decision. There's a learning curve to know how much water to use when mixing colours and when applying, but the smooth opaque finish looks great and it goes on smoothly (on NOT/cold press watercolour paper). My suggestion is that you also get a ceramic palette to mix it on as it is much harder to remove from a plastic one that watercolour paint is. Happy to recommend this paint.

Holbein has thicker paints that are a little bit more matte but I really like W&N gouache texture straight out of the tube. It is just a little bit looser which means that you don't really have to play around with adding any water to make it spread well with your brush. It is so much more affordable than Holbein in the US too. I love how opaque and creamy the colors are. I've really been enjoying using them for sketchbook studies. Would 100% buy again and would recommend. #blicksweepstakes

I love Winsor & Newton Gouache. I have been using this brand of gouache for decades. I like the rich smooth colors of this brand. I like water based paints, because the clean up time is quick and easy. Oil paints are great but require time that I don't have in order to clean my sable brushes well. My second favorite medium to use when painting is acrylics, but the opaque option of gouache is easier to use. It's ideal to obtain fine details of animals with gouache. I prefer painting on paper over canvas, which makes the Winsor & Newton Gouache a plus over other media. I started painting with poster paints in nursery school. At nine years old, with assistance I switched to oils. In college I used acrylic. By my early twenties, I found out gouache was the best paint ... MoreI love Winsor & Newton Gouache. Winsor & Newton has always been the leader in opaque watercolors. Btw, I have never been able to use any brand of ordinary watercolors properly. I use opaque watercolors, because the medium works like oils or acrylics. The painting process one uses in oils is ingrained in my brain, so I mix the zinc white with other colors to get the desired lightness I need. There is a plethora of paper such as Arches Cold Press 400 and other papers that provide a smooth surface with just the right amount of texture. I like thick paper for the paintings that I frame. I either mix up my palette on wax paper, disposable palette paper, or in small glass jars that I can seal so the paint lasts for a longer time. I don't work fast or slow, but somewhere in the middle. The assortment of colors available from Dick Blick is perfect. I use the same colors that I painted with as a young person and add new colors regularly. Presently, I am teaching my granddaughter how to paint with gouache. Her first painting turned out beautifully. I learned as a child that quality art supplies helps an artist achieve success. My go to for art supplies is Dick Blick.

So far the tubes of gouache I bought have not been addressed regarding their quality. Some colors are usable and have not problem while some have questionable characteristics. I do color mixing to study color theory and gouache is a medium I enjoy to work with but I noticed that Winsor and Newton Designers Gouache quality does not match their claim. They claim that their designers gouache dry flat, matte, and opaque. I tried other brands of gouache so I have a fairly good understanding of the medium and I was disappointed when I found out that some of their Winsor and Newton Designers Gouache still come defective. They claim that their designers gouache dry flat, matte, and opaque. Their Primary Blue and Phthalo Blue, which I use for CMYK color mixing, were streaky and dries glossy and sometimes I can see the paper through the streaks. The Permanent Green Middle randomly dries matte of semi gloss. I recently tried their Permanent White and noticed that it also dries semi gloss but it doesn't bother me too much to be upset however I do prefer that all their gouache dry matte. I tried the Primary Red that came in the 6 Tube Set and found that the consistency to be odd and I also noticed that every time I squeezed the tube there were bubbles coming out of the tube. I heard that if there were some inconsistencies or if there was pigment separation I should "massage" the tube but it never works and the paint still remains bad. I haven't contacted the company because I thought that only a small batch was defective but after about ten months of waiting (meanwhile I tried other brands of gouache), I noticed that the company has not addressed the issue while I made a recent purchase on their open stock tubes. I think I'll have to contact them soon to let them know that their gouache may have some quality control issues. I have some of their other colors and work great but I don't feel like I can trust this brand for quality due to some questionable characteristics on some of their colors. Hopefully the company addresses the issues I had.
The color looked dull and dirty when I swatched it next to the other gouache paints that I bought. The paint did not lay down as smooth as M. Graham, Schmincke or Daniel Smith. My brush just dragged on the paper. Winsor & Newton designer gouache paints have also become too pricey. I rather buy the artist grade gouaches from the other brands I mentioned, where I can get a full 15ml of higher quality paints. Winsor & Newton's tubes are pretty dinky compared to the others. I just put the tube away. M. Graham even offers more white gouache paint for you buck #sweepstakes.
I bought this after watching a YouTube video by watercolor artist Steve Mitchell. His recommendation for people wanting to try painting in gouache for the first time was to buy one tube of white gouache. When combined with watercolors, the white gouache will create a range of opaque colors, so that you can get a feel for the medium. Once you decide if you enjoy painting opaquely, then he suggested adding to your gouache collection. So to anyone coming from a watercolor background, who is looking to dabble in gouache, give this Permanent White gouache a go!
I have the primary colors with green mixing set and Burnt Umber. The primary green separates when mixed with other colors and will separate after applied to the paper. I can only use it alone as primary green. The kit takes away the ability to mix some colors that use primary green. My Burnt Umber has granules that don't dissolve and when gouache is mixed with water and thinned down they float to the top. I tested it on a scratch paper and the granules speckle the paper. I thought that they would hopefully dissolve with some pressure on the paper and they didn't. These are pricy and considered to be one of the best gouache paints out there and I'm questioning that fact. Out of all my years using all types of paints, i have never in my life have had these issues. I should have taken a picture of these issues. If I can come back to add an image I will. The other paint colors are fantastic - I will call Blick to make sure it's not a quality issue. I hate to have to throw out my Burnt Umber but it's going into the trash - thank goodness I got it on sale during the big paint sale. I gave it two stars because the other colors in the set work excellent with no issues. I hesitate to recommend this brand of gouache, if I do I will have to say expect some mixing issues with primary green and don't be surprised if a color may have granules. Windsor & Newton I'm very shocked and disappointed.
The tube of raw sienna arrived well packed and in good order. The tube top was easy to open and a little over filled but the paint inside was exceptionally rich in pigment and a delightful radiant yellow. It mixed well with my other gouache paints from W and N and other brands. The tube has been generously filled. A great addition to my collection. Thank you for your excellent service.
In general I have found too many instances of binder separation with Winsor & Newton-more than with other brands. There are a lot of fun colors though and it doesn't happen with all of them. I will never buy Winsor & Newton Permanent White again, though. The 37 ml tube I received must have too much binder in addition to the binder separating because everything mixed with this white is drying shiny. Trying to salvage it, I squeezed it out of the tube and thoroughly mixed the paint and binder. Same problem, so it's going in the trash.
I really like this zinc white tube. I have purchased a lot of other W&N gouache and this blends nicely with them. Not as strong as titanium white, and complements my watercolors too for mixing on the road. Titanium white is great for highlights, but sing is great for mixing. It may be the bath I got, but zinc white is stiffer than titanium white from Windsor and Newton.#sweepstakes
