I love how these shoes feel while walking. If you are somebody who tends to drag your feet or not the best at heel to toe walking, these are perfect for you. The way the toe is shaped, helps the way you walk. They didn't seem heavy or bulky even though they look like they could be. They were light weight and comfortable. The traction on the bottom is great for all terrains. They held up good while walking a wet trail with steep hills. I know some reviews say they are smaller in size but in my opinion they fit true to size. They are a little narrow where the laces start by the toe but after taking the thin insert out they fit me perfectly. Even without the insert they were comfortable. I'm a true size 9 and it fit is pretty good. I couldn't go up because I would slip out of the heel which already seems loose. I wear thicker socks and tighten the laces well to keep from slipping. They look great and there is a lot of cushion. I wore them on a 6 mile hike on fairly easy terrain and they performed better than expected. I've also used these on my treadmill and it almost feels like I'm bouncing, there is so much cushion. They give me some height too! There was a bit of an adjustment for me when I first put them on walking. After 10 minutes i felt comfortable and I realized my posture was better and I was putting less pressure on my joints.

I have feet with a wide toe box but are a normal width otherwise (short stubby toes). I was excited by the idea and originally, the fit of these shoes. They have many fine features but they are also wide in the heel. I didn't notice the slippage in the heel until I started hiking. No matter how tight I laced the shoes I couldn't get my heel to stay put. If we hadn't cut the hike short my red irritated heels would have blistered. Also, the laces are too short for that last grommet and they are difficult to get on. I had to purchase a 54 inch pair of laces. That said, the toe box is wonderful and the constuction is excellent.

1) First impression -The kicks came in a typical shoe box.I was actually somewhat turned off at first since the texture of the front/sides of the shoe made them look like they had been pre-worn... Upon turning the shoes over, I realized that they actually *were* brand new and it was just that the fabric texture got fuzzy/scratched up easily (possibly in transit).2) Pros -• Very comfortable. I have extremely wide feet so I tend to experience chafing or too much squeezing near my toes, but these felt incredibly roomy!• Love the Vibram grippy-ness... I had good results near water.• I've had good experiences with Gore-tex in the past so it was nice to see that as a feature on these shoes.• Pull-on loop near the back of the shoe was very convenient since getting ... More1) First impression -The kicks came in a typical shoe box.I was actually somewhat turned off at first since the texture of the front/sides of the shoe made them look like they had been pre-worn... Also would prefer a taller "neck" for higher levels of water.
I am a long-term Altra fan, and have had two pairs of Lone Peaks as well as the Outroad. I prefer the Lone Peaks but bought this shoe for the vibran sole and GORE-TEX. I wish they had these feature on the Lone Peak. I ended up going up a half size in this shoe compared to what I wear in the Lone Peak. I wear the same size in the outroad as the Olympus. The fit is slightly off: it is a bit uncomfortable for me in the mid foot, not sure why that is. Additionally, the laces are too short and I wish they were flat laces. The heel cup is also too short and I could see it digging in on long hikes. I think softer flat laces might help with this issue. I think Altra made the heel cup short so that the shoe would look like it is not a zero drop, but I could stand the ... MoreI am a long-term Altra fan, and have had two pairs of Lone Peaks as well as the Outroad. I think Altra made the heel cup short so that the shoe would look like it is not a zero drop, but I could stand the aesthetics of a slightly taller heel. I find the way the toe rocker is designed to be very comfortable when walking and makes up for the bulkiness of the shoe. They are a bit heavier than I am used to but it is manageable and not uncomfortable.
The good: their shoes are made for runners. I have turf toe and can no longer run in soft bendable shoes, and Altra is a game changer for people with crappy feet. With these thick soles you can run on gravel and never feel a thing. If they'd make their shoes in size 9½, I'd be totally happy. They make the half sizes for men but not woman. Go figure. If I could get them in my size, I'd give them 5 stars.Picking the least obnoxious color choice, I am no fan of the bright lilac.Sometimes I wonder if sport shoe designers intentionally pick colors that a guaranteed to clash with absolutely every running outfit?Overall: if you want to feel like running on clouds while not fatiguing early, try these.
I have a painful callus over my right 5th metatarsal head. I figured out it was caused by the narrow toe box shoes I was wearing. Found Altra searching for wide toe box shoes. I picked the Olympus 5 GTX because it has the original Altra footprint, maximum cushioning, 33mm stack and is a waterproof Gortex. I walk on the beach and trails, and in the rain - the Gortex upper keeps the sand and water out. The shoes are super comfortable with great stability, and my painful callus is much better and continuing to improve. I got the Women's size 8.5. I measured my foot and used Altra's size chart. The shoes fit perfectly. Worth every penny to be able to walk without pain.
If there was and option for no stars that's what I would pick. These shoes hurt my feet almost immediately. The are much more narrow than the olympus5. The Olympus 5 had plenty of room in the toe box it was cushiony and flexible. The Olympus 5 GTX is none of that. It's narrow, stiff, zero cushioning. They should not boast the original foot shape for these shoes nor should they lead you to believe that it is the most cushioning they have available cuz it's not. The lone Peaks sevens have more cushion than these. They are awful. Shame on you Altra
The most comfortable shoe I've worn in ages. I've been struggling with getting moving again after a foot injury, and these shoes made it possible this winter. Extra padding is great for pounding pavement and the grippy soles kept me upright on trails. Some of Altra's shoes have gotten a little narrow, but this one is true to the wide toe box. I'm impressed by the design of this shoe, the way it wraps around the foot and supports a high arch. Truly waterproof - though that doesn't stop watering from coming in the top :) Once the weather turns warm, they get to feeling a little stuffy. I've tucked mine in the closet until next autumn.
I love Altra shoes and boots and have used/loved at least 10 pairs. Including a pair of Olympus 5 - non-gortex that I LOVE. They fit great out of the box and are super cushiony. I don't get sore heels after long hikes. But these gortex ones are too small. I've ALWAYS fit size 8.5 and these just don't fit. And I won't size up because the heel slips as well. And sizing up would make that worse. I don't understand why an Olympus 5 doesn't fit the exact same if it's gortex or non-gortex but these are not as wide, and not as long. I have the 2 side by side to compare, both a size 8.5. Altra - I love your shoes but stay consistent please. And YES to a gortex sneaker with high cushion and tread for hiking. Hopefully next model fits like your normal altras - wide toe box ... MoreI love Altra shoes and boots and have used/loved at least 10 pairs. Including a pair of Olympus 5 - non-gortex that I LOVE.
