The Sette 270Wi features a grind size adjustment mechanism where the 30 main settings can be fine-tuned in 7 additional steps. With a micro and macro adjustment ring, the settings are easy to read. They invite experimentation, as the preset can be easily found again. The Sette 270Wi allows for weight-based dosing of coffee. Thanks to the high-quality weighing technology from Acaia, a manufacturer of precision scales for professional use in coffee shops, the desired amount of coffee is ground directly into the portafilter at the push of a button. This feature is unique so far. The "i" in the name 270Wi stands for intelligence. The software automatically adjusts the grinder's offset, determining when to stop the grinding process before reaching the set amount, getting closer to the desired quantity with each grind. Additionally, the grinder is equipped with a "Quick Burst" function, allowing small amounts to be ground on demand to compensate for under-dosing that occurs during the first grinds after adjusting the grind size or changing the amount or type of beans. Future software updates can be installed via the Bluetooth interface using iOS or Android smartphones. Through the Bluetooth function, the total ground amount of the grinder and the amount per grind can be transmitted to the Acaia app "Brewbar." Individual brewing processes can be precisely recorded and evaluated.

Purchased this 270wi late 2018 and currently (March 2023) on third motor, which also is giving signs of going out. Making clunking sounds is the sign your motor is about to die.Not certain I want to stay with this grinder or upgrade. The Pros: While in the warranty period, Baratza has been great customer service.... no complaints. When the grinder works, it is amazing. Has a great consistent grind. Easy to self service and replace parts. The Con: If making about 5 - 7 double espressos per day, you can expect approximately one year per motor. I believe the problem is that the motor has a plastic housing and plastic gears.

My current living situation requires that I move between two homes in different parts of the country. I’m fortunate to have two sets of home espresso bars, an ECM Synchronika / Macap 4 doserless in one location and an Expobar Brewtus / Sette 270Wi in the other. I am convinced the Sette provides a superior, clump free output as compared to the Macap. My Sette bottomless portafilter outputs are near perfect shot after shot, without using distribution and OCD tools. The built in Acaia scale of the Sette makes espresso workflow quick and efficient. I also like Baratza’s repair - don’t replace philosophy, so the Sette grinder is designed to be rebuilt. For sure the Sette is much louder than my Macap, but its level is acceptable. My Flat Whites, Caffe Americanos, and Cappuccinos are just at tasty on my backup coffee bench as they are on my primary bench.

You will see other reviews about this grinder being messy - here's what you need to know about that:1. The main cause of mess is static, the main source of static is dry beans, and the main reason beans get too dry is because they are stale. Freshly roasted beans have more moisture and are thus less prone to static. The Ross Droplet Method (google it) will help, but the reality is that it can only do so much. If you're using grocery-store-bought beans or beans where you can't verify freshness, you will be dealing with some amount of mess no matter what grinder you are using.2. I contacted Baratza, and they sent me (free of charge) a slightly longer replacement fork for my 54mm portafliter, which properly centered the portafilter under the spout. Previously, the portafilter sat too far back, and grinds would overflow towards the handle.3. Using a funnel won't necessarily work because it can make contact with the grinder, applying pressure to the scale and interfering with its function. Don't count on being able to use a funnel with this grinder. The reason I'm not docking a star for those issues is because (a) Baratza provides a free solution for portafilter size, and (b) the static issue is not specific to this grinder, but rather any grinder that grinds directly into a portafilter will experience it if they're using stale coffee. Now, for the good stuff.1. I was coming over from a superautomatic espresso machine to semi-manual, and I wanted a grinder that minimized the number of manual steps I needed to take. Having a grinder that ground directly into the portafilter was one requirement, which obviously many grinders do. However, this was one of the only grinders I could find with a built-in scale. Without that built in scale, you either have to (a) weigh beans beforehand, which restricts your grinder choices to more expensive single-dosing machines with low retention, or (b) grind more than you need, weigh your portafilter and scoop coffee in. With this machine, I put beans in the hopper, put the portafilter under the spout, and push a button.2. The only other machine that can do what this one does is the grinder built into the Breville/Sage Oracle line - but this is a better quality grinder that allows you to choose the espresso machine you really want.3. This grinder is consistent and can grind really, really fine. You do not have to worry about that, though eventually you will have to add a shim (included) through a procedure that looks intimidating but actually is really easy.4. Baratza customer service was quick and responsive to my needs and gave me a solution for my 54mm portafilter at no extra cost to me.5. At this price point, you will be hard-pressed to find a grinder with the same level of features and quality as the 270wi. The value proposition is fantastic.

