This is a great pick if you need a new processor, especially at this price point and how it performs against Intel processors. I would highly recommend this once they are back in stock!

Due to current chip shortages, it'll be easy to wind up with this processor for well above $280. In a word: Don't. You should wait for it to go around $220 or less, or get the 5 2600 which is almost as great. People on a very tight budget that don't care much about gaming will want to consider a different processor that has integrated graphics. Beyond that, it's just a matter of whether you'd rather have something more powerful (and whether your motherboard has an AM4 socket). This is probably right about the "sweet-spot" for value in terms of performance and relevancy for price.

This is a decent board, but I would only recommend that you get it if you have multiple TB 3 devices that are critical to your regular workflow. Plus, the Intel Fan mount is kinda awkward to use on an AMD board. Once you have everything running, it is pretty decent, but I had several hiccups along the way that kills my recommendation to someone wanting to build a high end system. You will need an Intel compatible aftermarket cooler (My spare stock Intel cooler I had to use didn't cover Ryzen IHS or provide decent cooling for my 3600. Mistake on my part). BIOS update tool refused to recognize USB 3 flash drive that I formatted to flash the bios with even though it recognized it when formatted for windows installation. Took an hour until I finally got the flash drive to show up in the BIOS tool. It was only made worse because the Wireless AX driver refused to work until I got the BIOS to update for some reason, and since I move my system a lot, I was about to go to Newegg right then for a replacement. Wireless has been good since then. P/S 2 was DOA. Checked the splitter I was using and checked with a couple different P/S 2 keyboards. Nothing, no lights, no input, nothing. Kinda sucks when I want to use my Model M13 for working at home. All the USB ports and SATA ports were good though. Still have an unknown "base system device" in device manager. While this could be fixed by using the included CD with drivers (Points for including that BTW), none of the downloaded BIOS or driver updates fixed this issue. Currently waiting on a Blu-ray Multi writer I ordered from another site so I can try the CD. This may also be the source of some weird bugs I am having (black windows, loud fans, and one where the computer went to sleep and wouldn't wake up) If I didn't have to work from home and if I didn't need it for my drafting workstation and if I didn't need it to finish finals, I would have returned it and bought a Mini DTX motherboard from ASUS instead. I also have unfortunately just missed the deadline for returning the board, so I guess I am stuck with it for now. Research your hardware guys! An extra 5 minutes now can save hours or even days later! That's how I got myself into this to begin with XD. This board is good, bit there are some kinks I would work out before continuing this line. Add USB 3 gen 2 header. Perhaps provide a usb stick with the loaded drivers guaranteed to work instead of relying on having a CD drive. Maybe even bundle with a compatible cooler to make the experience a little more user friendly. Things like this can really make or break the user experience for someone like me on their first computer build.

If you can get this Ryzen 5 3600 @ $100 or less and pair with a $60-$80 motherboard b450 or x470 motherboard, then you have a really great platform to build from. It will provide what's needed to figure out your specific use and needs. From there, you can look at upgrades or switching to an intel platforms. Currently, Ryzen 5 5600 (non x) are going for @ $130 on New. If that's the case, it's definitely worth the extra $30. You'll want to pair that with at least a b550 or x570 board, if you can get one of them in the $80 to $100 range. I was upgrading my aging PC from a i5 6600K Skylake and could not not find any of the Ryzen 5000 series CPUs in stock, so I purchased the 3600 as a placeholder. When paired with an ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero, Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR4 3600 RAM, and an EVGA 2070 Super I am able to get 100-120+ FPS @1080p with most settings on HIGH in Black Ops Cold War and Warzone. (Raytracing will still drop it to 60'ish). The ASUS tuning software auto overclocked the 3600 to 4.5GHz when cooled with a NZXT Kraken Z63. Your mileage may very, but it was stable at those speeds for me and provided a big jump in performance over the 6600K. You may not even feel the need the upgrade at this time. (Who am I kidding, if you are shopping here you already feel the need to upgrade)

I just have to avoid sustained, heavy, multithreaded work.Lastly, I recommend ensuring your motherboard has PCIe 4.0 for better GPU upgrade paths in the future. I had this issue on my old machine, where it had PCIe 2.0 a relatively short time before PCIe 3.0 became standard.
I bought one of these cpu's when they first came out and it is still working well. This one has been installed as an upgrade to an older cpu that I had in one of my other computers. This particular cpu is running at about 4350mhz with a little overclock and under volting and I could not be happier with it. It is on a par with the new one of these I purchased when they first came out. I would recommend this cpu if you want a cheaper alternative to some of the newer ones available. It still has plenty of grunt and you would not be disappointed.

