Purchased the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO having owned previous models and hardware from BMD. This unit is almost a dream for the desktop producer but has some features that keep it from being truly a reliable professional option for field operators. One of my very first uses resulted in a disappointing result. I recorded a short test video and although the signal showed it recording, no file was found on the hard drive later. This has a dual point of concern: one that the video did not record to the SSD (Samsung T5) and the other that the device proved to be unreliable as there was no way to playback or check the video until it was done recording. I am very hesitant in using this on critical live work.My previous ATEM Studio HD setup uses the dual-slot Hyperdeck ... I am very hesitant in using this on critical live work.My previous ATEM Studio HD setup uses the dual-slot Hyperdeck Recorder. This unit has proven to be very reliable when capturing video from the ATEM and you can see the file being generated on FTP or on the ATEM control panel as long as the Hyperdeck is connected. Alas, on the Extreme this is not the case that I have been able to see.Another disappointing note about this unit is when I connect the SSD to an M1 Macbook, the files recorded in ISO across the 8 channels result in a MASSIVE file, often with sources that are not available. The computer can't seem to read these files and shows blank on my Apple M1 Macbook. As a suggestion, Blackmagic should consider a dashboard on the Control Software that allows you to turn on and off certain sources to avoid recording unnecessary files and jamming the SSD.Ok, those are the most annoying items on the ATEM.What this ATEM can do in comparison with other ATEMs accross the Blackmagic line is just brilliant.Having a Super Source, multiple DSK's, and up to 4 Downstream Keys that give you unprecedented production power at this price point is not understated.Other features include camera control and adjustments, sound control, at least in volume, a comprehensive routing system on the hardware itself, and several transition effects, found on its little brothers.Having multiple HDMI outs and a Headphone jack demonstrates that BMD has been listening to their user base. This unit is ample and indeed Extreme for most Desktop publishers that want to up their zoom or Skype game. But the hardware offers opportunities far beyond that, making it a perfect future-proofed piece of kit.As a BMPCC 6K owner, this unit has been a time saver when setting up and matching cameras from the Producer chair. If a camera is slightly out of focus, I can push a button on the ATEM and snap it into focus. (Fast Auto Lens is required on the camera). Color matching is also useful when using more than one camera on the same set.The Super-source feature is by far the best excuse to buy this. Can really upgrade your presentations and recordings with this feature alone, found in much more expensive devices.

I thought the Blackmagic ATEM Mini Extreme ISO would be overkill for our use, but we are already anticipating using most of its features! For example, we thought we would never need more than 4 inputs, but now realize that 8 inputs will be just about right as we move forward. We also didn't think we would need the ISO feature, to be able to re-edit a session. But it quickly became essential once a couple of real-time flubs happened, that we needed to edit before archiving the video. We KNEW we wouldn't need to control our cameras remotely-until we discovered how cool (and essential) THAT has become, once we tried using it with a couple BMD 4k Pocket Cameras (itself maybe the best camera of it's kind available right now).I hadn't even thought about the ON-AIR ... Very nice.I can go one about other features, but my advice is to skip the lesser ATEM models and spring for this more expensive one. I believe it's worth it in the long run.

The Atem Mini Extreme ISO is truly a magnificent piece of equipment, with built in switching, keying, advanced layouts, recording amd streaming. It's easy to use out of the box, intuitive, and well thought. I would caution that you should not buy an external drive for recording until you look at the supported drives, as the Atem does not support all drives (I found out the hard way). As far as B&H goes, they make the experience that much better. With free expedited shipping, I received my equipment extremely fast workout further hitting my bank account. This is a very versatile device. Recording, streaming, and even traditional live event video source switching are all possible and fairly easy with this switcher. The Extreme variant adds Super Source and a few more features over the smaller ATEM Mini models.I carry the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO with me to all video operator show calls in my work as a freelance AV tech and it has saved the show in more than one occasion and that's either from a pop-up streaming request or needing a sub switch to control downstage monitors. I highly recommend this switcher to those in my profession as a great item to have in your toolkit for any show.
First point is when you see this beast, the term "mini" is lost on this one. Not only does the have 8 inputs, but a whole rack of additional buttons, this is MASSIVE. Compared with the original Mini, which I upgraded from, it's amazing they are part of the same series. The extreme models boast dual HDMI output, downstream, upstream keyers and so on.. The ISO allows separate recordings from each input, in addition to the final mix. This is SO incredibly useful if your cameras cannot record as well as stream. Even if they can, having all mixes on a single disk is very useful. If you don't need that, then the standard Extreme should do, but with the price difference and if you can push to the ISO model, just do it.The other great feature is Super Source. This is a ... If you don't need that, then the standard Extreme should do, but with the price difference and if you can push to the ISO model, just do it.The other great feature is Super Source. This is a feature borrowed from Blackmagic's more advanced line of production switchers. It's very basic out of the box, and needs some configuration. There are 3rd party add-ons to help not only do this easily, but to even animate the supersouce feeds.Unlike the standard Atem Minis, the Extremes require a lot of learning to discover all features, so dedicate time to doing so. This is such an issue I kept my original Atem Mini as a backup, and also for training purposes. What's amazing about that is its simplicity. It just does what you want it to do. The Extremes do a whole lot more but that's going to take some serious time and head scratching. For me, the clincher was the 8 inputs coupled with ability to record onto tiny disks from all feeds. That in itself makes this item completely worthwhile. My only criticism of the Atem Mini line, is they need mains power. You could run off a battery but you'd need a considerable sized one to drive this unit for hours on end. I looked into V-Mount batteries but even then you'd be looking at 2-3 for a day's filming. It's exciting times and I cannot wait to see what Blackmagic come up with next. With the price drop, it makes this unit a lot more attractive if the recording capability is of value to you.
