tl;dr: Maybe would have replace the red, but the colors are all bright and consistent. If you're willing to spend the money, this is a reliable first gouache set.Main review: This was my first time using gouache, so bear in mind I have nothing to compare it to.Of course, let's get this out of the way, Winsor and Newton's price range is high. But I wanted to know what I was getting, and I got what I thought I would get.The colors are quite bright. However, the red doesn't mix the way I'm familiar with (use Alizarin Crimson in my watercolor set); I haven't quite figured out how to blend the red into a maroon. The green comes out sprite-bottle green, and it takes some working to get it anywhere close to something you'd see in real life. Of course, mixing gets me similarly-unnatural secondary oranges and purples. Each of these are single-pigment colors, so it makes some sense you'd need some blending to turn them anything but pop-art saturation. The blue and yellow I have nothing but praises. The white works. I haven't tried the black.

I have only recently began using gouache as a medium. Compared to the generic big box craft store brand I started with, this paints like a dream! The colors are smooth and opaque and mix well. If you're not keen on mixing too much, they have a nice color selection. The gold and silver are particularly beautiful and actually lay down solid color rather than giving a streaky glitter look. Blick's has good prices compared to other places, too.

I use W&N Designers for anything I want to have the look of a medieval manuscript. Smooth handling. Can reduce opacity without losing the accuracy of colour; that is, transparency does not change colour. I recommend highly, and give to my students, too. Almost exclusively the contents of my gouache supplies.

I primarily work with watercolor, but really wanted to give gouache a try. I wanted an artist grade pigment without investing too much money to begin with. The Winsor and Newton Designer's set is a great value for good, quality pigment. I think the only thing that would have made this set absolutely perfect for me, is if the set came with Winsor Green (Phthalo Green) and Winsor Blue (Phthalo Blue), rather than the Permanent Green Medium and Primary Blue. As it is, I ended up purchasing these pigments separately. I also substituted Permanent Rose for the Primary Red, which came with the set. I guess I just like the colors I like to work with. But isn't this always the dilemma of purchasing a set? Regardless of my personal color choices, I am satisfied with my purchase and use the set (or the majority of) daily. I have also added a few of my favorites earth tones, as well as Cobalt Turquoise and Winsor Violet. So much more not investing in a semi new medium! But really, isn't it the experience that matters most? Still, the Designer's set did get me started. For those on a budget, without specific color preferences, this would be a good place to start. And quality pigment really is a better experience in the end.
So far the tubes of gouache I bought have not been addressed regarding their quality. Some colors are usable and have not problem while some have questionable characteristics. I do color mixing to study color theory and gouache is a medium I enjoy to work with but I noticed that Winsor and Newton Designers Gouache quality does not match their claim. They claim that their designers gouache dry flat, matte, and opaque. I tried other brands of gouache so I have a fairly good understanding of the medium and I was disappointed when I found out that some of their Winsor and Newton Designers Gouache still come defective. Their Primary Blue and Phthalo Blue, which I use for CMYK color mixing, were streaky and dries glossy and sometimes I can see the paper through the streaks. The Permanent Green Middle randomly dries matte of semi gloss. I recently tried their Permanent White and noticed that it also dries semi gloss but it doesn't bother me too much to be upset however I do prefer that all their gouache dry matte. I tried the Primary Red that came in the 6 Tube Set and found that the consistency to be odd and I also noticed that every time I squeezed the tube there were bubbles coming out of the tube. I heard that if there were some inconsistencies or if there was pigment separation I should "massage" the tube but it never works and the paint still remains bad. I haven't contacted the company because I thought that only a small batch was defective but after about ten months of waiting (meanwhile I tried other brands of gouache), I noticed that the company has not addressed the issue while I made a recent purchase on their open stock tubes. I think I'll have to contact them soon to let them know that their gouache may have some quality control issues. I have some of their other colors and work great but I don't feel like I can trust this brand for quality due to some questionable characteristics on some of their colors. Hopefully the company addresses the issues I had.
I love this gouache because it gives me the brightest white that I'm looking for. It has great coverage, and even when watered down it makes great clouds, smoke, or misty looks when I want them. I plan to continue to use it so please keep it available.
This brand of gouache has fantastic saturated colors, a huge range of single pigments not available from other brands, and convenient huge mixtures for those more interested in design work. The gouache is so concentrated you need a little bit of water for the paint to be workable. The tubes last a while and the color dries hard so its easier to layer than other brands. I recommend working with fresh paint from the tube and using a stay wet palette when squirting the paint out as like most gouache it will crumble and is hard to rewet when the paint glob dries. #sweepstakes
I have been using Windsor Newton gouache paints since I was in college in the 50's . I have always loved them . I use the colors as flat designs and never had a problem with them until recently. .I find that they put so much medium in them that I have to let it drip out of the tube before I can get to the actual paint. In one case of Veridian ,(series 3) ,very expensive, there was so much liquid medium and very little actual paint. Very disappointing. . Now I have a large tube of permanent white with the same problem. . I saw on the tube itself that the paint is being manufactured in France and I am not sure if the quality control is different. I am considering, after all of these years ,switching to another brand.
I'm late to the gouache party because I didn't think I'd want to work with anything so opaque, but I was wrong. I love this more than watercolor! I can thin it down with water to make it transparent, but because the pigment is heavier the coverage is more consistent than watercolor (still love watercolor's spontaneity). Gouache is perfect as a base layer for mixed media. I use it for fashion illustration, book illustration, sketchbook studies. It's great for layering with other media like soft core color pencils, ink, wax pastels, watercolor. I specifically chose Winsor Newton because I wanted something I could use both fresh out of the tube and rewet in my palette - I keep a porcelain palette of hair and skin colors that I can rewet when I work on people ... MoreI'm late to the gouache party because I didn't think I'd want to work with anything so opaque, but I was wrong. Very convenient.
I may have a pretty limited perspective, but after using only cheap gouache to try out the medium, I wasn't enjoying it all that much. I watched a few different YouTube videos that showed the differences between the "cheap" and the professional gouaches, and most said they didn't see a huge difference. BUT I SURE DID. I finally decided just to try a few professional-grade gouache paints and picked Winsor & Newton because of their reputation. I was immediately impressed! The colors are vibrant and even, and the consistency is a whole lot smoother than the cheaper stuff I was using. They mix very well and they dry in a lovely matte finish. Even when you mix a lot of water with them, they don't separate on the page. I don't think I could ask for a better gouache!
