I wish I would have gotten tubes instead of half pans, but the color vibrancy is so apparent that I'm satisfied either way! In particular, the buns from Winsor and Newton really stand out to me amongst other fine watercolor brands. So far, I have Indigo, Payne's Gray, Prussian Blue, and French Ultramarine. No one needs this many blues, but I do. Indigo is a very beautiful color that I find myself reaching for in nearly every painting I make, while Payne's Gray has a depth and blue tone that I don't see in others. French Ultramarine and Prussian Blue are amazing. These colors mix very well with the yellows and reds I have in my palette to create lines of very rich greens, purples, and browns. I recommend these paints to other beginners, but if I were to try again ... MoreI wish I would have gotten tubes instead of half pans, but the color vibrancy is so apparent that I'm satisfied either way! I really enjoy WN Professional Watercolor tubes. I purchased the dot card for samples to determine which colors I'd like to begin adding to my professional palette (started with Cotman and still use for practice or sharing with friends during paint nights). They do have a strong pigment load, and I find that I do need to be ready for overflow when first opening (straight into a pan or travel palette) though much less with WN than with DS tubes. The colors I have seem to rewet nicely, and I find them to work nicely with some DS paints I've used. The dot card helps me choose palette colors over time, and I try to purchase when there are pretty decent sales as costs can add up very quickly. I have several W&N watercolor paints and use their mediums (granulation, gum arabic, and texture) - all are fantastic products. The watercolor tubes are loaded with pigment, they disperse and re-wet easily. Colors are spot on.Only one warning - some of W&N paints that you'd think are single pigments (as they are with other brands) are actually mixes - like Raw Sienna and Burnt Umber. And some, like the Burnt Sienna, are entirely different pigments. In this case, Red Iron Oxide. So I have to be super careful to check the pigments with W&N above any other brand I buy.Thank you to Blick's for listing the actual pigments used!#sweepstakes

These brushes are a definite step up from your typical synthetics. I just keep picking them up during painting since they became my new favorites. They contain about 15% read sable hair and that makes a great difference. These brushes have an excellent point, a good snap, a very good paint holding capacity. Handle is made out of dense wood, feels good in your hands and a great sapphire colored finish thus the name. I have purchased #2, #6, #8, #10 and #14 all about 65% off due to them being on clearance. What a fantastic deal. Too bad dickblick won't carry them anymore. #sweepstakes
I got the rose dore 15 ml watercolor tube, and it's a beautiful coral color. I only have W&N's potters pink, which is a favorite, but this seemed like a unique color from their line that was worth having. I do wonder if perhaps there is a dupe out there that I should have gotten instead, but I was caught up in the idea of the rarity of the pigment. Now I must find more uses for it.
I waited to buy this set because it isn't cheap. I wish I had bought it sooner! It was on sale but I did the math and was cheaper to buy this set than it was to buy the tin and 24 watercolors separately. The colors are so incredible! The pigments are so strong and beautiful! I love the metal tin with built in wells for mixing. I have barely used it but I am SO happy and will definitely buy Winsor & Newton again!
This works perfectly for me. The colors selected in this assortment are typically on most of the Author's palettes for all of the books that AI have on watercolor painting. So far, I haven't needed to purchase any other colors though I have lots of tube watercolors if needed. These are so handy and can be quickly diluted for washes or used with a damp brush for "dry brush" work that is very intense.
Every other tube I have bought has been great but I just recieved a tube of Cobalt Violet that was awful. The tube is almost all binder and very little pigment. Even after stirring with a toothpick, it's a very thin liquid and won't dry on a palette. I've never had a tube of Cobalt Violet (PV14) like this before. So disappointed considering how expensive a tube of the pigment is. I definitely recieved a bad tube.
That picture isn't correct. That looks like their Cotman series, which are quite nice. That container however, is terrible. The half pans don't fit correctly. There's a little bump on the pan to snap the pan in place. It doesn't work. The pans can fall out but even worse is they jiggle when you touch your brush to the paint.I bought the Pro series (Series 3 24 pans) and what a pleasure they are to use. And the container is as great as the paints. The pans have the color's name printed on them and the lift out tray has metal tabs that hold the pans in place. There's even room to squeeze in 2 extra pans.
I have always loved Winsor & Newton Professional watercolors. The pigments and ease of use are unmatched compared to less expensive and student varieties-which ultimately means, that despite being more expensive, they actually last longer and work the way they should. The coverage is perfect, the tubes don't crack or dry up like others and the colors are rich and beautiful. Plus the color palette is broad so you always have a great selection. And mixing them produces clean saturated colors, not mud. I recently just replenished my stock after having not purchased anything in awhile, so I shopped around and Blick had the best prices by QUITE a bit. Plus the full line and the larger sizes.I was really, pleasantly surprised by this. I always try to buy my supplies ... MoreI have always loved Winsor & Newton Professional watercolors. I always try to buy my supplies locally, but with Covid, everything is closed-including my local Dick Blick, so I had to order online. I have placed 3 orders since my initial purchase a month ago! I keep looking around and nobody has a better selection or prices.
