I bought this previously purchased item from John Lewis in Welwyn Garden City on 26th March. While I have no complaints about this Echo Show 8 itself the device in the box was a 1st Generation rather than the 2nd Generation model. Ideally, I wanted the 2nd Generation but am OK with the earlier version. Both the printed box label, from what I presume was the Internet sale to the original purchase, and the red sticker indicating the reduction from full price implied that the Echo Show was the 2nd Generation version although the actual box matched the 1st Generation device inside. I have thought hard about writing this review as I have no issues with the actual device just the way it was described!

This is great. I already have an apple HomePod but that wasn't compatible with my Ring doorbell but of course Amazon Echo is. I got this in place of the Ring chime. It announces to me when 'someone is at the door' so I know even if my phone is on silent & when I open the app on my phone I can then see & interact with the person at my door on my Echo screen. I can also view the room my Echo is in from my phone when I am out through its camera meaning I can check on the cats when I'm out. Plus all the other things you would expect the Echo to do. All in all, great bit of kit. Also I'd never buy my electricals from anywhere else because John Lewis customer services is great!

This is a vast improvement on previous echos shows. It has a rich sound full enough to fill a busy room (ours is in the kitchen) The touch screen works well with all the additional features able to be directly accessed via the screen. Very clear screen which is able to display PNP for the front doorbell at a reasonable size. Only downside is the fact that it will not play BBC radio via a routine only by voice. It did work for a white but has now stopped. I know this is a problem with all Alex units and about time it was sorted.

Bunnings took a long time sending this. Although they gave no indication it was not in stock I had to wait for weeks until more stock was available. As far as the Echo Show 8 goes, it works OK, but Alexa needs to improve a lot. It does tend to muddle some words up often. It gives inaccurate temperature readings for my area giving me readings for a area 40km away. She actually does not seem to know my suburb at all. She seems to rely on BOM for weather which is inaccurate for my area. There are many things she cannot do such as be paired to my own personal weather station on weather underground. Alexa also has trouble connecting to my fitbit often. I love the "calm my dog" which soothes my dog if Alexa hears him barking. The quizes and trivia games are entertaining. ... MoreBunnings took a long time sending this. Programming skills into her is time consuming and can be confusing. They need to work on Alexa by simply adding a function much like how a universal remote control works, or users are forced to buy new appliances such as new TVs, new stereos, new dvd players, etc...She works well with my video door bell and security cameras, but she does not work with all brands so users do need to do their research first about this.Alexa needs to be able to be given a new name decided by the owner instead of just a few optional names already predetermined in her list, as my parrot is starting to learn the name "Alexa" i'd rather name her somthing my parrot cant pronounce!
Being in the kitchen just became a whole lot of fun!- karaoke-ing along to my Amazon playlist. Watching movies and live sport. I take this unit with me into any room where l will be spending time. Mundane tasks have become anything but when I ask Alexa to read a standard Kindle book allowing me to multitask and rapidly get through my "To Be Read" lists. I am now part of the Smart Home revolution and never realised what l was missing!!
Nice large & clear display, the Audio is really clear & goes very loud without distortion, but Alexa still manages to misunderstand or totally ignore me some of the time. But that's down to Alexa in general and not specific devices. It integrates with other devices easily and we control our heating and lights & Ring Doorbell with it.Some minor gripes is that it doesn't always automatically display the front door ring camera when someone rings the bell. Also when you ask it to display the front door camera it displays it in a window and not full screen which you have to manually resize. Also It would be nice if you could choose different clock faces
Pros: Looks good has some different screen backgrounds to choose from. I like the dark mode so its not lighting up the room while you’re trying to sleep but you can see the time still. Like the choice of tones and radio stations that you can choose to wake up to. I also like the camera cover that you can click on especially having the clock on the bedroom.Cons: More backgrounds and customisation features would be good.
I love this this thing. It basically just looks like a clock or ipad or photo display or all three but it comes with alexa and all her glorious usefulness. Then theres netflix, i had the ordinary no screen alexa before this and so obviously you wouldn’t be watching Netflix on it, but this is perfect for that and it’s something i do a lot so its quite important to me, it frees up my phone for whatever else while giving me a decent screen and surprisingly good audio. Another plus i think is worth mentioning is the clock, while I’m kind of irritated that i can’t make the clock display full-screen (it sits in the bottom left and takes about 1/4 of the screen space) i DO love that when I’m in a dark room trying to sleep, it dims to JUST readable, i can’t stand excessive ... MoreI love this this thing. This one uses ambient light detection very well and dims the background leaving JUST the digits visible which are lit JUST enough to make out in the dark. This alone to me is worth a LOT.
this is the best device, I brought it as I wanted a good speaker with a screen and this is just awesome. The device once updated is very snappy and everything works as you'd expect, the sound is great, and it gets loud. the build quality is Solid and it looks nice.the screen is really good to display photos, (like modern photoframe) but not great to watch content on, it's just a cheap tablet screen but what can you expect.the only other thing is that if you don't tell the device very specificlly to turn the screen off, it will just stay on forever. I hope being on so much doesn't burn it out.but other than that it's a great device and for the money you pay it'll be hard to beat.
