A smoother, flatter, more opaque, brilliant professional gouache. Winsor & Newton have offered the finest professional gouache available since 1935. Designers Gouache is a range of opaque watercolours, used by designers, illustrators and commercial artists to create vibrant illustrations. Today the Designers Gouache range benefits from significant developments in technology and is smoother, flatter, more opaque and more brilliant than ever before. With 82 colours, chosen for their colour bias (undertone), colour strength and relative opacity, the range includes bright and lightfast colours. Intermixability All Designers Gouache colours are fully intermixable and, an opaque watercolour, can be used with Winsor & Newton watercolours for a matt, flat colour effect. Pigments The opacity of Designers Gouache is due to the exceptionally high levels of pigmentation in the formulation, which results in both covering power and clean colour mixing. The natural attribute of each pigment adds to the level of opacity and contributes to covering power. Surface Sheen As a result of the high level of pigmentation and the Gum Arabic binder Designers Gouache dries to a matt finish. This reduces reflection when photographing gouache art work.

I use W&N Designers for anything I want to have the look of a medieval manuscript. Smooth handling. Can reduce opacity without losing the accuracy of colour; that is, transparency does not change colour. I recommend highly, and give to my students, too. Almost exclusively the contents of my gouache supplies.

W N Watercolours are probably the best for the saturation of the pigments, although it’s probably a good idea to experiment with other brands and compare. Some colours there can be as vivid. Good to check the lightfastness. My only problem is Opus won’t bring in Windsor Newton series 6 brushes. The problem is, none of the others are nearly as good; don’t keep a point as long or hold as much water. I hope they bring them back! They are expensive but worth it.

I love Winsor & Newton Gouache. I have been using this brand of gouache for decades. I like the rich smooth colors of this brand. I like water based paints, because the clean up time is quick and easy. Oil paints are great but require time that I don't have in order to clean my sable brushes well. My second favorite medium to use when painting is acrylics, but the opaque option of gouache is easier to use. It's ideal to obtain fine details of animals with gouache. I prefer painting on paper over canvas, which makes the Winsor & Newton Gouache a plus over other media. I started painting with poster paints in nursery school. At nine years old, with assistance I switched to oils. In college I used acrylic. By my early twenties, I found out gouache was the best paint ... MoreI love Winsor & Newton Gouache. Winsor & Newton has always been the leader in opaque watercolors. Btw, I have never been able to use any brand of ordinary watercolors properly. I use opaque watercolors, because the medium works like oils or acrylics. The painting process one uses in oils is ingrained in my brain, so I mix the zinc white with other colors to get the desired lightness I need. There is a plethora of paper such as Arches Cold Press 400 and other papers that provide a smooth surface with just the right amount of texture. I like thick paper for the paintings that I frame. I either mix up my palette on wax paper, disposable palette paper, or in small glass jars that I can seal so the paint lasts for a longer time. I don't work fast or slow, but somewhere in the middle. The assortment of colors available from Dick Blick is perfect. I use the same colors that I painted with as a young person and add new colors regularly. Presently, I am teaching my granddaughter how to paint with gouache. Her first painting turned out beautifully. I learned as a child that quality art supplies helps an artist achieve success. My go to for art supplies is Dick Blick.