This product is a major step-up from the earlier models. The four additional camera inputs are just the beginning. The extra USB-C port is a game changer. This allows you to record to an external hard drive while controlling the switcher with your computer, This makes macros and graphics available all the time. Plus the ISO version records all cameras plus the live stream. I wish I had this version from the beginning. If you are in the market for an affordable switcher. This is the right choice.
PROS: This is my 3rd switcher in a year. In September, I upgraded from my beloved V-1HD to the ATEM Mini Pro ISO in order to get the timecode synced individual recordings of each camera, the DaVinci Resolve file with cuts saved, the built in encoder, and the built in webcam option. I miss the T-Bar and knobs from the Roland for adjusting the PiP DVEs, but other than that it was a solid upgrade. Then BMD introduced the Extremes and I couldn't resist. This ATEM Mini Extreme switcher adds and extra HDMI OUT (2) for multi view AND venue projection. This reminds me that the audio handling in the ATEM Software Control is amazing. You can adjust background sounds like computer fans, etc to be virtually silent. This was a sore spot with the now discontinued V-1HD, because that fan was LOUD. That didn't matter as much in ambient-noisy conference settings, but in studio it was a killer and I ended up modifying the switcher to try to eliminate it. (Video of that adventure is on YT.)CONS: I don't see myself buying any BMD Pocket Cinemas (budget reasons) , so that whole row of 8x6 BMD PCC buttons is useless to me. I wish those were configurable to Macros. I'm not taking any stars off for this, because this is decidedly the best switcher under $1500 that money can buy.
I got this atem extreme iso two weeks ago and was happily using it since then. Today I ran into a very strange issue. I was using only two HDMI inputs (1 and 2). Nothing plugged in any of the other 6 inputs.1) Today I noticed that the light button for the 3rd HDMI input was showing strange gradient red. It did not matter which input button I press that this one always stayed partially lighted in red.2) Then suddenly 'all' the lighted buttons (including the tiny buttons) were flickering at random. I was in the middle of a broadcast and I got worried even though the broadcasting was going on.3) Then came the horrible problem - the ISO recording. At the end, the ISO recording could not be stopped at all. It did not matter how hard or how many times I press the stop button and wait but the recording wouldn't stop.! I tried to stop using the console app as well. Finally, I had to literally pull the power plug. When I did, I noticed that the recording was incomplete at the end.. It was the same ssd that I used for so many days and had so much of free space too. It gave about 400 MB/s write speed for me when tested with BlackMagic Speed Test.May be this happened only to me, or may be a firmware issue I don't know, but I want the users to know what I ran into. Luckily it was within my warranty period to return.
I had the ATEM MINI PRO first and was blown away by what it offered then Blackmagic Design took it even further with the extreme ISO. This has almost all the capabilities of the more expensive high end broadcasts switchers. The biggest limitation is the 1080P size limit. For me this is not a big deal and it still looks great. The built in chroma keyer is amazing! you can really get a perfect key from a green screen shot. The only thing I wish it had was a power switch instead of just plugging and unplugging the power supply. You can use this switcher to host zoom, GoTo Meetings, Microsoft Teams, and Ring Central in addition to the social platforms. I love that I can record each camera feed to a Hard drive and also get a full timeline edit of the show once done. I ... If I want to make that high res, each camera can record its native resolution and then you can match that back in the edit to upload for a high res recorded version of the stream.
I upgraded from the Mini Pro ISO with 4 inputs simply so I can access Macro buttons easily. I needed to use macros because we are using a green screen on one camera and it doesn't hold the croma key settings properly without creating a macro (fair enough). The problem I ran into is that with ISO recording, I wanted to bring the captured footage with chroma key into Davinci Resolve. When the resolve project is opened, it doesn't retain they key (in fact, the background comes through but the foreground track is lost). This creates more work to fix and pretty much defeats the purpose of the ISO. I will be working on a work-around but it's not fun and I'm back to square one. Would love for Blackmagic to address the chroma key carrying over to the ISO generated project file. Other than that it's a nice tool if you don't need chroma key to be edited later.
