I bought this toaster today on the recommendation of CR. It replaces an 8 yr old Breville 4 slice that started toasting on one side only just last week. This toasters center heating elements do not work. I will be returning to BBBeyond tomorrow. Sure hope they take it back. Absolutely NOT up to Breville standards. After reading these reviews I must say, this is not an isolated problem. Is there no quality control in todays factories? Does anyone at Breville care? I’m so disappointed bc this is a brand I’ve trusted for many years.

I inherited this toaster when I lost my son in 2021. I was just curious what years you manufactured this specific model, 1742 is etched into the bottom. I don't know when he bought it but was trying to see if I could figure out when he did by your answer. He loved the job this toaster did and so did I. It worked fine last week but today it decided not to let the toast stay down. I cleaned it and tried everything I could think of to make sure the armature stays down but it won't anymore. I hate to lose it, it is a memory of my son and it might be silly to some, but I hold on to each memory I can. If you can let me know I would appreciate it.Surviving Mother of CTT1 US Navy

Initially, this product worked well and I loved all the features and quality. Within the first 3 years of owning it, I found the toasting to be uneven with the interior sides not browning. Additionally, the LED indicator lights do not always light up when plugged into power or lights appear briefly, but then they go off. Many times I need to adjust and hold the wire just to keep the lights on and to toast items. The plug and wire are sometimes very hot to the touch when unplugging the appliance. This all began occurring during 2022.

The negative reviews nearly stopped me from purchasing, and I’m so glad I ignored them. I’m not sure what some of these people were expecting from a toaster, but I’m more than happy with mine. I’ve seen a lot of complaints about the beep alerting you that your toast is done being too loud. It really isn’t, and I appreciate it - it keeps me from forgetting my toast and then having to reheat it so the butter will melt. Even if it WERE loud, the instructions (which many people clearly didn’t read) explicitly detail how to adjust the volume. The instructions also tell you to run a toasting cycle at the highest setting to burn off any residue, dust, etc. Which solves the smell some have complained about. The toaster is pretty good. It toasts well on the middle settings. I like that the toaster elicits a sound when the toast is ready. The "a bit more" does just that. The cons: Controls are on the side so you may have to place it horizontally on your counter; therefore taking up more space. Bagel setting - I like the outside toasted too! It seems most bagel settings don't toast the outside sufficiently for my tastes but that's me. The a bit more setting takes care of that. As to longevity? We'll see in a year!
Our older toaster broke. We did extensive research and found great ratings on this unit. Despite it being more expensive than what my better half wanted to pay, we were able to find one selling locally and picked it up that day. A discount coupon helped on the pricing issue, but overall the real savior was the toaster and a happy return to our toasting bagels weekend breakfast ritual. The toaster does a nice even job toasting the bagels and the features are very easy to use. We have had an equally positive experience toasting bread as well. Only minor drawback for us is the size of the unit which required us to find a little more space for it on our counter and its sideways orientation requirement to get at the controls. But otherwise it does an excellent job toasting.
I had a Breville toaster several years ago and like many other reviews here state, the center heating elements stopped working on the regular toast setting. It was out of warranty, but frustrated me enough that I finally just ordered a new unit. Just like the first, it worked fine for 18 months or so then developed the same problem: only outside heating elements come on during regular toast setting, but center elements come on for bagel setting.Would expect such an expensive toaster to last longer! I’ll be replacing it, but not with another Breville product.

At first my toaster worked fine, but soon, the inside elements weren't toasting as hotly as the outside. They didn't glow, and the toast would come up soft on one side, toasted on the other. Only in "bagel" mode did the inside elements heat as they should. I called customer care, and they sent a replacement toaster. Which, by the way, is an inconvenience, and requires me to box and ship back my toaster so, I imagine, they can recycle or send it to landfill. The second toaster had THE SAME PROBLEM.
