Absolutely banging product. The latest MPC series are all rockchip embedded arm computers that run a buildroot linux. There is some good info on github relating to how to attain ssh. A lot of information on the MPC One is misleading, the MPC X, and MPC Live and Live 2 arent *better* devices in any way. They merely have different midi control interfaces and and audio inputs and outputs. The MPC One has a smaller EMMC at 4gb in size. That's not become any sort of issue because nobody using the Akai MPC line of samplers saves to their internal storage anyways. Expansions can be run off virtually any usb device. As far as the *lack of* ableton live control isnt really an issue I cant see why anyone would spend $1000 on a stand alone production center to hook it up to so ... MoreAbsolutely banging product. I have recently received the AKAI professional MPK mini MK3 25T USB MIDI keyboard controller which has eight backlit drum pads, eight knob controls and MPC music production software. Although this keyboard is more geared towards experience music makers, it is also easily learned and understood by a novice like myself. The array of samplings and software included is very nice and you'll have all the sounds you need to create your own beats and tunes straight out of the box. I've spent hours just playing around with the sounds and the many options that it has. This MIDI controller has so much packed into such a small portable size its amazing. A great gift for the friend/family member that is into making trap, lofi, rap music, or sound effects.

Great for unconventional MPC uses too!

I love this thing. I thought it'd be worth mentioning some of the uses I've gotten from this that aren't really covered in videos or other reviews. I use this in conjunction with an M Audio Hammerkey to play the electric piano plugin on it for my band. Is it a Nord? No. But it absolutely sounds great and I honestly prefer it over some other electric piano VST's. Im also use this as a hardware sequencer for another project to trigger my Korg volcas. One really cool feature is you can sum up all of your patterns into one mega-pattern and run it as a song with a click of a button. The MPC also handles using multiple midi controllers simultaneously. If you're looking at the One, you can get a USB hub to handle multiple inputs and record them simultaneously. The MPC also handles using multiple midi controllers simultaneously. If you're looking at the One, you can get a USB hub to handle multiple inputs and record them simultaneously. The new update lets you record 8 audio tracks at the same thus rendering it as it's own audio interface. There's more features in that department but I haven't looked into it enough to cover it. Needless to say it's amazing and you should. It seems like the new MPC's have covered almost every avenue for music production both live and studio. Though still not as powerful as a DAW, it comes very close for me and gives you enough options and features to mitigate any feeling of it lacking. As I stated before, the new 2.10 update has completely changed the game (I still haven't updated yet) and when I thought everything was perfect in the MPC, akai took it even further. You can easily weigh this against buying a laptop for portable music production and the MPC could (and for me did) win.

Nice little unit.

Cute little unit that is light and portable. It's USB powered, which is very handy. You need to register at the website to download software. You'll need at least the editor software to change the midi capabilities. If you are looking to generate electronic music, this is a good starter unit. Since it's midi only you'll need software--which is available for download at the company website. The software is free from the site. There is no documentation for the labels above the keys (which go to the arpeggiator, although that was not obvious at first glance). The keys are somewhat small--this is not a unit where you can "play the piano. There's a lot of functionality packed into the unit. I've own a full sized midi keyboard before and this little unit packs in plenty of functions, dials and pads on a much more portable unit. The dials are continuous (no limits, which is a nice feature.) The keys are velocity sensitive, another nice feature. It has a very small display screen too--hopefully in firmware updates there might be more info displayed on it. There are some you tube intros on their website, but there are better ones for learning and talking about functionality done by private individuals. Do a web search; some of them are worth watching. The company website could use some more you tubes for learning setup and/or functionality and/or "showing off" what the unit can do. There's not enough documentation to really get going on your own without searching out you tubes.