But this cpu now makes a big difference again, it should be 33% faster on single core and way more than double on all core, (64 cores vs. cores 12 threads). It just feels more than 33% faster, i was not sure i will feel the difference, but this thing is powerful. Do you need 6 core or 12 threads? 6 cores are great, the extra 6 threads is like two efficient additional core, it just makes the product feels premium. I really should have consider the r5 2600(x), but that is not a premium product, single core performance is limited, memory controller also limited, but it is not a big deal, old technology, that is fast, just not a premium product, if somebody expect a decent manual overclock, will be dissaponted, most chip will not hit the 4300MHz on all core, prime95 stable, can be game stable, but not fully stable. Even decent cooling will not help a lot. It can be as fast as an intel on 4700MHz, but cannot hit a professionally cooled and/or delided, overclocked 8700k. another pont, you will need a ryzen 3000 ready BIOS, older boards still can/will have a not compatible BIOS, so they need to be refresh by a not 3000 series CPU first, wich is not a big deal, but a hassle.
Good Points: The newer 3600 silicon is much improved over last year's initial silicon, with improved power efficiency, all-core frequencies and better overclockability. I have this chip running at 4.40 GHz on all cores using only 1.28125 V. With 2019 silicon, 4.10 GHz would have been a lucky achievement with > 1.35 V. Multi-threaded performance just edges an 8-core, 16-thread Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition, with much greater single-threaded performance; both of which improve further with an overclock.I'm not using the in-box cooler. It's perfectly adequate for the 3600, but I prefer third-party coolers. This means everyone can benefit from the improvements.(2020 silicon can be identified by checking the second line next to the QR code on the heatspreader. The first four numbers of this line after the initial two letters are the date the processor was manufactured [two digits for the year; two for the week]. For my sample, it was manufactured in the 17th week of 2020.)Improvement Points: Nothing really to complain about. I knew what the 3600 was capable of before I purchased. It represents AMD's best budget high-thread-count processor, and AMD can't keep them in stock.

Wait for devs of 3rd party monitoring software to update those to accurately report the stats of your Ryzen, because none of them do at this point in time.Once the chipset drivers from AMD are installed, a Power Plan selected (Ryzen or Windows), and Ryzen Master software installed, it's a matter of getting motherboard BIOS settings to cooperate until the 3600 is boosting up to 4.2 GHz. If all is well, then when it has nothing to do it should idle at VERY low speeds.Currently, on a B450M motherboard, the voltage shifts between .99 and 1.35, not overclocked and with PBO disabled. BIOS version & settings of any given mobo will impact voltages and speeds.Those numbers are from a beta version of HWiNFO software. Don't expect 100% accurate numbers from anything except Ryzen Master, because any other software doesn't read Ryzen 3000 series processors correctly, yet.Ryzen 5 3600 is rated to safely operate up to 95 degrees Celsius; idle temperatures of my CPU with an aftermarket heatsink run between 29 and 35 degrees Celsius. I haven't seen temps above 60 while actively using the PC, e.g. gaming. Temps will depend on how well you've put paste on the processor, if you've seated the heatsink properly, how ventilated (or not) your PC case is, and your ambient temps outside of the case. If your CPU is running ridiculously hot at idle, troubleshoot the issue and if you can't find the cause and fix it then the issue may be the CPU, itself. If you're unable to reach max boost speed no matter how much you tweak BIOS settings, you may have lost the silicon lottery, ...or, you may simply need to wait for a future BIOS release for your motherboard model to fix the issue. I say this because some people have bought multiples of the same CPU and gotten different results in speed and voltages for each one when the rest of their hardware & settings are exactly the same.* The metal of the heatsink, itself, is the shortest of any of the Ryzen CPUs released thus far, at 19-20 mm tall. No copper in it, no vapor chamber, as this is a budget CPU. The AVC branded fan that came with mine has hydraulic bearings, which is good, except that the fan itself is quite small- which means noise, because it has to work so hard- so, every time that the processor boosts you'll probably hear the fan spinning up faster and, inevitably, dialing itself back down. Boosting happens frequently, by the way. No amount of fan curve tweaking will resolve this, though you could set the fan to a static RPM or voltage regardless of temperature (anything other than 100% wouldn't be safe in that scenario.). The noisiness was annoying, so I got a better heatsink.