Great flexability and single dose grinding
18 July 2022

Bottom line: Good quality, stylish, versatile, sustainable, zero retention grinder with amazing customer service. First, the cardinal rule for espresso and 'all things coffee' is to put your money towards a good quality burr grinder first. I have four of these. I have a 270 for me, and then I've gotten three more for each of my three kids as they went off to college as graduation gifts, per the cardinal rule. Here are some thoughts:1. If you want zero retention, single dose grinding across various brew methods, with espresso being one of them, this is the grinder. I have a rancilio Silvia Machine and I also like pour over. So I have the standard burr set and metal 270 adjustment ring so I can dial in espresso. So I have the standard burr set and metal 270 adjustment ring so I can dial in espresso. The fine tuning makes a difference if you have a Gaggia Classic/Rancilio Silvia or better Espresso machine. BUT for my pour over, I bought from their website their s2 course burr set, nozzle, and plastic Sette 30 adjustment ring (less than $50 for everything that set) so I can quick switch out my burr sets for pourover. So in the AM, I grind and pull espresso for the kids drinks with the 270 burr set, and switch out the s2/30 burr set to grind beans for my pourover, and this way I don't get the fines from the espresso in my pourover grind. Zero retention means I don't waste a gram of coffee... which adds up. 2. Refurbished models are great. I've gotten their refurbished models at least twice from Baratza's website WHEN they have them. I think you save $50? They work like a charm. I did have problems on one of them, but Baratza serviced the heck out it which takes me to point 3, the most important.3. Things break. The ability to repair these, have them repaired, get parts direct from Baratza WITH amazing customer service is worth the cost. I've had less expensive grinders (Capresso) which worked great, but once they broke, they were landfill fodder, while Baratza's are made to be serviced or repaired. Sustainability is important to me, and I'm kind of a DIY guy that does my own Rancilio/Baratza repairs, but Baratza does have a mail in option. And even if you are not a DIY person, they do have repair videos, etc, as the electronics and mechanics of a grinder isn't too intense. I will say that to get into the grinder, you need a torx bit set. Most recently I found a used 270 for WAY under market value from a private seller, and when it came, it had some issues that if you don't know how to fix things, might have made the grinder useless. However, I was able to open it up, get replacement parts, and service it so it's as good as 'refurbished.' Fixability is key.4. Finally, their customer service is amazing. I can't stand emailing companies, but Baratza is quite fast with their response time (usually within a day) and they have always advised, and sent out parts as needed in a timely manner. They have aways exceeded expectations!

Great grinder, fun to use.

This Grinder is fun to play with. I purchased it to go with my Breville Oracle. I wanted to see if I could do it better than the machine… after a year of trying, the bottom line is, I can do it as well as the machine… but why bother? The grinder itself is easy to set up and use. The 3 different “one touch” settings let you dial in a single dose, a double dose and another weight you might want to grind frequently. The drawback that I found most affected the output is how “fluffy” the grinds come out. They will easily overflow your portafilter when you try to dose directly into it. I overcame this by using a dosing cup (which was easier to set into the arms than the portafilter anyway). The bottom burr simply twists off and the whole thing can be swept out thoroughly. Overall I was very happy with this grinder, but I have gone back to using the onboard one in the Oracle as it is just easier and more consistent in its tamping than I am.

This was my first major foray into "espresso", so I've tolerated this grinder for a solid year. Def had a little learning curve, buttttt I'm sick of the mess it makes when I grind with the portafilter resting on its holder. It alwayssss spills over! It's like they designed the holder element way too high up and close to the area where the ground coffee comes out, and its too high up to use a dosing funnel when resting on the holder. For a while, I was doing the free-dosing method with a dosing funnel without using the built-in holder, but that was giving me incorrect dosing every time (it'd be programmed for 18g, but in reality was spitting out 12g after I weighed it on my scale). It's also the loudest device in the world when grinding. Precision Perfected
2 June 2023

The Baratza Sette 270Wi is a high-quality home grinder that offers precision and versatility comparable to commercial models. With its unique conical burr design, wide range of grind settings, and integrated Acaia scale for weight-based grinding, it delivers consistent and accurate results for various brew methods. While it's noted for being loud and having a finicky grind-by-weight function and portafilter holder, these minor downsides are offset by its robust performance, speed, and low grind retention. Its user-friendly interface and sturdy build make it an excellent choice for coffee enthusiasts seeking to elevate their at-home brewing experience.

Really loud and finicky

I’m a beginner who got into making espressos with my wife 5 years ago to improve our morning coffee experience. This was our first grinder we got through Chris Coffee that we continue to use today. There are some stand out issues we really don’t like that’s making us look for a new grinder. 1) the grinder is insanely loud - to the point where you have to cover your ears when using it 2) it doesn’t seem that well built. We had to replace the gearbox a few months back and opening it up I found just plastic parts everywhere. After a few months the gearbox appears to be grinding down again based on the noise. 3) The electronic weight system is difficult to use with a portafilter. The scale constantly resets or way under or over measures.Overall Baratza support is good ... MoreI’m a beginner who got into making espressos with my wife 5 years ago to improve our morning coffee experience. Sette 270wi grinder review
27 January 2023

We use this grinder for espresso. It weighs 24.5 g. +/- 0.2 g. consistently for our IMS triple basket using a Breville Barista Express to pull the shot. The grind and consistency are a pretty big step up from the BBE integral grinder. Only issue is the grinds are much more fluffy then with stock grinder so overfilling the portafilter is now a problem. Grinding into a dosing cup and transferring works OK but we also have ordered a couple of funnels which would save the transfer step if they work. Can't speak to the reliability as we have only been using ours for two weeks but the grind quality and weighing feature are pretty nice. It is pretty loud if that is a concern but not much worse then the stock BBE grinder which we are already used to.

do not buy this product - a waste
23 June 2022

this product does not work as described. firstly, the weight-based system is useless since grounds will go all over the place when dosing so the correct amount will not fill the portafilter. Furthermore, if you remove the portafilter midway to tamp down on the grounds so that they don't overflow, then the weight-based dosing will reset and you are back to guessing the correct weight.i originally bought this grinder because I wanted to save time in the routine while still get the correct dosage, but i ended up spending more time in the routine. i will go back to measuring each dose before putting in the grinder OR buying a large kitchen scale (one with x.x gram on Amazon for $35) which I can sit my grind on.furthermore, WLL will not cover return shipping for this ... Morethis product does not work as described. firstly, the weight-based system is useless since grounds will go all over the place when dosing so the correct amount will not fill the portafilter. I would rather pay slightly more to another vendor knowing that they stand behind their products.