For anyone reading this and looking to buy any midi controller, Asio4all is what you need. It's an audio driver that simulates an audio interface(probably not correct). It's a given that if you're producing music, you should have a USB Audio Interface like a Focusrite Solo but if money is tight, this should work. The only downside with Asio4all is that if you have your DAW running, you will not hear any audio from any other programs on your computer like Youtube on your browser. There are workarounds like Voicemeeter Banana. It's kinda like a mixer. If you're on Mac, you don't need any of these. In your DAW(Ableton, Reaper, Garageband, Fl Studio, Logic etc), set the audio to ASIO and under that option you can select Asio4All. Set it to 44.1khz. In your DAW(Ableton, Reaper, Garageband, Fl Studio, Logic etc), set the audio to ASIO and under that option you can select Asio4All. Set it to 44.1khz. There should be a green icon on your taskbar that you can open to set your audio preferences. Click the gear icon to select your audio playback (headphone, speaker etc) Then on the bottom is a slider for your buffer size. The lower the number, the lower the sound delay. But that can also introduce audio glitches if you have a weak computer. For the software, just register the MPK on the Akai website and it'll have everything ready for you. 15 minutes tops. Other stuff: If you're a streamer and you're trying to get your DAW audio to OBS, you need to install REAPLUGS. One of the plugins is called ReaStream. Basically you drop the plugin on the master volume as an fx then set it to "send (to local broadcast)". Then in OBS open an audio input source. Then you apply Reastream as a filter and set it to receive audio. 10/10 Product. Works as advertised. Reasonable price. Looks good. Feels good, for the price.

Steep Learning Curve VERY Capable System
25 August 2022

I'm going to start right off by saying that this is going to take some time to learn to use if you haven't used a music production system before. the Quickstart Guide is pretty good and will get you going. You will need to download software to use this with your computer. If you're a beginner, this may take some time to learn about. If you're an experienced music producer and you like creating your own beats and loops then this is definitely your compact system. I played with this for two weeks and like the pad-feel, the keyboard is just right. Lighting of the pads and controls is also a very nice touch. Connects to your computer via a usb port. If you have an apple system, you'll likely need an adapter. The keyboard has 25 notes, but you can use octave down or up buttons and expand the range. You choose the tempo with a tap-tempo button, you set the pace by tapping your finger on it. I don't really like the 4-axis thumb stick as I'd prefer arrow buttons, but it's not a problem overall. The pads are for drum hits, BUT, you can set them for other sounds and are speed as well as pressure sensitive. You can play a series of notes and press the "note repeat" button to have those notes continuously repeat as you add in your beats etc. Lots of fun! SIZE: width is 12 and 1/2 inches. front to back is 7 inches exactly height, from table to top of buttons and knobs is at 2 inches. I like it, and I definitely recommend it.

It has the Music Production Software, which makes it easy to play all styles of Piano music. I enjoyed toying around with the different sounds, and I didn’t have to BUY anything extra. This was great. All I did was pair my Bluetooth headphones. You could use corded ones if you have those. There is a slot for that on this keyboard. The sound is very professional, as it says, sharp, crisp and clear. The keys themselves are perfect, as is the pitch. I very much enjoyed my newest gadget, where I stepped out of the box and taught myself something new and enjoyed every moment of it.

The AKAI Professional MPK Mini is lightweight without feeling flimsy (except for the miniature piano keys themselves). The rubber feet keep it quite stable on a stand next to my workstation. It has no power input (or audio output) besides the USB bus, so, while eminently suited for use with a laptop (or other workstation), is not useful as a controller for a tablet-based synthesizer. Nor do the small keys lend themselves to on-stage playing, at least for those whose hands are accustomed to standard piano keys. I found these two points disappointing, given how obviously portable the device is. As a desktop controller, however, it shines. With the option to use keys or (velocity and pressure sensitive) pads for input, it works well with the (free download) MPC Beats (and was immediately recognized by Apple’s Garage Band). This beginner was quickly able, after watching a fifteen minute YouTube video, to record a basic sequence beat with a bass line and play a synth lead atop, with little more effort than would be required for a solo artist with a looping pedal. The joystick combines pitch bend and expression sensibly, replacing two separate wheel controllers, and the parameter control pots feel very sturdy. My largest complaint is with the non-intuitive and rather cumbersome licensing of the sound libraries. On my Mac, the included libraries downloaded and appeared to be applications, but would not launch; a third-party licensing app required creating yet another online account, and I’m not entirely sure it unlocked all the libraries. I would have appreciated an obvious step-by-step guide rather than hunting through online FAQs.