So far the tubes of gouache I bought have not been addressed regarding their quality. Some colors are usable and have not problem while some have questionable characteristics. I do color mixing to study color theory and gouache is a medium I enjoy to work with but I noticed that Winsor and Newton Designers Gouache quality does not match their claim. They claim that their designers gouache dry flat, matte, and opaque. I tried other brands of gouache so I have a fairly good understanding of the medium and I was disappointed when I found out that some of their Winsor and Newton Designers Gouache still come defective. Their Primary Blue and Phthalo Blue, which I use for CMYK color mixing, were streaky and dries glossy and sometimes I can see the paper through the streaks. The Permanent Green Middle randomly dries matte of semi gloss. I recently tried their Permanent White and noticed that it also dries semi gloss but it doesn't bother me too much to be upset however I do prefer that all their gouache dry matte. I tried the Primary Red that came in the 6 Tube Set and found that the consistency to be odd and I also noticed that every time I squeezed the tube there were bubbles coming out of the tube. I heard that if there were some inconsistencies or if there was pigment separation I should "massage" the tube but it never works and the paint still remains bad. I haven't contacted the company because I thought that only a small batch was defective but after about ten months of waiting (meanwhile I tried other brands of gouache), I noticed that the company has not addressed the issue while I made a recent purchase on their open stock tubes. I think I'll have to contact them soon to let them know that their gouache may have some quality control issues. I have some of their other colors and work great but I don't feel like I can trust this brand for quality due to some questionable characteristics on some of their colors. Hopefully the company addresses the issues I had.
I have been using Windsor Newton gouache paints since I was in college in the 50's . I have always loved them . I use the colors as flat designs and never had a problem with them until recently. .I find that they put so much medium in them that I have to let it drip out of the tube before I can get to the actual paint. In one case of Veridian ,(series 3) ,very expensive, there was so much liquid medium and very little actual paint. Very disappointing. . Now I have a large tube of permanent white with the same problem. . I saw on the tube itself that the paint is being manufactured in France and I am not sure if the quality control is different. I am considering, after all of these years ,switching to another brand.
Rich Aqua green jewel toned color makes a beautiful addition to night skies and ocean scenes! A mere 5mL lasts for a long long time for an everyday hobbyist painter like myself. I chose to empty my tube into an empty plastic full pan size watercolor pan and allowed it to dry for a few days. Then you can have a large pan of proffesional watercolor paint in an easy to use dry cake form which for me, helps eliminate wasting any. These re-wet beautifully with a few drops of water right into the pan. I usually spray my paints with a mist of water and let set for 3 or 4 minutes. Then ill add water to each pan individually a drop at a time as needed while painting. I also use a cermaic palette to mix and add water as needed. These re-wet very nicely even when a thin layer ... MoreRich Aqua green jewel toned color makes a beautiful addition to night skies and ocean scenes! Ive tried almost every watercolor paint brand but i always find myself reaching for my these! By purchasing one or two tubes at a time with my Michaels coupons, ive been able to grow my collection in a short time without breaking the bank. The difference in quality and pigmentation vs student grade paints is beyond worth the investment. Especially with my method of growing my collection with a handful of tubes each month. This also keeps my Michaels reward points building and vouchers keep coming! My only complaint is that i wish my local Michaels carried the full range of colors, although most all colors are available on the website. Happy Painting!
When I began to invest time in learning watercolor, I surrendered to the idea that I might also have to invest money. I've had mostly good experiences with Daniel Smith, but in my limited experience, Windsor Newton professional also delivers the multi-colored goods.I picked up quinacridone red on the advice of a YouTube artist, and it's a terrific red. Less blue and less opaque than pyrrol, less orange than cad.med. A great clear warm red which mixes gorgeous purples, though for super dark areas, you may want to mix it with something a little stronger.
I'm late to the gouache party because I didn't think I'd want to work with anything so opaque, but I was wrong. I love this more than watercolor! I can thin it down with water to make it transparent, but because the pigment is heavier the coverage is more consistent than watercolor (still love watercolor's spontaneity). Gouache is perfect as a base layer for mixed media. I use it for fashion illustration, book illustration, sketchbook studies. It's great for layering with other media like soft core color pencils, ink, wax pastels, watercolor. I specifically chose Winsor Newton because I wanted something I could use both fresh out of the tube and rewet in my palette - I keep a porcelain palette of hair and skin colors that I can rewet when I work on people ... MoreI'm late to the gouache party because I didn't think I'd want to work with anything so opaque, but I was wrong. Very convenient.
I apply ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, and white gouache to sketches and paintings to create depth and irregular texture. Applied as a milky wash, gouache is useful to defocus areas to then allow areas of focus to standout. John Lovett is a master of this technique. His website provides greater details and examples for artists to learn and try.
As a painter of landscapes, I find myself in constant need of a variety of Greens and Browns. While I am aware that there are an infinite number of ways of mixing these from more basic primaries, I find that this takes more time than I can afford when painting in plein air. Using one of the many options offered by Winsor Newton gives me a head start, without using several other pigments. I have found Winsor Newton to be of reliable quality over many years.
