This paint is absolutely fabulous as it does not dry out to quickly and has a better flow than other watercolour paints and also has a brilliant colour spectrum which is forever being expanded which is excellent when painting light and shade and highlighting with natural tones. Have tried most paints and this selection is top quality and have recommended these paints to fellow artists whom have just stated that price is the only issue when choosing their paints, however they are aware that these are quality paints that are outstanding. Just about to complete a 360 ft mural based on lockdown and recent events in the media, which has already attracted a lot of interest.

Have been painting with Winsor Newton professional watercolors for almost forty years. I have tried most other major brands but kept returning to W/N for consistency, quality, and smoothness (no granulation). Once I got used to their color spectrum, opening up a tube of Cerulean Blue, was always exactly the same… not warmer or cooler. I use a very limited palette and Cerulean Blue is a basic component of mixing grays for me. Love it. No need to look any further.

The most important aspect of painting "on the go" is to be able to access your gear very quickly in order to maximize your time to create new sketches and small paintings. I have used the Winsor & Newton Field Box for years, and have bought many for my students as gifts. It fits in a very small space within a purse, backpack, glovebox, suitcase, etc., and provides an extensive palette with a full range of colors. I have used it on planes, trains, buses, at home, in foreign countries, cars, restaurants, and for plein air painting. It is the easiest watercolor paint set to show any customs official when you travel. I highly recommend pairing it with a small sketchbook and drawing/ painting tool. You cannot do better for overall paint quality, and if you run out of ... MoreThe most important aspect of painting "on the go" is to be able to access your gear very quickly in order to maximize your time to create new sketches and small paintings. W N Watercolours are probably the best for the saturation of the pigments, although it’s probably a good idea to experiment with other brands and compare. Some colours there can be as vivid. Good to check the lightfastness. My only problem is Opus won’t bring in Windsor Newton series 6 brushes. The problem is, none of the others are nearly as good; don’t keep a point as long or hold as much water. I hope they bring them back! They are expensive but worth it.
I know many professionals tell you not to buy greens, but to mix them. Well, I'm not good at mixing colors and I do a lot of landscapes. So, I have a lot of greens and Viridian is very specific. I probably won't use it a lot, but I love having it my toolbox of colors. WInsor & Newton watercolor in tubes are lovely paints and this is no exception. It's vibrant and goes on smoothly. It's pretty right out of the tube or diluted to different consistencies and shades. I like it a lot.
This paint is a rich and vibrant red! I am sad to see this one discontinued. The red is bluish, not orange at all. I think of fire-engine to candy apple red. Everyone I show this color to wants it. I am sad that it is discontinued. I am not sure if the pigment is no longer available, it is less lightfast than claimed (LF:1, the best), or what the reason is for discontinuing.Attributes: transparent color; not granulating; staining; PR187; Sanguine Red : Rouge Sanguine : Rojo Sanguina; Series 3; Permanence A; ACMI = AP; conforms to ASTM D 4236.
I'm primarily an urban sketcher. drawing and painting on location with pen and watercolor. I purchased this WN field set as an upgrade to my kit. It's so well thought out...color choices are a great start, just maybe need to add pink or fuscia if doing florals. Water containers fit the bill. Plenty of mixing pans. Thumb holder keeps it all in balance. Included brush is small, maybe only useful for small details, so will supplement with larger brush. Nevertheless, it's so compact and easy to use, plus the professional grade colors carry a high pigment load. I'm really having fun with it! If $ is a concern, I would not hesitate to try the Cotman version of this field kit.
Rich Aqua green jewel toned color makes a beautiful addition to night skies and ocean scenes! A mere 5mL lasts for a long long time for an everyday hobbyist painter like myself. I chose to empty my tube into an empty plastic full pan size watercolor pan and allowed it to dry for a few days. Then you can have a large pan of proffesional watercolor paint in an easy to use dry cake form which for me, helps eliminate wasting any. These re-wet beautifully with a few drops of water right into the pan. I usually spray my paints with a mist of water and let set for 3 or 4 minutes. Then ill add water to each pan individually a drop at a time as needed while painting. I also use a cermaic palette to mix and add water as needed. Ive tried almost every watercolor paint brand but i always find myself reaching for my these! By purchasing one or two tubes at a time with my Michaels coupons, ive been able to grow my collection in a short time without breaking the bank. The difference in quality and pigmentation vs student grade paints is beyond worth the investment. Especially with my method of growing my collection with a handful of tubes each month. This also keeps my Michaels reward points building and vouchers keep coming! My only complaint is that i wish my local Michaels carried the full range of colors, although most all colors are available on the website. Happy Painting!
I've been using Winsor & Newton Professional grade watercolors in tubes (called Artists' Watercolours before that was changed to Professional Watercolors) since the 1970's, and I still have a few tubes that are decades old and the paint's still good (when watercolor dries in a tube there are always ways to get it out and render it usable). In addition to WN watercolors being of the highest quality, WN's approach to consumers - artists - is straightforward and relatively free of hype. WN doesn't try to saturate the market with an overwhelming number of convenience watercolors with alluring names. (E.g., WN watercolors are available in 108 colors, vs over 250 colors offered by another leading watercolor brand - whose watercolors I also use, but I find I have to do ... MoreI've been using Winsor & Newton Professional grade watercolors in tubes (called Artists' Watercolours before that was changed to Professional Watercolors) since the 1970's, and I still have a few tubes that are decades old and the paint's still good (when watercolor dries in a tube there are always ways to get it out and render it usable). (E.g., WN watercolors are available in 108 colors, vs over 250 colors offered by another leading watercolor brand - whose watercolors I also use, but I find I have to do more research and be more discriminating when deciding which of that brand's many colors I really need in my palette).Click on More Information for each watercolor to see information on pigment, opacity, and lightfastness, etc., though it seems that in most if not all cases you have to go to WN for info on which of their watercolors are granulating. For decades I worked from the tubes, squeezing out only what I need each time (I don't do plein air painting), but recently I transferred all my tube colors into full pans (full because they're easier on brush tips), and WN watercolors set perfectly in the pans. (I've easily revived decades old dried out WN watercolors with drops of WN Gum Arabic and in some cases just with water.)I also want to mention that in the 80's and again recently I had occasion to contact WN customer service in England (regarding brush related issues, not watercolors), and each time (by snail mail in the 80's) the response time, care and service was top notch and above and beyond the call of duty.
